LFS is dead. Nothing has happened in a very long time and what was a great simulator with a great community has turned into a frustrated community and a dead simulator.

If Scawen & co have any sense they have quietly moved on to pastures new and left you lot to the sinking ship.

Move on - or don't - whatever. No one cares anymore, this is an ex-parrot.

Quote from Mustafur :I would highly Suggest making a topic on Trackforum(the Biggest American Open wheel fan community on the net), I did one recently but i couldn't explain much because i haven't even played the Xbox version.

Thanks Mustafur, that's another great idea I didn't think of! (lucky I don't work in PR )
I'll get in there and try and make a thread

Quote from Mustangman759 :will there be a beta? I would need to try it before I bought it. Also I would love to see the ability to possibly buy the ability to create tracks if you guys have a track maker. It would help you out a bunch if you allow "modding" if you understand what I mean.
Dedicated servers like lfs? or more like xbox styled join and play?

There will definitely be a Beta. Getting Greenlit is just the start.

Once that happens we will have access to the Steam SDK and be able to integrate all of their matchmaking, leaderboard, friend and statistics features. That will need testing - along with the 33 player multiplayer. We expect Beta will last a few months in itself which will give everyone involved lots of opportunity to help shape the final version of the sim.

Initially we are looking at peer to peer (Xbox style), but once we see the SDK we'll be able to make a call on dedicated servers (it all depends on what Steam allows within the SDK).

Hey guys,

So we are now 36% of the way there (according to Steam).

Early next week we'll be updating the games page with new images and video in an attempt to push our votes higher =)
We're also going to start a discussion page on Steam for ideas, wishlists and comments as we're thinking of also starting a Kickstarter campaign (when it goes live in the UK at the end of this month - no more having to have a US bank account). We'd like to add online championships and a livery editor, amoung a few other things...

...and we're keen to find out what other people would like to see in our 'historic racer'.

Quote from Gougoodthing :Thanks for the info.

Just one thing that I want to ask.
If we touch wheels with another car, will we get airborn? This has been a feature that ALMOST NONE of the open wheel games ever made have. It would be a very nice feature, and will add to the realism.

So, I heard this was Brain In A Jar that made this game? Aren't you guys currently working the Wii version of Nascar The Game: Inside Line? Care to share some screenies?

Touching wheels can make you airborn (depending on the contact).

Yeah - we are Brain in a Jar. We're just finishing the Wii version of NASCAR The Game: Inside Line for Eutechnyx. I can't share any pics right now (don't have any back from approval yet), but as soon as we do I'll put some up

Thanks Guys, we appreciate all the help we can get!

The pricing hasn't been decided yet, we're taking a one step at a time approach. So the first step is to get it accepted!

The next step will be to integrate all the Steam SDK elements (Matchmaking, achievements, friends invites, leaderboards etc etc) and beta test the living daylights out of it.

While doing that we'll be working on the rendering more (based on feedback) to get it looking as good as possible.
Adjusting the base set-ups of the cars to get the handling right (it's very easy to get 'used' to something when your running a car over and over and over).
Making the multiplayer lobby and races rock solid.
Lots - lots to do after we get a 'greenlight'... that part is just the start.

Funding-wise we are covered. Essentially we are funding it ourselves. Everyone here is dedicating a lot of thier extra time to it.

Back on the final price... we'll be canvasing everyone that get's involved in the beta. We're going to be open to all ideas, from a fixed price to free-to-play (with in-game purchases). We want to do our best to get it right.

The game goes from 1961 to 1971 (which was a pretty exciting time).
If it goes well the possibility is there of doing more years, but IMS want to see how this goes first, which is understandable.

It's been updated

Hey Guys...

I have worked on this game and it's been updated - a lot - from the Xbox version.

Basically IMS came to Brain in a Jar and offered us the license (the original US publisher had gone).

So we took the game on and have 'rebooted' it.

Much improved car physics with proper force feedback wheel support.
Improved car dashboard views
Improved menu system
Added car tuning
and added 33 player multiplayer

Once we get a 'greenlight' so we can get the Steam SDK and get it integrated we're going to want to do a LOT of private Beta testing.
So if anyone is interested in helping us make it as great as we can just let me know. =D

At the moment I don't think any votes are 'showing up' on the progress. At one time we went to 1% then back to 0% and we've seen it with other games as well. I don't think Steam know what the 'go' criteria is going to be yet.

OK - Never one to judge something without trying for myself I shelled out a $20 one month subscription and gave it a go. Here's my penneth worth:-

Graphics - Set to full. They are nothing special, in fact the tracks look dead and flat, textures are bland, poly count is low. Car models are average and again have a low polycount. GUI and menus (in-game) are plain and nothing more than functional.

Sound - The cars sound great, good engine, gearbox, road noise etc. Better than LFS, on a par with GTR series.

