Quote from Racer Y :Y'all would be lucky if a predetermined random event sort of happened and mutate us all.

Quote from Racer Y :Still trying to find this article where they discovered that wasps not only know their own kind but surrounding animals as well by ...sight?
I'm thinking Guard wasps.
Here's something that skims it.
http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/12/why-some-wasps-cant-recognize-faces.ars
Apparently the researchers think that because the order of wasps that have this skill also have multiple queens made them evolve with a more complex social order system than say honey bees.
There's all sorts of relatively immediate (±500 years) evolutionary possibilities with these wasps. like advances in communication, tool use?

No:
Quote :The wasps did, however, have trouble learning faces without antennae, and faces that had been digitally rearranged, suggesting that both antennae and facial configuration are important cues.

The way the article is written those wasps can only distinguish two different queens from one another using the facial features that are very visible for that species of wasps (antennae and facial construction). Human facial construction is very different from waps and they also tested pattern recognition and memorization and the wasps did not do well at all:
Quote :Amazingly, they were better at recognizing faces than they were recognizing simple patterns, such as triangles and crosses.

and
Quote :Overall, the two species were equally good at learning to distinguish simple patterns;

Like when nico messed up the T1 in monza we could hear lewis say "for the queen and santander" or when alonso and vettel were battling it out we could hear messages like "oh you lovely german boy your overtaking moves taste like hot nestle cocoa drink" and vettel could reply that "my casio watch says I'm going to get you next time you amazing ferrari laferrari driver". There could be money in it.

Actually the ban is only pit to car. Drivers can still complain and speak freely from the car to the engineer.

I know. But I thought it was a nice joke to have made-up messages coming from the drivers filled with non-relevant sponsor bs.

The problem is not really the ban itself of the messages but the random and unclear nature of the ban. Where is the problem they are trying to fix? How are they going to interpret it? Only thing I see is more problems created. How dumb is it going to be if driver gets penalized for something the pit crew tells him?

Not to mention the obvious unsafety of forcing the drivers to watch some tiny displays on his steering wheel while going at 200mph and not paying attention to the road...

If they want to control the radio messages then why not simply make it that the driver can tell to the team whatever he wants but the team can simply answer yes or no with some standard computer voice message? Then have fom have a room full of hollywood writers making up stuff that is then broadcasted as real messages during the races.

Quote from Scawen :Please, no. All those "witty comments" make the forum so hard to read and are really boring when you have read them over and over. If they must be implemented, please limit them to a single line and hopefully smaller than normal text.

I'd suggest removal of animated avatars as they also make it hard to read. They are simply irritating and distracting.

Just turn off signatures and avatars? Or make them off by default so those who want then can turn them on.

I don't really see any way how animated avatars could make things "hard to read". Signatures can be pretty horrible if you allow pictures though. Whatever happens, no pictures in signatures. The lfs statusbar thingies in signatures were fine because they were small but anything bigger then one line is just.. annoying.

Quote from Hyperactive :Well all the species are direct result of the environment so saying the environment is random from the pov of species is kinda strange thing to say.

theres millions and billions of indipendent influences actors and other factors creating the environment a species and its genes live in
the sum of all that is essentially random fron in internal pov

You are misunderstanding the difference between "random" and "complex".

Quote from Shotglass :
Quote from Hyperactive :There is definite set of foot steps leading to this moment and if it was random there would be no clear chain of events just like there is no chain of events leading to the specific random lottery numbers we get every week.

it is random thats why you end up with the ridiculous argument that evolution is impossible if you calculate the probability of this planet ending up in exactly the state its in right now assuming that this is the only way it could have gone

Coincidences are rare but happen all the time.

Quote from Shotglass :
Quote from Hyperactive :In true central limit theorem situation the number of species would decrease over time when in fact it is the exact opposite that is happening.

no it wouldnt

In probability theory, the central limit theorem (CLT) states that, given certain conditions, the arithmetic mean of a sufficiently large number of iterates of independent random variables, each with a well-defined expected value and well-defined variance, will be approximately normally distributed.[1] That is, suppose that a sample is obtained containing a large number of observations, each observation being randomly generated in a way that does not depend on the values of the other observations, and that the arithmetic average of the observed values is computed. If this procedure is performed many times, the central limit theorem says that the computed values of the average will be distributed according to the normal distribution (commonly known as a "bell curve" ).

So why in evolution we go from simple systems towards more complex system if clt suggests it should go the other way (less peaks, towards the average)? Clt doesn't even work if you look at one species living in one place on earth. Mutations start as rare but become more common over time (if the gene survives). If clt approach was correct then the mutations would not lead anywhere because their effect to the average are meaningless. Instead of one peak the mutations lead to new peaks meaning that your clt should be called multiple limit theorem.

Well apparently false starts are against the rules but if you false start just a little bit it is fine.

As for the magnussen penalty. Some little bit of consistency would be nice. For most of the time the drivers have been allowed to push others off the track without any consequence but sometimes it just happens to be worth penalty. Personally I think it is stupid that the drivers are allowed to do that for the most of the time. If you push someone off the track you either give up the position or get penalized. Shouldn't make it any different if it happens during braking or corner exit.

Either way the fia is only harming the racing. If we allow drivers to push others off the track we see less wheel to wheel racing because being on the outside is essentially going to be an offtrack. If you give random penalties for it then drivers will do it and we get these redonkulous situations where the positions are not decided on the track but after the race you get some random dice roll decision. If pushing other drivers off the road was forbidden we would see more wheel to wheel racing and two wide through corners because the car on the inside can not just ignore you or push you off the road.

