It's, umm, a penalty - where you have to stop, and then go again. The clue is in the name.

(Serious bit: you gotta drive into the pits, stop in a pit bay while it counts down for 10 seconds, then you're free to go again. You get the penalty for speeding in the pits).

Obviously it doesn't apply for this particular instance where the author is present, but in general if the link to the skin itself deliberately hasn't been provided by the author, then I very much doubt it'll be appreciated.

Agreed, which is why I neglected to mention any names. Thanks for the vote of confidence, even though I had an appalling set of races tonight overall. Nonetheless, I'd disagree on the FXR driver just being "very aggressive". Sometimes, when the situation is appropriate, I'll drive aggressively; making threatening moves down the inside of corners, deliberately blocking the whole line if I'm defending through a corner, etc - anything that's firm but fair. But what he was doing was very different - making no effort to adjust braking points according to who he was following (given that FZRs usually have to brake sooner than FXRs) is one thing, but deliberately punting me off (and I know it was deliberate as I jinked slightly to the right before the turn in point for the final hairpin, fearing he was going to come steaming into me yet again, and he followed me exactly) is quite different - and to me is classed as malicious rather than merely aggressive.

This is getting a bit off-topic, but hopefully illustrates the need for some way of differentiating between those who race fairly no matter how new or slow they are, and those who drive maliciously no matter how fast or experienced they are. Even though I freely admit to having no idea how such a thing can be achieved.

PS. Since when could you do a low 1:44 every race at AS3?! We used to be neck and neck, now I can barely keep up with you while I'm only running high 1:44s.

I've had this before - the game just freezing for a split second every few moments. It's undriveable when it happens.

However I find that a reboot of my machine usually cures it, indicating that something, somewhere, is interfering with my connection. Probably some annoying auto-updater that runs without asking me which I should probably track down one day - but it rarely happens really. On the (even rarer) occasion that a reboot of my computer (or router, or modem) doesn't cure it, I find that using a different server turns out to be fine, again suggesting it's an internet connection issue at one end or the other.

Thanks guys.

The DFP has no paddles? Woooo, thanks for mentioning that, I hadn't realised! No way I'm ever going to get one of them, then. I need my paddles, it's all I've ever raced with.

Methinks I'll pop into GAME when I'm in town over the weekend and see if they've got any, and how much they're going for, and how quickly they're selling them.

What's the issue with the momo pedals (I know it's been referred to many times on the forums, but not in any detail that I've seen and I have zero experience/knowledge of logitech wheels)?
MS SW FFB out, ????? in?

My trusty MS Sidewinder FFB wheel appears to be on it's way out. A couple of months ago it was fine, but now the movement is notchy, the bearings aren't smooth and the motor feels rough - rough enough to prevent me precisely controlling the steering when the car is balanced on the edge of adhesion. The downshift paddle has an intermittent issue in that it either doesn't work at all, or takes my FZR from 6th to 2nd gear in one go, much to the delight of whoever's following me. The switch for the upshift paddle occasionally sticks even after I've released the paddle itself, causing the autoclutch to engage and the engine to scream.

Is there anything I can do to service it? I'm kinda used to driving with it and of course they aren't made any more so I can't replace it with another one.

If there's nothing I can do and it's going to die one day sooner rather than later, is the Logitech DFP still the best mass-market wheel currently available? I can't see anything else on the market, and there certainly seems to be a gap in the market between the likes of the Logitech DFP / MS SW FFB, and truly bespoke high-end solutions that cost almost $1000/£600. Something inbetween would be a nice investment, something with more durability and better bearings and higher grade pots and ffb motor that doesn't cost the earth, but there doesn't seem to be any such product around?

Quote from atledreier :IMO, what separates a noob from a newbie is the willingness to learn and accept the opinions and advice

Absolutely. Although PBs or laps/distance completed is the only measurable way we have of measuring anyones ability, n00biness is very much an attitude/social issue.

Imho, n00bs are expendable, and can/should be kicked/banned on sight from servers when they start causing problems. Newbies, on the other hand, should be welcomed and encouraged to learn and join in.

How do you tell the difference? It's certainly not always down to speed. But my time at AS3 in the GTR cars this evening demonstrated it nicely.

In one race, I nudged the back of another car in T1 - enough to unsettle us both and slide, but not enough to cause a spin. Naturally I immediately hit F8, which is binded to "sorry". On the approach to the first hairpin (still first lap) I was at the back of a four car slipstream, and locked my wheels the moment i touched the brakes, with having so little aero downforce. I immediately jinked to the left to try and avoid running into the back of the same car in front, who most likely thought I was attempting a passing maneuver and defended the corner, as well as him having his own cars to avoid in front. Unfortunately, this was the same car I hit in T1, and again I ran into him, this time spinning him out. I apologised again, and after I finished the race which he retired from, we had a quick chat about where I went wrong and I apologised again. I'd say my actions in this race could be interpreted as being somewhat newbieish - I was after all a bit rusty having not raced as much recently and readily admitted fault, especially for the T1 incident. And the other car involved happened to be the quickest guy on the server at that moment.

