Damage that lasts...
What about car-damage that lasts longer?
huuuuh??

Ok, throw all your anti-nfs-stereotypes over board first, then read on - because it's nothing like nfs, a bit of CMR at most.

Imagine, online you only have twenty cars (i.e. one for every model) to wreck. if it's damaged, it stays damage until you repair it, which costs - darn, I have to say it - credits. You earn these credits only by waiting (or maybe a tiny bit more by finishing a race), definitely not by cruising on cruise-servers. hehehe.

so the nice results:
- respectful driving-style pays of, driving like a blind idiot doesn't.
- if you GET wrecked, you possibly have enough credits if you generally drive decently.

- as a wrecker you will have no cars left after two days and will have to wait, wait and wait for the credits to repair one (maybe one day for a totalled car... don't know).

=> getting wrecked is less probable

downsides:
- getting wrecked - though less and less probable with time - is painful in the beginning... the pain in the wallet is the worst.
- it has a bit of a role-play flavor (but hey, there's no damage/repair in NFS at all :razz

oh, I almost forgot: for most people I have to write that this suggestion can be altered/improved/amended. so don't say BBS just because you'd rather have LFS-$ instead of "credits".
#2 - Nikn
When damage is more carefully implemented, this could shine. In my opinion it would be sweet if you had to pay for tyres too. In most amateur racing this is the biggest cost. Role playing aspects make any game more fun and addictive.

...As a side note, having NFS ricey stuff to put on your car like premade decals, body kits, rims, wingS, neons, etc would be kind of FUN. Nothing that affects performance, just stuff to express your personality. This way we can spot for sure the n00bs before they even finish a lap >:]

Credits to fix etc is a big no from me.

I would prefer that if you retire from a race due to car damage, if you can't reach the pits to fix, then you miss the next race.

That would add some element of fear to crashes in LFS. IRL you wory about your safety and that tempers how you drive
Firstly, I thought that this is another thread related to cruise servers and blah blah blah but fortunately I kept reading and in fact, I like the general idea with the credits thing. Well, it could get some polish, but the overall concept is quite celver, to be honest. If you race, you don't crash that often, so you have credits to get repaired if you accidently crash (or get crashed).
This way, racers will be racing and wreckers will self-eliminate. Quite a clever thingy this is
Maybe the only thing that I would change is the "credits", because, as the original poster mentioned, it has a certain RPG feel into it. Maybe something more technical would be more appropriate. Or lets just be simple: "You have 4 repairs left today"
Quote from breadfan :"You have 4 repairs left today"

why not "you have 4 gold left" - this would remind me of old amiga RPGs.
Quote from Nikn :In my opinion it would be sweet if you had to pay for tyres too.

They would have to make the tyre wear wwwaayyy less than it is now.
how about this... in offline play, it would kind of be like a "danger room" from x men, where you can shit your car however you like and you would be able to repair it.

the damage would only be in real races... where you would have "saved stats"... but the devs would have to add some kind of encryption on the stats so that people don't cheat...

and i think "repairs" would be a type of currency, like a clutch costs 1 repair, 1 shock costs 3 repairs... ect...

and @ Bandit, hate to break it to you, but NFS:PS does have this system, your damages stick with you... that's why you see ziptie'd up FD3S's in the trailers...
Even better: leave LFS like it is and enjoy the simulation!
if the devs do this correctly, this would be the ultimate sim, since it would be exactly like in real life!
I hate this idea

Looking at the join dates for many in the thread I assume you don't realise that LFS has credits to unlock cars in S1 days. It was removed as was a bit crap, easy to cheat and on the whole did not fit right for LFS.

I had assumed that the new driving tests would be used to limit which cars could be driven. I.e, you can't drive the car until you pass the test but I get the feel Scawen is waiting for the final AI tweaks to make them more aware before that is turned on.

Needing the tests to drive cars will stop some wreckers in the faster cars as they will need to learn to drive. You will find real resistance to any form of credit system here though. LFS is a sim, not an RPG.

The best system really is just something simple, wrecked car a wait before you can race again.

In the end though, if you do find a moron on your server just BAN them. Does not help demo users as ban is not ban, but that is the limitation of demo.
I like the idea of my swiss friend :P It would be nice to have to pay for cars and tyres and for repairing damage. As you want LFS to be more realistic

This feature, would be nice to keep noobs away and to see them from far away. I know that this feature will make it hard for cruisers cause there is a lot of crashing but as i crusie most of the time it will amke it more fun to me!

I can`t imagine how pissed off I would be if I were wrecked in T1 4 times in a row, and wouldn`t be able to repair the car before the next day.
Sounds great. And for the slower racers who can't afford to keep their car repaired, we could convert the meeting room over to a mini-casino, playing double or nothing, thus bringing the world of hardcore online gambling to LFS. Free pints of petrol served at the bar 24/7. I nominate myself mob boss.
Do I smell irony?

+1 for Bob's sarcasm

Please, if we are going to have money so we can repair our cars, then what about spending money for food? And what if you have virtual girlfriend/wife in LFS (It gives more reaction bonus if you have slept with her recently), then you would have to spend money for movies, candies and flowers. Oh, and don't forget about salaries for your pit crew! If you forget that, your game is totally over, because you can't even shift+P after that.

Needless to put </sarcasm>, because everyone knew that already.
... dreaming of my virtual gf.... only point i want to let away is that the virtual GF speaks... cause ya know how driving is with your gf on your site....

blablablabla

I seriously laughed about that one.

This kind of things could be done by insim maybe, but in LFS generally it wouldn`t work

can I copy this statement an paste it to every improvement suggestion?

@bob: what's the comment about the slower racers? they're not disadvantaged.

@woz: I like the next-race-ban idea. but where would you put the threshold? how much damage is wrecked?

... I should've known that the word "credits" triggers the "LFS is a sim"-reflex. sorry, forgot that real life racing has nothing to do with money.

but hey, who actually programmed these no-no-no-bots? I mean it becomes more and more obvious that they only react on certain words and not really on content... worse than MS help assistant. Lame programming, really.

wah, new year's resolutions are a dog's breakfast.
OK, lets looks at things from the serious realism point of view then. Repairs cost money; agreed. Do you ever see a race starting with damaged cars? No. Therefore do we need to worry about money/credits/gold in LFS? No.

As for earning of the money, slower racers wouldn't get disadvantaged if the system worked as you state in the first post, but frankly earning money just by hanging around is hardly realistic either. In racing, your sponsors will give you more money if you finish in a higher position, so to take this seriously, it must work the same way in your proposal.

It would be nice to see tyres being re-used between races, but that should be an enforceable option, rather than involving finances. LFS may well be a simulation but it is also a game, and adding money will not help the gameplay side of things.

The purpose of the idea is to make racers awared of damage and be more carefull of T1 tho

I'm not quite sure if I like it or not
Quote from Nikn :In my opinion it would be sweet if you had to pay for tyres too.

uh huh, I destroy over 10 sets for every movie I make, and that's around 2 hrs of driving... and now think of how many drifters would buy S3 if they knew that you have to wait some time to get a set of tires to drift 5-10 laps
Quote from scoobyrbac :They would have to make the tyre wear wwwaayyy less than it is now.

An hour race on a set of tires isn't good enough? You consider an hour of hard racing wearing too fast?
I was going to quote him and ask why it needs to be reduced. Seems about right to me (but I haven't tried doing 50,000 miles on one set of road normals driving purely at road speeds/accelerations).

Quick! Implement this feature! :drevil:
