Last week they were showing how they constructed the Buj Al Arab and it was amazing so see. Every structure and the engineering behind it is just breathtaking. Humans have achieved some amazing things in engineering in all fields.

If I remember correctly it actually has the equivalent of an extension cord, hooked up directly to some power plant nearby.

no, a regular power-plant, the 3-phasic current is distributed via flex-cable.
Very much like the power extensions you use, just this is for out-door use, has a larger cross-section, and is rated for higher voltages.
