try disabling tcp mode on the config file for vista/win7, i'm running win win7x64 no problems

TCPmode = false

great tool btw, it feels more reliable now, i remember last time i used long time ago kept crashing on me, now its rock solid for some reason... maybe i just was more of a newbie back then.

btw, is it possible to choose what files to output?, i'm really interested only on keeping the lap by lap file, also don't care about the qualy.

Quote from Gimpster :I can't believe that so many of you are still bitching and crying about this game and it's slow progress. It's a god dam small development team, they have created an amazing product that rivals any other software of its time for functionality (Circa 2008) and it still has an active community.

It was bound to happen that the rate of development would slow down to point where we no longer see the advancement for ages at a time and other products would start to catch and surpass it, but if you just want fun pickup races with fairly realistic physics then you still have that. If you want something more then go get it and quit polluting this forum and community by moving on.

LFS is still the best product on the market for what it is. If that is not what you want, then shove the (fill in color metaphor of your choice here) off.

My question is :

if the development has surpassed their abilities in order to keep up with the current speed of development for computer software... why they haven't incorporated more people into the dev team

the devs selfishness on their own secret concept that they don't want out for who knows what reason, is keeping thousands of users from getting what they want, and generating a generally unhappy feeling among everyone.

get more people to work on the project.

Also someone mentioned something about semantics of businesses and stuff... it doesn't really apply here.

why would the devs be interested in pleasing customers that won't pay a penny for their hard work? do you think newcomers to the game say : "hmmm the devs on this game are very engaged on the community... i think i'll buy this just because of that"

most new customers (people who give the devs money) don't even know the name of the devs when they buy the game

i think a simple solution would be :new content will cost MONEY...

money would be : a better motivation to work, or simply a way to afford having more people on the team..

and i know i'm a demo... this user is just a lesser nobody than my registered ones.

if anyone out there is capable of writing an app in order to have a gui to get that done, i can provide as much support as i can, i'm pretty sure an app like this would promote the game as a simulation platform and i don't think i'm the only one looking for something like this.
Centralized network control for lfs clients

Is there a software/tool/addon to control various machines running lfs..?. while running the game, change player name, join the race, and set ready to go, all from a gui or command line on a network client?

is it possible? the idea is to control several machines that don't have keyboards or mouse to provide a ready to go machine for guests.

we've been using synergy to span the mouse across the network computers, but it's just too time consuming, and as the number of machines grow, it becomes useless...

i know there's a few simulation businesses using lfs, does anyone know what kind of software do they use?.

Simbin has a software for racerooms, wich basically does what i want, but i want to race with lfs.

multichannel audio

you see, in a reall car, the sound doesn't come from the front.... as it would in most computer and even in the most advanced and expensive simulators...., it comes from all around you, the engine humms in front, you can feel the exhaust pipe under your seat... and the noise comes from the back... multichannel audio for some other games haven't solved this... simulating the rear exhaust noise by muffling the sound like you would hear in a real car doesn't work either.... real multichannel should send loads of noise to the rear channel (wich should be placed facing backwards), simulating the real situation of a racing or street car. You might want to switch your big front speakers to the rear now

REAL engine sound (the engine doesn't sound that much), and turbo for the front speakers.

exhaust pipe and engine whine for the center channel (so we can place it under our seats)

exhaust for the rear (now here is where the real loud sound should be), i personally would place the speakers facing backwards, like a real exhaust...

seeing that some aspects of the engine sound can be modified and isolated, i think that the next step could be this.

Try this... i've done this and it's fantastic... if you have a big stereo, place it in the back of your seat... facing backwards... then, with another pair of speakers place it behind your screen... covered with a bedcover... then try DaveWS sounds for a GTR car... now that's how you'll feel real race car noise.. added if you have a big subwoofer.. try sitting on it.

it sounds great... although i'm still used to the CSR sounds with the FOX, using engine volume 5 it was ok.. using 60% master volume and 50% wave volume with the soundcard, a lot more agressive. a lot better than the original ones...

as i was testing the sounds and playing around with the new engine editor, i came up with an idea that could rise the simulation level to another step.

i have a closed cockpit, it's a capsule with a 2.1 B&W setup, a car seat, steering wheel and lcd screen, and while driving im my car i realised, the engine sound doesn't come from the front, as in my speaker setup inside the cockpit... where the front speakers are placed at eye level, 80cm from your head, the sound comes from all around you, you can hear the engine whine in the front and below, then you can feel the exhaust pipe below you, and finally, the louder sound comes from the rear (unless you have problems with yer car )

i think the feeling the sound is half the experience of a racing car... if you don't think so, try running a track with a real car muffled, and then try it again with the same car with open exhaust... even if it might be almost the same, you'll feel that the car is alive in someway.

i placed some sheets to cover the speakers and raised the volume a bit and it helped... hearing the car was more natural like in the interior of a real car... i'll try placing the front spekers in the rear side of the screen, and then i thought...

it would be great to have 2 or 3 different channels for the sound in LFS... the engine sound channel, exhaust pipe and rear exhaust...

how?... almost everyone now has access to 5.1 channel audio..
engine sound and turbo for the front channel, exhaust pipe for the center channel(wich you'll place under your seat), and rear exhaust for the rear channel (wich you'll place facing backwards, like a real car), i really don't know how scawen makes the sound engine, but seeing that you can mute some of the aspects of the sound... maybe he can do something to redirect those sounds to different channels in a multichannel setup...

i think it would be nice..