Control - The force feedback is very good, very strong and lots of subtle feedback in there as well.

Physics - Nothing special . . it had that 'ever so slightly wrong' feel that NASCAR always had.

Online - Well, it took me about an hour of searching to find a practice session that had 4 other racers in it. The set-up seems to be that practice sessions, qualification sessions and races take place at predefined times every day (no jumping in for a quick race with buddies here). It's a good idea but in reality it got to be very annoying very quickly. The thought that I could only race when THEY say I can really bugged me (remember it's a $20 per month subscription).

and that leads me to the single most annoying and downright infuriating thing about iracing.com . . . .

You get 2 cars and 7 tracks when you subscribe. You have to PAY EXTRA for the other cars and tracks they have listed. Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but I consider a monthly subscription model should INCLUDE ALL of the content on offer. Maybe you can earn virtual iracing.com dollars to spend by taking part in the races - I don't know, there is no information on the site that talks about that, and in a night and a day of logging in I didn't actually find any active races on the basic content I have.

Other stuff - You can only customise you car / helmet / suit skins within a very limited skin and colour chooser on the website. There are issues with some logitech sterring wheels for which the fix is to turn down the update frequency of the wheel (for a 'serious' sim as iracing claims to be this is not excusable) <- thankfully I didn't suffer this problem, but it's common enough to have it's own section in the faq. The field of view is just WRONG . . I don't know how to explain this properly but changes to FOV are 2D!

The bottom line is that despite all the hype and expensive subscription system iracing is nothing special. Unless you have $$$ burning holes in your pocket I would sugeest not to bother.

I was searching for something completely different and stumbled on this thread.

There are groups of people convinced that climate change in the world today has nothing to do with us (the human species) and there is nothing we can do about it so why bother doing anything (turning off my tap while brushing my teeth isn't going to make any difference). There are groups of people who are convinced current climate change is mostly our fault and we should do something about it (if we all turn off the tap while brushing our teeth we can save enough water and energy to reduce our impact on the world).
Here is the truth:-

We don't know the true impact of our industrialised energy and resource intensive modern way of life on the globe. There is no definitive answer, that's why there is so much argument on the subject.
But
Uniquely in the world we are capable of perceiving the changes and projecting the possible outcomes and hypothesising the causes. We (the human species) are also uniquely capable of calculating solutions (OR POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS).
now - here's the thing...
Because we don't really know if it's our fault or not WE HAVE TO ACT AS THOUGH IT IS because if we don't and it is our fault we are dooming future generations. If it's not our fault and nothing we do will make a difference it is still better to have tried than to sit in apathy and expect GOD (or PETER PAN for that matter - either will be as much use) to save us.

your car has stalled on a muddy hill and it starts to slide down towards a cliff edge- do you just sit there and do nothing because it might be that it's all to do with the mud and there's nothing you can do? or do you try the brakes anyway - just in case using the brakes actually stop you before you fall over the edge?

Hello all. Things have changed a lot around here
So - I can't remember how long ago it was that I stopped racing LFS. I think it was just after S2. Lot's of reasons . . . racers I knew weren't around, work, family and well . . I was just kinda bored

Anyway - I got an email about the latest patch and instead of just dropping it in my LFS mail folder and ignoring it (as I had been doing for a long time) I thought I'd update my game and have a spin.

A few laps on the oval to get back into the feel of it and then on to my old haunt of South City and a try of Aston.

so

I'm back - wow - I mean it really hooked me again! I had some great races and was pretty pleased that even after so long away I wasn't lolling around at the back of the pack. Fourteen cars on SO1 and there were races where everyone made it around the first bend - lol . . . that never used to happen

So there you go - I'm back - watch out as I intend to get quick again . heheh . . . . now where was my paint brush? I think I need to make me a new skin

In general I think most situations can be covered by 'show a little respect for your fellow racers'. Instead of just going all out to get the guy in front no matter what, think about how you expect the racers around you to treat you.

On the servers where I've had lots of really great races (unfortunately mainly in S1 - it seems mutual 'respect' is a little thin in S2 these days), most of the racers 'knew' each other in the sense that a lot of us came into contact regularly on the same servers and so could predict and trust each other. There was close racing, good fun and very few of the dumb moves that go on recently.
I think mainly it's down to S2 gaining a lot of new racers, and needing to settle down a bit - find it's rythm. I hardly race at all these days because of just not being able to get a decent race.

I used to like the cockpit view, but I've now moved over to a 'bonnet' view for most of the cars. I just started thinking "Here I am, there's my arms, there's the wheel . . and there's another set of arms, and another wheel, and why do I spend my time with 60% of my 'vision' filled with dashboard and A-pillar?"

So I tried out the bonnet view and now I really do prefer it.
Chase view though - I can't even drive in chase view.
(Some would say I can't drive anyway, but hey . . .) :snail:

Edit: Well, well - my first post on the new forum.