Shortly after, in another race, I was duelling with an FXR driver. He ran into the back of me three times in the first lap, never apologised, and always ran with the advantage he created of pushing me wide. I made a point of standing my ground on the back straight by leaving him only the room for his car, scraping door paint with him as my FZR powered past, only for him to (quite deliberately) rear-end me much harder at the final hairpin before the chicane. I ended up in the wall with smashed suspension, and started a kick vote, followed by a brief exchange of insults. He retaliated by starting a ban vote on me (which, rather dishearteningly, was supported by the fastest guy I apologised to earlier, despite us both being known to each other on that server). Neither of our votes succeeded.

The moral of this rather long-winded story?

The rude twat in the FXR could run a low 1:45, comfortably in the top third of racers on the server at that time, and often competing for 3rd/4th place. No matter what laptimes he could run, he was acting like a n00b instead of being civil, fair, and taking responsibility for his actions. n00biness has nothing to do with speed or miles driven, sadly.

Quote from CrazyICE :who knows...
as we know, the devs have finished their holiday (scawen is working on patches, vic is always present via mail [support] etc...) and eric seems to be without any work...

Well, Scawen has stated that Eric's work isn't as "obvious" as his and Victor's since it only appears in sudden (incompatible) chunks, rather than incrementally. So I'd assume (albeit perhaps wrongly, although I hope not) that although we're not aware of what he's doing, Eric is busy as well since there's several cars need finalising, GTR interiors need stripping out, and with the LFS devs' track record, quite possibly a little surprise something at some stage. I've got my fingers crossed for an RB4 GTR.

Maybe I'm missing something.

If you park your car stationary on the track on the start/finish straight then you've got to expect to be hit, either by accident or on purpose. After all, common sense dictates that parking your car in the middle of straight when cars, still racing until they cross the line, are bearing down on you at 100mph+ is going to result in a massive collision. And if you wanna mess about and ram each other at high speed after a race with a like minded someone, fair enough, nowt stopping you. I've messed about after races myself with others who are skidding around and nudging and banging into each other until your tyres pop or you're out of fuel.

But often I've finished a race and parked up well out of the way, either round a corner, on the grass or right up against the barrier, while I chat to someone or save a replay file, etc. And sure enough, suddenly my wheel bangs round and the car goes cartwheeling through the air (like we've never seen that happen before omg lololol!!1!one!!1) and I'm left with no choice but to Shift+S.

So is it some kind of pre-pubescant hilarity that I'm missing out on? Does it give kids some kind of huge shuddering orgasm to ram a car that's clearly not joining in? Or is it just a case of people being dicks and unable to defend their actions without recourse to the old get-out-of-jail-free-card of "it's just a bit of fun"? Well, bollocks to your fun. When I want fun at the end of a race, you can spot me amongst the clouds of tyre smoke in the handful of cars pinging around like pinballs. When I'm parked up a 100 yards away with the hazard flashers on, that means "sod off, I'm busy".

Memories of playing this when I was just a kid.

Monkey Island 2
The best point'n'click adventure game ever? Quite possibly. I've only ever been interested in the occasional adventure game, but this was by far the most fun. The humour, the graphics, the atmosphere, the laid-back nature of it knowing you couldn't just die or fail or have to restart - the fact that it was about nothing more than having FUN. Beneath a Steel Sky also gets a special mention for being an adventure game that wasn't set in a land of mystery and magic and goblins, etc. Which I recall seemed to be something of a rarity at the time.

Doom II
First time I played this was the first time I'd seen 3D graphics with textures. Even today I can still picture some of the levels, enemies and weapons.

Half Life 2
I found this to be the most atmospheric game I've played in a long time. Not only is it visually stunning with a decent storyline to explore, but the sheer diversity of the environments with accompanying different sounds and enemies is unequalled.

Grand Prix / Grand Prix 2
These two racing sims had me hooked. I remember reading the review in the magazine, seeing a screenshot and being stunned when I noticed the wingmirrors actually worked! In the days of digital input devices, these games were kings. But GP3 left me strangely lacking, for some reason.

Gran Turismo 1 & 2
The ultimate driving simulator? Well, on consoles, yes. It doesn't cut the mustard for us realism/sim addicts, but for the average gamer it's a superbly detailed, well rounded racing game with enough depth to keep happy those who like tinkering with different upgrades, setups, etc. I've wasted many a day on GT2. And even though we now have LFS, I'll still be very interested/tempted by the next Gran Turismo on the PS3.

Grand Theft Auto III
Despite the best efforts of Rockstar, neither Vice City or even San Andreas can recapture the magic of the first installment of 3D GTAs. Nothing about this game was cutting edge (graphics, sound, design) except the concept, storyline and production. It created a whole genre of 3D driving/shooting games, and is so good you can still play it today and simply not notice it's age. Maybe it's just the New York / Chicago inspired Liberty City lends itself to GTA better than Vice City's Miami or San Andreas' LA/SF/LV, but there's something about the city design that just feels right, and plays superbly. It's also worth checking out this video.

Live For Speed
Obviously.

