I agree this is an excellent review! I'm surprised there weren't any replies when it was originally posted three years ago.

I wonder if TSW has made any alterations to the shifter to improve its resistance when changing gears since 2010? Any one bought one recently? Is it still too light?

Highly disappointing announcement.

Agreed. Dundrod would have been a much better track than this overrated turd.

Quote from CardsetCrazy :Of course it wasn't surprise that GT6 (and GT5) has amazing graphics.

LOL wut? Have you played GT6? The graphics are ass. They're worse than GT5. Aliasing everywhere, tearing everywhere, and constant frame drops during cockpit view. They're putrid.

Where are the Japanese Drift cars?

And when are we getting a dirft mode setup for the Lotus 49?

Quote from Kristi :I answered your question properly. I don't see the problem. It's a car with relatively low steering lock, so nothing more than a few 4 wheel slides are good for your health...

Ahh I see, thanks

You didn't answer my question....I ask how driftable is the L49. In other words, can you drift it ala GPL?

How drift-able is this version of the Lotus 49? Similar to GPL?

The latest interview with iRacing was just posted between the guys at ISR and Tony Gardner. Lots of great and surprising info was revealed, including great progress on Monza, Bathurst, their recent aquisition of COTA and the very recent hot off the press aquisition of Ferrari

Totally random question but do you guys ever plan on upgrading the graphics in LFS? IE DX11, higher res textures, improved lighting, HDR, etc?

Quote from Postman Pat :Agreed. But I think for a lot of people it's just as much being able to measure yourself against other drivers (stop giggling at the back!). At anytime in iRacing you can see the fastest Q, practice and race paces of the best drivers in a track/car combo currently run and know where you stand. Since sim racers are generally over-competitive head cases, this is important. We are told that a large proportion of 'sim racers' don't even race on-line. Even in iRacing, many people only do 2 races a week in a series because of the championship points system + pressure and need to practice to maintain iRating. In iRacing you've a guaranteed race every hour/2hours in Mx-5 or skip. But there aren't enough on-line sim racers to find that in every car/track you might want even with iRacing's large captive membership.

I'm also thinking there might be an issue for any sim introducing environmental conditions e.g. weather/grip levels; it no longer becomes possible to compare hotlap times meaningfully. So an element of interest/motivation is removed for the off-line drivers. I'd suggest a "hotlap mode" which has a fixed starting environment and number of laps say 10 - so you can still lay down some rubber. But otherwise the same conditions for everyone.

A good AI, and ability for modders to create some sort of competitive system with rules/penalties would be the best we can hope for I suppose. With a driving aids option to bring in the arcade boys (and money) in addition to a hard core sim physics, I think AC could really be a winner. rFactor2 was more hope than expectation for me and ultimately disappointed; it's got too much wrong for me at this stage - like iRacing - to think the creators will ever get it right. But I really think AC could be it...what I've been waiting for. :goodvibes

Yeah you may have a good point there.

Have Kunos given us any detail about what the online portion of AC is going to be like? If they are hoping to compete with iRa$ing they're gonna need to incorporate a serious online structure into the game, complete with collision and off track penalties. Otherwise it's going to kill any hope of having a decent public arrive and drive environment. Part of the reason why iRacing is so successful is because at the end of the day, once you get past the graphics, physics, the interface and the sound, it's ALL about the thrill of on track competition.

I'm aware of how important leagues are to some people, but a growing part of the sim community are voicing their opinions on how they'd much rather have a straight up arrive and drive at any time during the week structure.A lot of people(including myself) don't have the time to dedicate to a once a week schedule at a certain time that a league requires.

I'm hoping Kunos will take online multiplayer serious enough to consider these things. Because if the online is a no holds barred playground with no rules and people can just jump in and wreck other drivers with no consequence whatsoever, then I'm afraid this sim will not see the success we're hoping it sees.

Thoughts?

AC looks really fun. Can't wait to try the drifting mode. The most enjoyable drifting I've experienced in a sim is probably drifting in Grand Prix Legends in a mod called the Formula 2 mod. They're lower powered cars than the default 67s' but they're easier to tame and incredibly fun to drive. Anyone here played it? I hope we see them in AC

Quote from GreyBull [CHA] :I think iRacing has less registered members than LFS, but the online activity, in terms of online players online at the same time, is probably much bigger.

