Quote from sinbad :This is how console games are if you play with a controller. Nothing new or unusual.

I don't believe toca 2, enthusia, or gt3 had this 'smoothified' steering going on. Its just the latest 'fad' to make more racing games accessible to sim newbies.

Just got done playing the demo for an hour or so.

You just have to go into 'all games' on market place (not all demos) and it will be there. I couldn't find it at first either.

Tire sounds are great as are braking physics, graphics, but power on oversteer is damn near impossible unless you flick the car (yes, first thing I did was turn off all assists). Even in the porsche super car you can gun it in 3rd gear, turn full lock and you will only get a minor amount of oversteer compared to what you should see from such a powerful rwd car. To me the funnest part of any racing game is avoiding that power oversteer and it seems to barely exists in the demo. Maybe this is due to the low max-lock tire angle, is that adjustable in the final game? I would say, "maybe this is a necessity for making sims controllable on a gamepad" but I have seen other games (like toca 2; the last 'sim-like' game I regularly played for consoles as well as the fantastic console sim 'enthusia') make power oversteer perfectly manageable. Everything else has a great feel to it though. Just my opinion, don't go flaming now forza fan-boys.

The vid now has about 20,000 views in about 24 hours and is now re-featured in the top 3 videos.

From a business/financial standpoint, to ignore or de-value the impact of such free advertising is ridiculous. Obviously few to no one that has no appreciation for or derives any pleasure from the excellent simulation LFS provides and purely just wants to be an ass is going to make it past the demo to purchase the full game. To limit the exposure of a product just because you are afraid some of the people you market to will not automatically appreciate and respect your product is self defeating.

This is a pretty damn heavily trafficked web site I visit most everyday (liveleak.com). This video was featured which means its right smack dab on the front page. It was posted 10 hours ago and already has 2,500 views if that gives any kind of idea of the traffic level of the website. Pretty easy and substantial free advertising if you LFS players can keep the comment table well stocked with Live for speed support and info etc.

Yah, ive always had a strong ass fan blowing directly on my laptop along with my laptop sitting on top of some 20 dollar pampered chef cookie cooler thing when i played lfs.... So yah, like I said, i've tried pretty much everything. By the way, that did in fact work in improving my fps by 15-20 everytime. Hopefully the devs will re-enable the ol' octagon wheels and shoebox car graphics so my comp can handle it again, but for now ive diverted my interest elsewhere. Playing close combat cross of iron at the moment. I dont have the money to blow on a new pc.

The last update which raised the minimum level of lod (number of polygons used) has forced me to give up live for speed unfortunately. Before the update I could keep a consistent 60fps alone on track, and about 30fps, 20 at the least, when many cars are nearby. Now I run at about 30-40fps by myself and 10 or 15 when cars are nearby. Obviously you are just a wreck waiting to happen at those speeds so I cant play anymore online, which is the only way I played.
I had been using every possible method/setting to speed up FPS as well. Im on a 2003 presario 2100.

Im on a laptop which I am constantly struggling to keep my fps above 20 fps on.
What is the best way to get the most for your money when buying a pc? Is it best to 'build' one yourself? Can anyone do that or do you have to know alot about computers to fit it all together?
I've been dreading blowing 1,000 bucks on a pc for years and years (because im cheap) but I might force myself to do it soon if I can find out some concrete information on the cheapest way to go about it. I also dont know about what kind of 'parts' to get. I don't need top of the line at all (I dont care about graphics, just need smooth gameplay) but I also dont want to buy something that I will have to spend 200 dollars on in 6 months in order to play the newest games at all. So I need to know what 'parts' have the best long term value. Anyone have any good info on this? I've been asking around occasionally on this for like a year now in various places but I tend to just get half assed responses which get me nowhere.

Turn off all possible programs with cntrl+alt+dlte menu, even most system ones which you are able to without having the comp crash or lose your internet connection. I figured out the ones i could close through trial and error, but you can close a ton. Also right click on lfs under cntrl+alt+dlte menu and set its priority to high.

You described spiking in your original post when you said the accelerator would jump up to half way randomly very quickly.

Spike-
  1. A sharp rise followed by a sharp decline in a graph or in the tracing of a scientific instrument.
  2. A sharp momentary increase in voltage or electric current.
Unless your wheel is still under warranty they wont do anything. Even if they used to replace wheels out of warranty, they dont anymore. I've tried, many times.

My paddle shifters stopped working eventually, but ive just switched to the stick. Hopefully that wont go too or ill be screwed. The biggest problem is the spiking of the accelerator which i have gotten many many times before as well. It makes games like LFS allmost impossible to play due to the precision required. To fix this what I have usually done is tape down the pots in there so they dont wobble around at all, especially the accel one of course. However, inevitably a couple weeks will go by and it will begin spiking again because the tape isnt holding it 100% still which it needs to be doing. What I wound up doing was folding up a piece of tape to just the right size and pinching that tape in between the accel pot and the "cover" of the pedal housing, and then screwed it on so it was pinching the pot in there pretty good, not allowing it to wobble at all. I used to have to take it apart literally every week to redo the tape but ive been playing for about 3 months now with absolutely perfect accel input, no spiking whatsoever. You could try that at your own risk if you want.
I cant help you with your other stuff though.

