"Love Parade" Germany - Tragic end
As some know, there was a techno party in germany, where it went wrong.

To summarize it shortly, there was about place for 500k people, but there were like 1,4million people, and at a certain place there was a little tunnel, that was entrance, and exit, and it was so crowded, that people somehow got scared, and suddenly everyone paniced, and tried to run for their lives, the thing is, some people fell, because of the heavy pushing and pulling, and they literary got run over by thousands of other people.

This ended in 19 deaths, and 342 injured people.

More info : Here
Most of those that died did because they fell of unguarded stairs trying to reach the festival area (which is an old rail freight terminal). When I look at it I just can't believe anyone thought its a good idea to build the entrance gates (which were closed due to overfilling and caused the panic) behind a tunnel. I've been in similar situations and giving the people a feeling of being trapped is the last thing you want, especially to attendance of a rave festival (which are not just running on alcohol).

The backgrounds are still to be investigated, but so far it seems as if the city of Duisburg (which is very short of cash) ignored a lot of safety precautions in favour of a lower price. The last Love Parade, which was to be set in Bochum, was chanceled for that same reason.
Stupidest ****ing idea i've ever heard.

You'd think the organisers, who have had years of experience would realise a TUNNEL of all ****ing things is the most retarded idea ever.

Bottlenecking kills.

If you are standing there and don't get the bright idea to leave, it's kinda stupid.

All those people standing around / at the back are responsible for this tragedy.

If you see people try to get away, climbing over walls and all sort of things.. Then you have to leave, not watch and film it.

This also; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5Gn_MX14XU ... Only watching, very few people signaling to backup or to get away.

Not only is it stupid to build the gates behind a tunnel, it is EXTREMELY stupid to have only one entrance WHICH IS ALSO THE EXIT for an event of such proportions.. 500 000 ppl.

they couldn't. The entrance to the festival was behind that tunnel. They closed the entrance, told the people to turn around, but thousands were still pushing from the other end of the tunnel. Then people tried to climb up to the festival area itself (seen in your linked vid), some fell, and then all hell broke loose.

As I said I've been in similar situations, when such a mass of people is in motion, there is no stopping or turning around. I'm 2 meters tall, but stand no chance.

edit: @ Lible:

they "planned" for 500.000 ravers, but 1,4 million turned up ... and around 700.000 were still trying to reach the area through that tunnel when the gates were shut. Thats a lot of backpressure to overcome if you understand what I mean.

their all stoned drunk etc.

you try controlling a group like that.

if theirs no way back and people are already pack in like sardines...

isnt panic the only option ?
going by the reports much less than expected turned up drunk or stoned, but lots were highly dehydrated.

seeing this gave me goosebumps, most viewed on Youtube atm:

read through the comments, some are from people who were there. Those at the back didn't knew what was going on at the front. Telephone nets broke down

found a map

the orange part is the ramp itself

It doesn't matter what state they were in, in ANY form of festival / Concert where thousands are showing up, these things are going to happen, and its a well known fact.

Crushing will happen at ANY of these types of events, you'd think the organisers of Love parade would realise that with the amount of experience they already have

Exactly.. People needed to turn around...They didn't...

You need to do this; http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/2539/image1ct.jpg
and yell to other people to move away...

Not grabbing a telephone and start filming like a brainless idiot.
Well, good luck telling a crowd this big to turn around and leave.

You will probably be punched to death instead then.

Its just bad organising. Nothing more...
You can easily pick out the people in this thread that have never been to a festival before lol
Well, go ahead

Yep... i went to Tomorrowland this weekend. Only around 100.000 people, but tickets can only be bought pre-sale. And the festival has a fixed maximum capacity which is sold out months before.

Unlike Love Parade where there are 15 times more people, there are THREE entrances instead of one. You could literally walk in there without touching 1 single person. (100.000 is still a massive crowd..)
Even inside there was plenty of room to move around freely

Ive been to parties where you literally had no place to move, let alone dance, and theres simply NO fun in it.
(Like I LOVE TECHNO in recent years, which is completely indoor lol, makes it even worse)
So it amazes me that people still want to go to these pile-ups.

It is criminally stupid to let a festival go through with a cap of 500k, while the crowd was obviously gonna be many times bigger. Some people should be punished for this.

Looks like this was the last Love Parade ever, which isnt a bad decision.

RIP

Anybody in this thread who has said its the crowds fault.

Its the organisers fault, having a tunnel like that with so many people is obviously going to cause crushing and bottlenecking, you try telling thousands of people to move back when everyones being crushed in all different directions, and its not that easy.

Its the organisers position to minimise the chances of these things happening, and having that tunnel was pretty much asking it to happen
Currently visited exactly 250 party's... Next weekend Nature One for the third time.

Superb festival by the way. @former US military base, Kastellaun Germany

I agree with you although I have never been on such a festival.

The biggest question is why did the actual event area only hold 500000 people? I don't think there has ever been a Loveparade with less than 1 million people so they must have expected it.

I can't die happily until ive gone to that :P

Very nice as well.

Super.

I havent actually been to a proper hardcore/hardstyle rave yet. Will have to try it.
