Quote from jtw62074 :The dev team consists of three of us. They were originally using Ogre for the physics engine, but I talked them into trying mine instead and now they're hooked So yes, I'm the sole physics guy. Zach is a kart racer himself and quite knowledgable in the dynamics end of things after years of setting up and racing his own kart, so together we ought to have it running quite like the real thing. They've arranged for me to take a spin or two in Jim Cassi's 28HP Rotax kart as well so I can know for sure how the real thing really runs. Also, the 2 stroke engine simulation I wrote for Virtual RC Racing 4 will be included as well so you can tinker with the engine a bit too by trying different exhaust pipes, fuel mixtures, etc.. It's very important in real karting so we want to include that. Actually, they originally wrote me with some questions on engines when I proposed they use the engine sim. Then figured, "hey, you want the physics engine too?" Off we went...

They have the interest of a tire manufacturer and at least one kart manufacturer, whose engineers have agreed to give us data. I'm not sure exactly what we can get from that (hopefully tire data at least), but it should improve things. Right now it's a hoot to drive. Better to drive than anything else in the karting market by a long shot according to those who've run it. But that goes without saying

As far as demos are concerned, I honestly have no idea when that will happen. I'm pretty sure we'll have a demo of some sort eventually. Can't imagine not having one. Got to get people hooked somehow

Sounds excellent, can't think of anything to complain about. I wish you luck and don't let yourself get put down by the the people who sooner or later are going to start flaming you everywhere for not working fast enough.

Oh no. The waiting game begins. It's a cruel world.

But seriously this is great news. I'm sure many sim forum people are more than eager to get a taste of your physics engine Todd. I especially like that it will be a new form of motorsport that has not been done before as a sim.

Can you give us any more details? How big is the team? Are you the sole physics coder? What kind of involvement do real Kart engineers have in development? Will there be demos before release?

Quote from sinbad :Assuming he didn't just have trackday cover.

He looks like someone who programmed himself to turn the wheel so far for corner x, and is rather following that procedure more than driving the car, hence why he was totally unprepared for something unusual to happen. Still, got to admire him for releasing the footage (unless someone stole it) because he really, really, does look awful.

Yeah, but I reckon he probably doesn't even know how awful he looks. He probably thinks he's displaying what an evil handling car he was driving. Obviously he didn't have a clue how to recognize oncoming oversteer nor what to do about it. Even the tyres were warning him very loudly, LFS-style, but this still didn't cause any reaction from him.

What I'm saying is that with so little understanding of driving dynamics he probably doesn't understand that his reaction left a lot to be desired either.

My guess would be that latest model Lolas (the ones that look exactly like the FO8) were sequential and the ones before probably H-shift. If you look closely at that youtube vid I think you can see Pizzonia downshifts two gears by pushing the stick forward twice.

And here's a list of the car models used in case anyone feels like doing some web research.

Quote from Bob Smith :My idea:

H shifter, manual clutch:
UF1, XFG, XRG, XRT, FXO, RB4, LX4, LX6, RAC, FZ5.... UF GTR, XF GTR agreement on these two?

Sequential shifter, manual clutch: (but can be shifted clutchlessly IRL)
MRT5, FOX

Sequential shifter, auto clutch:
FXO GTR, XR GTR, FZ50 GTR

Paddle shifter, auto clutch, auto cut & blip:
FO8, BF1

Just one objection. F3000 (FO8) cars never had paddle shifters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sef6_25LGw

That's pretty cool. Google for "holophonic sound" to find out more.

Quote from SladiVadi :I lowered the sound volume of all effects (car engine=10; others=1.6) and that removed the crackling. I tested at Koyoto Ring in an XFR near the walls.

Definately helped. Going even further down to 8/1.3 seems to have removed the crackling completely.

Nice, I just noticed that with the new sound system you can record replays at half speed and use the stretch filter in VirtualDubMod to speed up the sound without going to any external audio programs.

But there still is some crackling going on for me with Realtek AC'97 onboard sound.

And another small suggestion. Maybe there should be a way to disable split times in Shift-F mode while keeping flags enabled as splits can be quite distracting on some tracks.

Quote from RiGun :I'm having trouble with U29, i think it has something to do with the "Controls screen now shows the function assigned to a button" because when I press any button from my wheel at the controller menu LFS shuts down inmediatly without an error message, that does not happen if I am in the axis menu from controller's options.