Turn up wheel turn compensation as high as needed to help with this. It makes the steering less sensitive towards the center, but quicker once you turn farther left or right. The loss of sensitivity in the center will help lessen the oscillating you get on straights.

Put the max lock degree of your wheel as the degree of turning within the game. Simple as that.
Sorry if this has allready been mentioned, read through quickly.

Oh, and for a first track I would try AS club with the fox. It essentially has only 3 turns so you'll get lots of repetition on a few corners. Ive been playing for a long time and playing a couple weeks on that track sharpened my habits amazingly due to the fact that you can try different things out on the same few corners very quickly and fix your mistakes.

If you can't switch on HVS (at bottom of the graphics options screen) then it's really too old now. The thing is that HVS is several years old now and you should be able to get a basic DirectX graphics card (a few years old model) for a few pounds from somewhere - if there's one thing you can do, that's it! And any one you can get will immediately give you high frame rates at high LOD levels.

There is also loads of laptops without HVS. I posted an improvement suggestion in case you haven't enabled the Intel/AMD optimized software mode.

Thanks for the replies Scawen and Bullit. I am able to turn on hardware vertex shading or whatever its called in the game; as in its not greyed out or anything. Does turning the vertex shading on increase FPS?
Also, Bullit, I would love to try out the suggestion you posted but I have no idea where im supposed to paste that 'code'.
By the way I know nothing about computers but to try and give you as much info as possible: im on a presario 2100 (laptop), Radeon IGP 320m, 448mb of RAM, mobile AMD athlon XP2400+.

Ya, I realize I havnt given it a full resuscitory attempt yet. I have become somewhat of a 'master' at maximazing performance from my system however and I am a bit worried as the performance hit seems pretty obvious. From only a couple sessions (and i know this is inconclusive) I thought I noticed that the cars were being rendered with more polygons from farther away. Before, quite literally, cars were made up of like 6 polygons until they were about 10 yards or so away. Now it seems that cars are near fully rendered much further away. Ive turned my lod all the way down.
Heres a run down of all the things I do to my computer to get lfs running at 30-45 fps so I dont get any of the following advice: all minimum textures, all shadows off, buffering off, simple everything, im running lfs in "high priority" mode, all other possible syst. and other programs are closed that can possibly be closed without the comp crashing, im running in 800x600 16bit mode (cant read text at any lower res), I use the 'crap cleaner' program everytime im done with an internet session, I defrag etc. quite often, i have all kinds of anti virus/spyware/adware programs which I run often to weed out crap, so I just thought id list those so i dont get any of that advice to try and speed things up.

My FPS has now dropped to often unplayable levels now with this latest patch and everything is set at lowest possible settings allready. Im afraid I may be bumped off this game entirely due to system performance, and dont tell me to just get a new system. I've got a wee bit more important things to spend on at the moment and for awhile. :'(

Quote from TypeRCivic ::wow: Do yah think so? GTR-2 is much better in may aspects but lets not get on that subject as it's been broughten up before and all hell breaks loose. Go back to your first sentence. Your correct about that but you never hear of the game until it's about to be released, Like FORZA MOTOR SPORTS 2 is a very good example but there again it's comparing a multi-million dollar corporation who have developed the game vs. Live For Speed's developer's and what staff they do have. Have the DEVES got anything to look fordward to? You tell me. Does anyone know what's going to be in the game later to come? Probally not. I'd like to know myself.

No offense meant to you man, but this post has no substance that leads to further discussion, not to mention it violates the original poster's request. You want it to come out faster, I really dont think your in danger of dieing before you see the finished product like you suggested, and theres simply nothing you can do personally to speed up the dev process so you (and all the rest of us) just need to accept it for what it is. You can make it as bad or as good a situation as you want it in your mind but it is what it is.

There are many games that have been in development limbo for years and years and years. The only difference is you dont get to try them out before they are released as a finished product. So, like you suggested, here is the solution: stop playing LFS until it is finalized. Then judge it then and see if it stacks up to the competition. Maybe it wont, maybe it will blow them away. Who knows? At the moment it is better than the competition in the areas I value so thats probably why people play it.

If the car were that rigid that it didnt have a dent in it and the concrete barrier was shattered then you would quite possibly be reading about the death of Eddie Griffin during a promotion for his film. Cars are designed to crumple so that your body doesnt have to absorb all of the impact of the crash. Many, many race drivers were killed back in the days when they thought the best way to protect a driver in a crash was to make the car as rigid as possible for that very reason. I would guess even at 30 miles an hour a crash like that could be fatal if neither the car nor the barrier gave an inch. That would be like pulling a helluva lot of g's which would be basically the same as having an unbelievable amount of weight on your chest from the seatbelt. I know im not sounding too technical here.