BTW... great sounds... specially for spectator mode, the FOX sounds for the spectator were really depressive.

that's the cockpit... the rear panel slides and you are completely and officialy disconnected from the real world... the helmet is a project in development... i don't really like to have realtime lap info and position and stuff real drivers don't have... with that helmet, equipped with headphones and mic, you can request status to a team mate outside the cockpit, ask for pit assistance (changing the settings for the pitstop), ask who the hell is up front you, and all those things. also it has the TrackIR clip in the forehead, but i think that TrackIR needs some development with LFS.

i have some machines with a 2.1 b&w setup and SB Xfi, i'll try the new soundpack then i'll post some comments... i'm only worried about clipping, cause there is no preamp, the preamp stage is being controlled by the soundcard mixer, it goes directly to the amp then back to the speakers. i'll post as soon as i get some results.

BTW: how does this soundpack compares to the CSR by yamakawa, stepping aside all the clipping and scratches that are caused by integrated soundcards (with SB's even with the live value there are no clicks with CSR, and with onbard audio it's unbeareable)

Quote from Hankstar :So DarwinAce, what you've said in your third paragraph is basically this: "Drifting is a good racing technique, the proof being that I did it once by accident and prevented someone from passing me." I can't say that's very convincing Even with default setups I doubt very much that someone getting sideways would beat someone taking smooth lines through each turn. You can't kick the back out and block someone at every corner - sooner or later you'll need to think about your lines and try and be smoother in and out of turns. If a guy's a smoother driver than you, he'll pass you somewhere. If he backs off a bit and brakes a little earlier than normal (but not as hard), takes a slower line than you into a turn while you scrub speed off by drifting in hot, he'll be set up for a better exit and be right on your rear to catch your slipstream down the straight, or pull up next to you coming into the next corner.

i was passed by the outside after making the mistake of getting to close to the inner side in the corner, i didn't accidentaly drifted... it was my friend who was racing with me that drifted onto the middle of the corner avoiding and passing me... there are only a few things to do when someone screws up in the middle of a corner and manages to block the line while in a corner followed by a chicane where there is no space to overtake before the mistaken driver gets up on his feet again... a skilled driver could take the advantage of letting the car skid to the outside while mantaining the nose of the car oriented to the track without having to countersteer... that way he can avoid the car in front and ovetake him, a driver without this skill can crash with the car in front or hit the brakes and slowdown along with the other driver...

i really dislike formula D and stuff, i find that really stupid added to burnouts and everything related to mindless usage of cars... but the real drift can be a very good addition for a skilled driver... noone is flawless

Rfactor its a good game, maybe not as good as lfs on the physics side but it's really good...

GTR2 is awesome, in a proper computer, with everything cranked at maximum and a fine sound system, it blows off your mind...

but LFS is for the real thing and flexibility

i'm the owner of a simcenter and yes y do have 4 licenses of lfs. it's just that i don't login with the registered usernames since that they are not me... they are the names of the computers using it.

that happened racing with a friend of mine who was in the cockpit by my side, i know i'm not the best driver around, but 1:09 regular in blackwood with the fz50 gtr i'ts not easy for most people.

what i'm talking about is that drifting is a good racing technique and very useful if used properly, i did made a mistake by taking the race line too close to the inside, so i turned a lot slower than usual, but managed to block the race line... making the regular driver behind me to step on the brake to avoid a colision... a well trained driver who can drift with control and speed avoiding countersteering can take a different line in the middle of the corner and overtake at a decent speed the driver blocking the race line.

note also that we race only with the default settings... i'm sure that tuning the settings in the right path to acoomodate your race style, you'll get better laptimes than someone who races drifting in some corners. But when you really exhaust the possibilities with the default settings, you eventually start trying different racing techniques, and drifting serves as a technique that allows you to slowdown while in the entry of the corner, and not before as grip driving requests. That's specially useful for underpowered cars, where avoiding losing speed wastefuly (ex: braking) means faster laptimes.

drifting is a good racing technique, the problem is the mindless wannabe racers who think that drifting is all about skidding, using hard tyres in order to take the corners in a neverending slow crabwalk.

Car damage in one of the key things that LFS lacks... i recognize the complexity of the damage system already working in LFS, but it doesn't do the job right. i personaly get very angry when someone hits me from behind accidentaly with the FOX, and i enter a spin, losing time and risking the race, losing positions, while the offender just gets a visual deformed front wing. i mean, guys, we've all seen what happens when an F1 rubs another car's wheel, i'm not saying that the fox should be made of carbon fiber and that when they crash thousands of particles should scatter around the track (that would be nice too), but at least the front blade should be either destroyed (losing all front grip due to aero) or disadvantageously deformed (rubbing the floor causing severe turning dificulties and stuff...)

i think you all guys know what i mean.

night races are indeed wanted... real time clock also for my le mans style races

i'm partial towards drifting... i really dislike is when they start drifting just for show, drifting was born based on taking sharp corners maximizing the tyres grip and sometimes without falling out of the cliff.

it's real.. there are some nuts that think that drifting means how long can you stay sideways and how much smoke can you make... but sometimes, drifting can help you overtake a fast, not so experienced driver.. i had the experience myself, in blackwood i was overtaken in the corner after the long straight, by a friend who has a lot of drift practice with the FZ50 GTR, i'm lapping around 1:09 with default setup, and he overtook me by the outside drifting, a LOT faster that i did, in the moment i made a little mistake... and it was proven to me, there are some corners that you can take with the FZ50 faster enough to make you cut 2 senconds with the same setup in blackwood... of course, the tyres will not last, but sometimes it helps when used properly getting that extra boost in the exit of the corner that will help you overtake the car in front of you... and yes, i'm talking about 15 to 30 laps races, not 3 or 6 arcade like races.
