Maybe teenagers have to be taught how to drive better.
Quote from wheel4hummer :Maybe teenagers have to be taught how to drive better.

I believe that's an excellent point. Our government(s).. at least our one... are trying silly schemes, such as introducing average speed cameras everywhere.. introducing silly little black boxes that limit your car to the speed limit.

All this does is take away control from the driver, it doesn't tackle the young drivers (and sorry to stereotype, myself's included in this :shy that think they're invincible. You're young, you just passed your test, you think it's big and clever to drive around everywhere like your hair's on fire.

Was it in Finland they taught new drivers all sorts of (what we'd call) advanced techniques including ice driving, wet/dry braking without ABS and slide control? Perhaps this would improve the statistics however I believe it's an unfortunate case of the youth of a given country.. I believe this is worst in the UK as I've yet to see quite so many chavs in a stolen Nova in the States.

Then again I think people's friends also influence them quite alot. I've been in a situation where a few people were daring other people to go faster, to take more risks. I've also seen several chavs in different swerving in and out of traffic on the motorway doing 90mph.. Would they drive like this if they were on their own? Most likely not.. but with their friends, it's another matter..

On that topic, a recent bugbear of mine has come about.. That is, generally 17-21 year olds who have passed their test and have a car and a girlfriend. You take your girlfriend out places and "out for a drive" but then you drive about like a dick. How would they feel if you crashed and you killed her, or arguably worse, caused her to be paralysed or lose a limb or two? Sure it looks "cool" and "manly" and "big" to drive about like this and show off but to me it's just an accident waiting to happen.. literally..
Quote from sam93 :I am going to get a nicer car at 19/20, hopefully a BMW E30 325 with the M-Tech 2 bodykit in Aplina White - Lovely car If not one of those, I'll get the E36 version.

Im biased. Go for the E36! :hide:

Thats a better idea, but thats why multiple people are telling you to buy a cheap run around, so you have more money to spend on a nicer E30/36 or whatever you wanna buy when your 20. And dont mod it! Its utterly pointless modifying cars with such gutless engines.

You being 20 may feel like a loooong time off, but once your driving and socialising abit more due to being able to go further, those years will fly by.
I wouldn't say young drivers are the worst - there are some irresponsible ones, however at the same time a lot of 40 year olds have only ever passed a much much easier test and seem to have forgotten the basics of indicating.
True, a bit pointless tuning a small engine. Think i'll buy a goodish condition mini leave it standard for 2 years, sell it and get a bemmer, pitty a e36 evo m3 wont be cheap to insure at 20 - they are the same price as a good condition e30 325i lol
I'll post it yet again so you can compare what you COULD be driving:

A 2L pimpwagon with lower insurance and tax to mine...

to a Corsa:

Or after you've finished with it:

:P
Rofl! Them two corsa's are gonna be sam's before/after shots. j.k

p.s, is the insurance for that volvo really cheaper than your proton? Your proton is a 1.6 or something right?
And if anyones wondering - yes that blue car behind the Volvo is mine. And yes it does make my car look so small by comparison

And let me show you what else you COULD be driving:

(and yes, he can't park for shit).

Might take my camera to School tomorrow and take some pics of everyone elses cars so you all see what amazing cars we have :P
To be fair I don't think it's right to laugh or mock other peoples choice of car, in retrospect.

They are obviously happy with it and they can afford to buy/run it so well done to them, IMO.

And Jack seriously stop with the blanking out of number plates, it achieves nothing at all@@
Quote from S14 DRIFT :To be fair I don't think it's right to laugh or mock other peoples choice of car, in retrospect.

You've done it to me enough :P

Theres nothing wrong with a Corsa - but if you compare the Corsa I posted above to my other friends 306 i'd much rather take the 306 - it's not that nice to drive, but it gets better MPG, cheaper insurance and is in much much better condition overall...
Quote from S14 DRIFT :And Jack seriously stop with the blanking out of number plates, it achieves nothing at all@@[/QUOTE]...no.