Haven't raced too much recently, but I also was getting this problem a while back. But it was only one server that it seemed to happen on - I think there was/is a gfs motodrom.de server that was always full of AS3/GTR racers?

Anyway, I'd get the exact same problem - my bar steadily creeping up even though i was getting no lag on the cars. What I was getting lag on was the messages and chat, votes, etc, which would suddenly all burst through at once.

Sometimes it would be the other way round, and I'd be receiving all the messages and stuff, but I'd be sat looking at an empty piece of tarmac with "(lag x.xx)" hovering above.

I noticed that when this was happening, I seemed to be the only person on the server who was affected by it. It also seemed worse when the server was at capacity. Then, it suddenly stopped and the last few times I've driven on that server, it's been fine.

How does LFS netcode work anyway? It seems bizarre that I can "lose connection" even though I'm comfortably watching all the other cars go round with no lag. (Or does it mean I'm receiving data but the server isn't getting what I'm sending?) And is the car positions and in-game messages/votes/etc handled separately, which is why one or the other can fail independently?

Quote from avih :it's just impossible for me to race...

Well every cloud has a silver lining. Sometimes I'd actually feel quick round AS3 in the GTR cars until you show up.

I thought that fixed/forced setups were a good idea until I read some of the replies/thoughts already posted. There's no way round the problem of different input devices that I can see, and it could actually demoralise newbies when they see how much slower they are compared to veterans using exactly the same setup.

What definitely needs to be done is limiting the setup options for the different cars. The road cars should only have the more basic things adjustable, with the fz50 being more adjustable than, say the uf1000. At the other end of the scale we have the GTR and formula cars, which should be kept as they are now with plenty setup options. Imo.

More importantly, we also need some decent default setups. I'd hate to think how many people have given LFS demo a shot, and taken a dislike to it because the default setups are verging on the undriveable on some track/car combinations.

Well the skins you want to use needs to be in the skins folder within the LFS folder.

In the game, the skins present in the skins folder don't automatically appear as selections. On the garage screen you gotta choose "new" on the left hand side to create a new skin/colour set. Then under the colours tab at the bottom you can choose the texture/skin you want to apply to it (this will take you to a screen where you see filenames for every skin for that car), and choose your body and wheel colour to go with it. Body needs to be white in order to make the skin appear as intended.

Can't say I've experienced the same problem, but my Sidewinder FFB does get rather hot and smelly after racing for long periods at a time. It doesn't turn as smoothly as it used to either, there's a distinct notchiness from the motor when it's resisting your turning effort. So it seems there could be a weakness/reliability issue with the motor.

Quote from Delerue :I think it was a mistake to think that every one that plays LFS comes everyday to this forum.

Where did Scawen say that? There's nothing to indicate the game has been abandoned by the devs, indeed even the latest news posting indicates that the devs have been having something of a break from it. Only your failure to comprehend, tolerate, or support the business model leads to you thinking everyone is still expected to check the forums.

Quote from Delethingy :I think it was a mistake to charge an expensive price to something that was not ready and has a lot of old and critical bugs.

How many times do you have to be told? It's not expensive - it's 2/3rds developed and it costs 2/3rds of a full price game. You're made aware you are not buying a finished product when you purchase it. Some of the bugs may be old, but I've yet to notice any critical bugs - there's nothing stopping anyone playing it or having close racing. A critical bug would be a server locking up whenever anyone chooses, say, an FZR.

Quote from Deleverysad :But I understand one thing: since most people love your game, so you thought there was no reason to care about those things. It's sad, just sad.

What's even sadder is someone who complains and then fails to listen to or attempt to understand various explanations of the different business model and approach to game making.

Quote from xaotik :what is a "legal" war anyway?

Well, there is this little document called the UN Charter which defines various situations and circumstances where a nation would be entitled to take military action against another. Examples of "permitted" military action include acting in self-defence/retaliation as a result of there being an aggressor nation, or striking first if, say, 400,000 troops appeared on your border from a hostile nation and posed an immediate threat to your country. I don't, however, believe it extends to pre-emptive destruction and occupation of a country based on made-up/cherry-picked evidence implying that mushroom clouds were about to appear over New York City.

Last time I checked, the US had indeed signed up to the UN Charter.

Quote from tristan :Wars are very good for economies generally though

Well, let's not be too vague here. Although "good" for an economy, to be more specific, wars are even better for the military/defence/industrial/energy corporations which may or may not have bankrolled your election campaign.

But back OT: why the hell haven't the French deployed the army yet? It's been going on a couple of weeks and the police still don't appear in control of the streets, except in Paris where it's died down, hopefully permanently.

Eww, no thanks. Graphics programmes tend to run rather better with only the lightweight CMX viewer running at the same time, rather than the whole of LFS.

But as I explained above, some of us are on fast(ish) connections with rigs that could cope with larger skins, and are willing to put up with the downsides in order to view the skins as they were intended. Which is why it'd be nice as an option, so that those who want quicker downloads, quicker startup, and a smaller footprint on the hard drive (or are simply not arsed about it) could just stick with the 512 skins.
