How about implenting a mirror that has a FOV of about 200°?
benefits: you EASILY see what's left and right of you.
drawbacks: none.
it even isn't unrealistic, just in reality hardly anyone would mount such a thing because turning your head is quite easy. pushing buttons to look left and right, on the other hand, is not - depending on where the buttons are. and most of all it isn't more realistic.

which I think is very close to real mirrors used by race drivers with almost 180 degrees view. Both width of the virtual mirror and FOV should be adjustable to get best distance experience... and fps influence maybe?