OS: Windows 98SE
Wheel: Microsoft SideWinder Precision Wheel

Pressing buttons in the controler screen actually made LFS freeze and become completely unresponsive and forced me to hit the reset button. (WinXP, DFP)

Sounds great, thx a lot, especially for putting the sound back in slow motion mode.

That has to be the absolute shortest description of implicit integration I've ever
seen, so I don't know if it is understandable at all.

Thx, I think I got a good idea of what it's about and I don't intend to go any further unless I need it for my own purposes some day. If anything it will sure make me sound smart.

Interesting. I'm trying get a bit of an understanding of Backward Euler:

Quote from orangutan :
explicit Euler: s1 = s0 + ds0
implicit (backwards) Euler: s1 = s0 + ds1

So ds1 is the time derivative of s(t) at t=1 (to be multiplied by the time step I assume). But what is s(t) in a racing sim? I guess it can't really be a function since the external inputs to the simulation are always changing. Come to think of it, if this function were known there wouldn't be much point for any numerical integration would there? Is it an interpolated function calculated from known, past values?

Nice posts orangutan.

Two questions: what do you mean exactly by the term "pre-spin state"? Isn't it more or less the same as oversteer?

And do you know if any modern PC sims are using integration methods other than Euler. My impression has been that todays CPU's haven't made this possible yet or that some methods were just not worth it.

Here are two posts on the subject by the devs of Rigs of Rods and Racing Legends:

Thanks guys. I've worked it out now. I did Samsung --> PC --> Siemens using the export/import functions of the Windows softwares. I wasn't expecting them to be able to read the same data formats but it worked well using CSV text files.

No it hasn't got bluetooth.

I've already saved all the data to PC using a data cable and the Samsung software but I want to send it to another phone directly so that I don't have to enter all the numbers and names by hand.

Love the post response speed here BTW. Been waiting a few days at the Samsung forums.
Need help with Samsung E700 mobile phone

The main display of my phone has failed so need a keypress by keypress guide on how to send my complete phonebook to a new phone via infrared. I've already tried two Samsung forums and they haven't been very helpful. Surely somebody here must own an E700 and can have a quick look at the menu structure for me.

Thanks for any help.

I love how nkp and LFS are both called "Online Racing Simulator" except nkp has a "Professional" in front of it. Somehow this slogan popped up in my mind when I saw the file was on megaupload. LOL.

OK, my last off-topic post here: The discussion reminded me of an article from the Straight Dope that compares swearing in English to swearing in other languages. Interesting read.

For anyone who doesn't know the site: don't go there if you don't have way too much time on your hands.

Quote from DejaVu :Because i already know what kimi said on tv as i was watching it live illepall

Oh yeah, sorry I didn't read the post properly where you explained this. Err wait, you didn't...

And that's the third or forth time you've either used smileys to try and call me an idiot or have directly or indirectly thrown other insults at me. This attidude is all the more unfitting considering your original complaint was that of me using immature language. From your first post on, a mature discussion this was not.

I don't understand your vain attempt at trying to put one up on me with your slanderous post when i only stated something that was true.

I felt you were overreacting, maybe it's something to do with cultural differences? And I was assuming that your son wouldn't be able to read at four years of age, forgetting that kids in the UK learn to read earlier than over here, which made your accusations sound even more curious to me.

And since there is no language warning for the Kimi clip I don't really understand the distinction you make between the clip and the image.

Quote from DejaVu :Yeah, there's nothing wrong with a really young kid running about shouting F*&K, what was i thinking - must be because i came from a bad background............ illepall

Well if he's running around shouting f**k because of that, maybe you shouldn't have read that word to him, or maybe you should make it clear to him that he shouldn't or maybe you shouldn't visit forums with him where the large majority of people are mature enough to deal with this kind of joke.

Quote from mr grady :

BTW, i have a short vid clip of Kimi on the grid....just incase anyone missed it.

Beware, you'll be attacked any moment by DejaVu, who likes to browse the internet with 4-year olds at 1 o' clock in the morning and read out loud to him posts containing foul language.

Quote from DejaVu :cheers for that J.B - had my 4 year old watching me on the pc and he asked what that picture was about.

So? Honestly, I don't get it. I know the F-word isn't exactly polite but I don't see it as something that would somehow be disturbing to young people.

Anyway the post was meant more as a joke than an insult.