Quote from MadCat360 :No, it's not. It's random mutation tempered by natural selection, or in other words, the natural conditions. It it were truly random we would be a mess, genetically and physiologically.

the environment is random as far as the species in it are concerned
central limit theorem basically

[/quote]

Well all the species are direct result of the environment so saying the environment is random from the pov of species is kinda strange thing to say. It would make sense more if you said the environment was random for the genes because eventually that is what the evolution is all about. Survival of genes. To me it makes more sense to say evolution (or abiogenesis) is just one part of the whole process that started with nucleosynthesis and depending from pov is just one part of that whole http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structure_formation which "just adds complexity to the universe". I'd guess there is a scientific term for it but I can't remember it. It is not really random or it is just as random that we got the chemical elements we have in our universe randomly.

I have no idea boris what you are doing on your computer. You seem to be able to create or find the most unusual and crazy problems with every game you (try to) install on your pc. Some of the big pc gaming companies should hire you to just install and play their games and find those bizarre problems only 1% of all people in the world encounter with their games.

If such natural ability to either find those bizarre problems or be able to create them exists you definitely have it. Or some big QA firm could probably just give a room full of computers to you and every monday morning you go there and install some piece of software and then take the rest of the week off while the techies try to figure out what just happened. I'm not even being mean one single bit. You clearly have some supernatural ability when it comes to creating bizarre problems with computer games.

Anyways I finally figured out why I'm not getting any feedback in rf2. Not feeling anything what the car is doing. It is because for some bizarre reason I'm not getting any visual body roll in corners. The cars just don't roll in the corners. I'm not saying I can't roll them over but its like the suspensions are... static. But it's not that, it is just odd... Maybe I have created my own boris situation here...

Anyways2 if someone who plays rf2 calls ac arcade to me it would sound just odd. I just did a 9 lap race in the wet in the roadster thingy in loch drummond and I did not spin even once. I could even go as far as to say I was not able to spin even once. I had many slips and slides and most of the time I did not even need to countersteer properly because the ffb saved me. I don't really know what makes ffb good but in rf2 the ffb "feels" really communicative and helpful and for the most part is really good at telling what the fronts are doing. Even with not feeling what the car is doing (from the visuals on the monitor) spinning out rarely happens and there is definitely no icy spins with the cars I've tried. Even with the 370z nissan I was almost drifting out of corners. Something that has only felt kinda natural in ac with the gt cars.

Obviously the sounds are some of the worst I've heard in a long time (all the sounds are kinda mushy and muffled) and the game looks like a used dog dinner (but runs well) but who cares about graphics when you have rain and what looks/drives like a decent dynamic road surface?

Quote from Scawen :Yes that would be good! Also it would be nice if I could just click "like" or "+1" or something on your post instead of spamming another post.

Like or +1 would be ok but please don't add any negative dislike or -1 options. On every forum that has had that kind of negative voting option it has only resulted to kinda trollish behaviour where people just go and click -1 on every post about a topic they don't like. Or just go around the forum disliking every post from sone single member.

Well I just downloaded and installed rf2 yesterday and I'm getting 130fps driving alone in the civic. I did turn some graphics down. Not feeling anything what the car is doing but there are also lots of stuff I need to turn off. Like when I rev the engine the whole car/view starts to shake. Lmao. Such bizarre.

My specs are i5 4440 and ati 6950.

Some feedback:
- when I log in the forum should go back to the same thread I was originally reading before I logged in and not really give that "where to go next" page.
- text is smaller. Why?
- in the old version it was easy to see at first glance which threads had new replies. Now you basically need to read every line to see which threads have new replies because the text "new" is in same color as the rest of the text. Maybe make the text "new" different color like red to make it stand out more?
- new posts in threads (since your last read of the thread) are not highlighted in any way so you need to remember where you left off last time when you were reading the thread.
- those links on the top of the page (forum/user profiles) look like tabs but are just links. Imho clicking "user profiles" and then "forum" should bring you back into the thread you were originally watching and not to the forum main page.

- as for new features can we get embedded youtube videos?

The sls, 12c and the 458 would make really nice class of cars but sadly the cars are not really balanced at all (I mean, they really aren't balanced as I think it was never kunos' intention to balance them). The 12c is like 2 seconds faster than the 458 which is 2s faster than the sls. Too bad there is no s1 version of the sls. Or some s version of all the supercars so they would be balanced. All of the are very nice to drive even if the sls is clearly the least sober of them around a track.

What do you guys think of the sound of the sls? To me it lacks depth. It is really difficult to tell how much rpm are you pulling at any given moment so you really need a shift light and a tach to get the shifts right. The sls also sounds louder standing still idle than at high rpms...

The idea that women are better at multitasking is as far as I've understood a myth. That being said when I was stydying to become an engineer we had women in our class as well and from my pov they are just as good engineers as the rest of us.

As for women racing drivers menstrual cycles could be problematic though.

Quote from Scrabby :Screamer 4x4, old game but lots of fun! Mainly about trial riding. But very good though

Screamer 4x4 is kinda poor version of spintires tbh. At the time the screamer 4x4 was pretty nice game but it had some fundamental problems. One was that the tires had the typical lateral grip issue where if you tried to drift a rwd car it just spun around. This is very wrong for offroad driving where the tire should dig into the ground and give more grip. Also as a game it focused way too much on drivng the sections as fast as possible. It was more of a car orienteering game than an offroad game. It even had sort of rallycross events with keeps . And it didn't have mud.

Spintires is everything screamer 4x4 should have been. You drive the car against the environment and not against the clock.
