Well, here it is. A sportscar with a diesel engine. Still a concept, but i really have a feeling that Audi is going to make this car into production. What do you guys think?

Yeah Audi can sell anything.

Seeing as its an Audi nobody will care if its diesel because it will still be fast.

They'll make another heap of money
There's nothing that unusual about a diesel based performance car, these days.

Having driven a mere 2.5 v6 Audi A6 diesel and driven or owned a variety of other diesels down to peugeot and vauxhall diesels, I've gotta say that the stigma attached to them are somewhat unfair these days. Granted "off the line" they're typically a bit iffy (is that really relevant on the road though?) but, in my opinion, they're just as good, or better, than the other fuel orientated vehicles in many situations.

I await the slaughter.

if your 500hp car sounds and shifts like a lorry whats the point of having one?

Heard the R8 at Laguna Seca, and it sounded fine. A beefy grumble to it actually. Maybe not as loud and ear screeching as a Ferrari or Maserati, but it isn't as quiet as you might think.

And actually, even the R10 TDI that was racing that night wasn't even that loud, if not equal or less in volume to that of the R8 roadcar.

Beautiful car, loved seeing it up close. I am liking the V12 concept there, hot stuff.
I really hope Audi has done everything they can to make this thing sound as good as it looks (amazing)
For a high power sportscar a diesel engine is not something that I'd really like to see under the bonnet. A power curve that falls quite rapidly at both ends certainly don't match with the concept that a sportscar engine is a high revving one - not something that creates tons of torque in the middle but dies after you expect the good part to start. Not that I'm any engine specialist, just something that came to my mind as I read the diesel and R8 in same sentence

Wait.. the current R8 is diesel? I thought it was standard gas.

The R10 is by far the quietest of all the cars on track on race day, though.

yes but that was the petrol one wasnt it?

exactly so a similar diesel engine on a (audi) road sportscar which unlike the r10 will have a silencer attached will be completely inaudible
and lets be honest whats the fun in driving a sports car if you cant rev it past 7k while setting off car alarms left and right
That power to Torque is abit amazing innit?.

around 400hp to 1100 nm? thats like a tank engine in a Mini cooper?!(with some slight mods to it tho)
Sweet, I love the way diesels drive, all that lazy torque

Coming from Beverly Hills, this car approaches the cool-factor of a whole garage full of anything else money can buy. Probably going to hear a lot of "wtf did I end up spending twice as much for?" from coworkers and onlookers.

The fact that some people hate diesels is going to make it even more desireable to those who love them.
Maybe i should post this in the torque thread but why does it reach peak torque quickly then just stay flat for a few thousand rpm?

Likely limited for the sake of the transmission...