LFS maybe has 2 or 3 really crowded S2 race servers, but the rest is either drift, cruise, stunts, etc. iRacing is exclusively racing.

IMO iR is not "arrive and drive" at all, since unlike LFS, it's hard to catch a random race and drive. You have to stick to one/several series, buy the appropriate content, then wait for a race, etc. You have to train because you can't afford being a fool in races, as iR has an automated system called Safety Rating that can downgrade you to a lower series.

Some hate the system as it requires commitement and it can be a bit stressful at times, but some like it as it ensures pretty clean racing once you reach a certain level and stick to the proper series. At this point you don't really care about Safety Rating anymore, since as long as you don't spin every 2 corners it's not that hard to maintain a good enough SR to keep yourself in the series you want to race.

LFS is more "arrive and drive", you pick a server and you catch a random race, maybe there are some systems like Airio that tracks lap times and "points" but you're free to ignore it at the end of the day. The downside is, the racing isn't always clean, and sometimes it's hard to find a server with the cars or the tracks you like. And, the most crowded server is multiclass, so it can be problematic if you don't like multiclass.

There is also league racing but IMO the standards have gone downhill over the last 2 years or so, maybe the pace is better overall, but the racers aren't as clean as they used to be, sometimes I have the feeling it's harder to pick a good clean fight in midfield these days.

Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.

.

That helped tremendously GreyBull, thanks. I will keep your comments in mind.

Oh and you mentioned drift servers. I like drifting a lot. How active or full are the drift servers here? What kind of cars do you drive in the dirft servers? A youtube link would be cool

I was going to go with the A1 Gearbox but:

1)He doesn't even have it ready on the webpage yet

2)He's in Aussy, I'm in US. Import costs would be a bitch

3)SST is in the US. Convenient for me plus only $15 shipping. Can't beat that.

Only thing I'd like to know is, can you change the shifter knob to another one if you want to?

how would you rate the simCon meter as a whole? Is it as badass as it seems in the picture? Are the leds pretty bright? Have you had any problems with the other sims that do work with it? How does it fit with non-open top wheels?

Quote from Ikaponthus :There seems to be a lot of moaning, dick-measuring, complaining etc. going on on these forums, and not least of all by myself.

So I want to start a thread just to congratulate all involved on the fantastic achievement that is Live for Speed!!

As a (edit: ex-)demo user, I've only played it for a couple of days, but I am already completely blown away by it! It seems the developers share an almost identical vision to my own on what the perfect racing car simulator should be! I'll be buying a licence shortly.

I own a few other racing sims, and apart from Flight Simulator, they're pretty much the only gaming I do at all. Grand Prix Legends set the bench-mark all those years ago, and since then I've seen nothing that really compares until LFS, which seems to be taking things to a whole new level!

I'm so impressed with what I've seen so far, for example, I literally had to take a double take the first time I noticed the tyre-deformation when driving too hard into a corner!

I have no degree in physics, nor have I any real experience racing apart from winning my companies Christmas Go-Kart day event! But I can say without a doubt that, for whatever reason, Live for Speed just feels more like driving a car than any other game I've played. My sneaking suspicion is that that is because it is more like driving a real car than any other game I've played!

So I hope the developers read my thread. Keep up the good work, stay true to the vision of a highly realistic simulator that doesn't try and cater for all markets and you will create a classic!!

Simply amazing that, from what I can tell, it just seems to be a handful of guys working on this and they are completely upstaging the big companies ... simply awesome!

I must admit I've pirated my fair share of software, but when it comes to things like this I'm more than happy to fork over the price, even for an un-finished alpha product! In this case, the devs really deserve to reap the benefits!

And the potential for the game is just incredible and so exciting! If the "+" stuff in the sticky log thread in the "Improvement Suggestions" forum gets implemented then Live for Speed will simply be phenomenal. Things like dynamic weather, dirt on the track, improved damage modelling and the possible edition of a "classic era" class of racing are just so exciting!! (the latter obviously is a personal opinion, but I'd love to compare a 67 GP car in GPL --> LFS!).

Great post! I agree 100%!! I'd go as far as to say LFS is almost as good as OutRun2006: Coast 2 Coast!
