Quote from SamH :I apologise if I ever gave you the impression that my decisions as a Moderator were topics for debate. They're not. James received an infraction, and that is that.

And I apologise if I gave you the impression I was some kid you could kick around.

I tried to keep it civil, but I believe your last response was totally uncalled for.

You're a moderator of a forum. In the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal. You shouldn't let it go to your head.

Quote from tristancliffe :The odd 'use the damn search button' post is quite different to repeated mocking and fault-finding of one individual.

And if I got the wrong end of the stick about
"Well, actually, with respect, I'd rather you left me to fight my own battles."
then I'm sorry, but it sounded to me like 'I can say what I want, and I don't need moderating thank you very much'. Apologies again if I read it wrong

The quote you selected was in response to:

Quote from SamH :It is my responsibility as a moderator to protect members from that kind of posting. I'm sure you'd expect me to do the same if you were on the receiving end.

So, in context all I meant was that I'm capable of defending myself against harrassment. (And yes, I do appreciate there are others who do need protected by moderators)

Becky - Sorry your thread went OT, but since James' punishment was declared publicly, I felt the ensuing discussion should be public as well.

Finally, Sammyboy, I agree with your stance, and your position. To Serpentine: This is a not an open forum where you can do what you like and run things how you like - it is a private forum present for a specific purpose and hosted, with rules, by certain individuals. Those certain individuals elect a few members to moderate this forum and maintain certain standards, and it is there right to tell you what to do, or how to do it. If you think it's bad here then try RSC and you'll see what it is REALLY like at time. This forum is exceptionally open and gently moderated (which is a good thing), but certain rules about harrassment HAVE to be enforced to make it acceptable.

[OT]I appreciate your input, but you seem to be addressing points I never made. Not once have I suggested I should be able to do whatever I like on this forum. I've been around long enough to know who runs this forum, and how it is run. There are many forms of harrassment that take place almost daily here, but most get overlooked because of who is doing the harrassing. One only has to look at the responses to any poor unfortunate new user that has neglected to use the search facility before posting. A bit of consistency and even-handedness would go a long way.[/OT]

Quote from SamH :In direct response to your question, yes I did read those threads. I'm also not going to even guess at whether the suggestion in James's post was true. That particular aspect is completely irrelevent.

'True' does not necessarily equate to 'fair comment' So it sort of makes the interpretation of James' post relevant.

Quote : In my opinion, James's comment was uncalled for, inflammatory, derogatory, and exactly the kind of post that will no longer be tolerated. It is my responsibility as a moderator to protect members from that kind of posting.

Fair enough, you're the moderator. That's your job. But might it have been prudent to give James a chance to explain his position?

Quote :I'm sure you'd expect me to do the same if you were on the receiving end.

Well, actually, with respect, I'd rather you left me to fight my own battles.

Quote from SamH :It's a red card, basically. James has been sent off for a few days.

The difference is that there is nothing malicious in faster111's posts, but there is far too much malice in some of the responses to his posts. faster111 has, to all intents and purposes, been bullied on this forum for far too long, and it will not continue any more.

Ok, this may be an 'infraction', but I have to ask - did you read the threads where several of us tried (for many, many hours) to help Faster with his graphics problems? In my view he abused us.
I'm not saying he deserves to be bullied - that's totally wrong - but to punish James for something that could fall into the category of 'fair comment' could be construed as a degree of bullying in itself.

So Faster, you admit there was a problem with the old graphics card!

Are you now going to apologise to all those here that tried to help that you rewarded by arguing with or ignoring?

You could have chosen the thread title a bit more carefully.
Some people may have recorded the match and not know the result yet.

But, yes, it was a great result!

Quote from BlueSkunk :what's so stupid about his idea? noone was talking about a driver who does the ultimate pace in all cars either. maybe its stupid because you wouldn't be nominated by your team?

i'm always amazed how often people get slagged off for simply voicing an opinion or asking a question. some attitude, indeed.

Well said.

Quote from Jakg :ahhhhhhh

i have been pushed TO far now

he has just MSN'ed me to say that Stoney (who's word is now gospel) says "the case is overheating" and has now decided its overheating, [...]

I can understand your frustration. A while back on the CRC support forum he was quoting you, and it was your word that was gospel! He seems to latch on to whatever suggestion suits him at a particular moment in time, then gets cheeky when others try to help.