Takes less than a minute to do, and could save a lot of trouble in the future. I've explained why i've done so before.
I've skipped the last two pages, so forgive me if the idea has been shot down or whatever. The Mini is a great idea though, I got one two days ago. It'll be €1200-ish to insure when I'm 18, and €310 to tax for a year. They are a lovely car, especially for a first car. They're extremely personalisable, without going for Astra-van ricery. There's almost an infinite amount of setups you can make with all of the restoration parts available for inside and out, compared to bolting pieces of plastic onto an Astra.

Plus there's plenty of grunt from the engine as standard (I have the 1275, which ~80% of the ones from the 90's are), and they're easily tunable (Last issue of MiniWorld did a feature on a BMW-produced supercharger kit available for around £1300 for carbed models, for example, which almost quadruples BHP). You also feel you're going twice as fast as you really are when cornering, which is excellent fun. There's no need of doing suspension mods to them either, they have rubber cone suspension, which has about 3mm of travel And when you inevitably do have a crash or tip, body panels are dirt cheap (My nearside A-panel has dabs of rust around the bottom edge, but a new panel is £14 delivered for example).

Why don't you wait until you're 18 before insuring your own car though? My named driver policy at the moment on a 1.0L is €600, compared to about €3500 if I was to insure it on my own. If you did get a Mini, you could let one of your parents insure it as a second car, with you as named driver. A lot of people insure Minis as a "weekend" car, so it wouldn't look dodgy. It would look far less suspicious than if you did the same thing with a modern car anyway...You still have a bike to keep you going until you're 18 if you decided to wait altogether. Think of the amount of money you could save towards petrol, tax and tyres, not to mention and mods you're planning
I can't get my parent (Dad) to insure the car for me, his insurance wont let me on his policy as he has a traders policy.

Just looking on Andrian Flux at insurance. They do loads of discount if your part of certain clubs or have done Pass Plus etc.
Linky to where they give examples of quote for 17 yr olds.
http://www.adrianflux.co.uk/news.php?fct=news&id=61

The old Beetle is the cheapest to insure even though it's a 1.6 but they are bloody expensive to buy lol.

I want a Mini badly lol.

Here here sam! I concur!

What, I thought I would try putting it differently lol.

Going with Adrian Flux might mean I may be able to get a 1.4 106 Quicksilver. They are suppose to be good handling cars, and by looking at the specs, they seem to be pretty quick for what they are.
Obviously, there only a 1.4 so there not gonna scare you, but theres plenty of power to keep you happy for a year or two until you can get something a little faster. Nice cars though.

They are very good, my mate had a Y plate one for about 2 years and on the odd occasion that i drove it it really did go very well, much much quicker than the 206 she has now.

It's a pity really because it was only sold about 3 months back as there was no room for both cars so she let it go for £1500 for a quick sale, which i'm led to believe is very cheap bearing in mind it had a full year MOT and had only done about 65'000 miles.
I couldn't have a 106 unless it was the GTI or Quicksilver. 106s don't look nice without the GTI body kit IMO.

Hers was the quicksilver, it was a very good car.

@ Sam. This is gonna sound silly, but have you considered american imports? I've heard that things like V6 mustangs and things like that are pretty cheap to insure here, due to them being a very odd car for a 17 year old to drive. It just depends whether you would be comfortable driving a LHD. Try doing quotes for very irregular cars. Cars that young drivers would'nt really drive.

Corsa's and fiestas will always be expensive to insure for a young driver because young drivers are always crashing them, pushing the premiums up.

While it's true they're unusual, it's the engine size that'll be the killer. I just did a quick online quote there for a 4.6L 2006 Mustang GT (the oldest, smallest option the site had) and the cheapest option was still over £5000 (just because I think that's the maximum quote). And I'm 29 years old. Only been driving a few months, but I'm in a far better age group for insurance shopping than any 17 year old.
I'd expect LHD to hurt insurance too since you're on the wrong side for watching oncoming traffic.

Get a 96-98 323. I love mine It's only a 1.5 but it does the job nicely and still looks good despite being 13 years old. Insurance group 9 I believe. Cars are cheap, insurance is pretty cheap, running costs are cheap and because they're Japanese they're reliable too. Even the 2L V6 version isn't a nightmare to insure.
Dammit why. :sadbanana