At the end of the day, he's really listened to no-one. I tried to help him as well, but he's the most uncooperative, ungrateful little oik I've ever encountered.

Quote from faster111 :well its not my card and its something els and i fond a new game till lfs gets a new patch

Quote from Jakg :for the last time

it IS your card, a new LFS patch will NOT fix it

Quote from DEVIL 007 :I am ending untill you realize what is really going on.

Please dont come back here next time if you will want to play LFS again and will ask for assitance that your card is broken(screwed by your collegue or who ever is he).

We did all your best here and we saw a lot of patience but you just ingnore this all.I cant be suprised anymore by another of your nonses posts.

Its your PC and your graphic card.

Faster - this is exactly what I, and others, told you repeatedly on the CRC forum (and in the shoutbox).
It's what people have been saying for weeks now, but still you won't help them to help you.
I used to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I'm becoming more and more convinced you're just taking the pi$$.

Quote from BuddhaBing :I agree with ShannonN, the forum is getting out of hand. I am trying to persuade several people to try LFS and am frankly embarassed by the state of the forum and what they must think of the LFS 'community' as a result.

Many of the useless posts come from the same handful of people; several are prolific posters and most seem to be fairly young. I suspect that they're on summer break from school and are bored.

Perhaps if there was a way to limit the number of posts per day to, say, 5, that might serve to reduce the amount of noise on the forums?

I believe the LFS Forum Whores (we all know who they are) will not be happy until they're the only ones left here.

Disabling post counts would be a step in the right direction.

He sure has shown some dedication towrads LFS, with just under demo license. Despite the spelling difficulties, I think he if anyone with demo status should deserve it.

My 2 cents.

Have you ever seen him on the track?

Motivators.... mm.. well, I'm just having a good mood and I'd like to share my happy feelings...

I'd rule out all racing competitions, since they are kinda hard to organize with that amount of entries.

You could just join a few demo servers incognito, and give a license to whoever you deem worthy (as I think a few on here have done before).

Quote from axus :Oh my, you have a knack for missing the point, don't you?

A knack? Have you been keeping notes on me?

Quote :The reason for the 'uber-patch-testing team' (which isn't so much of a designated team as anyone can participate) is so that Scawen can keep his thoughts together when he is working on updating a test patch.

Now who's missing the point?

If you read my post again, you'll maybe see I was talking about a patch-testing team, not a forum! illepall

This was proposed here:
http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=161153#post161153

I actually support the idea of the separate forum.

Quote :If you cannot understand that, you've probably never developed software, correct?

I've developed software successfully for many, many years. Not that it's any of your business.
Why do you feel the need to get personal?

Quote :The point I'm making here is that people should THINK before they shoot off their latest brainfrat for thousands on the internet to read. Its almost like they are hearing non-stop bullshit in their head, suddenly decide its time to post, put down whatever they've just heard in their head and posted something nonsensical. It is impossible for anyone to help them or for anyone to understand what they're on about. Then they play the victim when someone asks them for more info. illepall The odd thread that went in an unexpected direction or something like that doesn't get to me (nor to most people here), but I think I'm right in saying that lack of thought does.

But what am I saying, its OK to not think and waste everyone's time, right?

If you'd care to read my post again, you'll see that I was largely agreeing with you, although with the caveat that we should try to avoid deterring new players.

But don't let that get in the way of a good hissy fit.

Quote from richo :New threads should be encouraged otherwise you end up with one stagnant forum, sure you may have silly threads popping up from time to time, its up to the readers disgression to wether they read the thread or not.

I would rather a "community" alive and kicking with new posts (even if some are crap) than a dead static one going nowhere to be honest.

The other point is whats a crap thread to me may be a totally valid post to someone else, look at the number of "OMG ive been banned threads" most often there a complete waste of time for everyone yet there was enough passion/anger for the poster to be bothered to post it in the first place.

No one is made to read a new thread and no one is made to post in it, people are voting with there feet on the issue when they post in any thread...

I totally agree.

With the recent 'let's have an uber-patch-testing team' and now a 'let's discourage new LFS'ers from posting proposal, this forum is in danger of becoming a tad too precious about itself.

So what if a new player complains about being banned? One post to point them in the direction of the server admin, along with some polite info about what to do if it should happen again, should be enough.

So what if a new player hasn't searched for a previous answer? If you don't want to answer their question, don't post.

Don't like the thread subject-matter? Think it's been said many times before? Don't read the thread!
