If you crash, don't move
Alot of people don't know this and I think this is the best way to deal with this situation:

You had an accident and your car is still on the track with other cars approaching the accident site. Most people will try to be good and move their car out of the way. But if the approaching car decides to avoid in you in the same direction we have another accident. So if your car is not at the edge of the track do not move! It is impossible to predict which way you will try to avoid.
Well, the best way is probably less realistic, but I hit "Shift+S" after evaluating my own damage. If I can't go on I get to the pits as fast as I can! But if pitting is against server rules (which I've been in a couple like that), or I'm not heavily damaged, then I get my car facing the right direction. This way I don't take up half the track with my broad side, so that they have less chance of smacking into me. But these days I tend to not crash because I'm good like that.

By the Way, watch this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ9I6IsNWs0
Most often we find ourselves going to fast to see whats happening further up the track, thats why its not the best to sit around...
I rarely shift+s after a crash. Maybe if I'm laps behind the leader, and spinning on my own when the leaders are closing on me.. In most cases I step on the brakes, which is the safest way. Surprisingly often, unlike you said, the situation can be read in fraction of a second, and considered avoiding can be performed.
Totally agree, don't move if there is cars coming behind.
After watching this, to be honest, no matter what you do, you can get caught up in a crash. Be it they are moving or not.
I never shift+s, I think it's completely unrealistic. I do try to not cause any more accidents after I crash, but sometimes it just happens.
I did have one of these crashes though, two guys crashed and were back on the track... And they just stood still right in the middle of the racing line, with two cars! The only thing I could do is try to squeeze through them, it kinda worked, minor damage, but the guy behind me was less lucky, he decided to avoid them completely and lost control doing it.

BTW, that youtube clip... When I used the first link I got it, the second time it made me log in because it was flagged 18+
Ill always stop where i am and look left and right to make sure im not going to hit anything when pulling out, but if im knackered then i just go back to the pits unless im close enough to crawl back myself.
I say you do what you do if you wreck in real life--if you can move the car, do so as soon as it is safely possible to do so. (Very rarely in LFS is a car damaged to the point where it can't move--cars in LFS drive away regularly from crashes that would crush the driver to death)

I would know. I have lots of experience crashing in LFS. (I'm not a "banger", I'm just a really s****y driver!)
if you're in or just ahead of a pack of cars and you have an accident it might be best to stay still to avoid and mis-interpretations of where you're going but if you're close to the edge of the track and especially if you're on-line, move quickly away from the most likely place for cars to be. If you use you're look buttons and make sure there's nobody within striking distance you'll be safe to move and most people will assume you're gonna move to the closest side anyway.

I've been taken out of races by both courses of action and I think you've just got to use you're judgment and wits. try to get the car off-line as soon as safely possible, and return to the pits with the utmost care (hazard lights are a good idea) and maybee even a few written warnings to the other drivers (if you've got time)

yeah its so lame !!
i never press Shift + s except when i get to my pit box. Shame on U ppl!! u are pressing that shift + s so easily without getting into a pit box - that spoils my whole gameplay.

So lets start "No! for unrealistic behaviour on track"

1 voting for race start is unrealistic
2 voting for qualification is unrealistic
3 pressing just a one button for a car recovery is unrealistic, they should make some combo or smth so this would make it a bit closer to reality.
4 no ingame chat - unrealistic
If after a crash my car would ruin other's races I pit,( as quick as lag allows)

Failing that and if other drivers are close behind yes stop where you are and close you eyes

.

NO it can make for much better racing, LFS is not real, cant be as we would all be dead, If i,m wrecked on track at t1 keeping it real after a crash, I bet it would ruin your game play

John
I'd rather racers didn't shift-s after crashing. I don't unless the server insists. I love the challenge of trying to avoid stuff on the road (probably too much need for speed :P). I'm not a very fast racer but I really enjoy these split second reaction tests.

But I agree with the first post, if you've crashed and your stranded in the middle of the road(with racers right behind you) just stay there, the other drivers will figure out the best path around you.
if you crash and there is no one immediatly near you... get off th road. today someone ran out of fuel or crashed on aston national on the last turn and just sat in the middle of chicane... I slowed down and drove around himm but the car behind that i was battling was not so lucky.

it happens in real racing, so afaic (c for concerned!) it should happen in LFS, i want to be on somoens bumper, and them move to the left so i can see the wrecked XRR in the middle of the road, but then again, i want it really wrecked

Do I sense sarcasme?

Yes: 1,2 and 4 are necessary because it is:
-1. Impossible to get a new race, or would you only want one race every sunday or something? It would be nice if a race just restarted after X minutes after the previous race ended.
-2. See above, kinda.
-4. Even though we are just on the internet, a bit of socialising is always good. IRL people talk to each other too.

All these things, imho don't extract the game from realism.

No: Please read "yes:"

I support number 3

It´s also a question of the track you choose. Small, fast tracks (like the OVAAAAAL) are not the right track to wait after crash. You´ll better push shift+s if you are standing in the apex for example. Every 30 sec. cars will pass. NO TIME to get your direction fixed. Entering pits after hiting the wall with 350 km/h+ is even .... UNREALISTIC.

But I agree with point 4. Ingame chat suckz, so better use ventrilo voicechat.
The clip in the second post is the incoming driver's fault... There's smoke at the turn exit, and there's dust on the other side of the track. Also, the yellow car was not stationary. It came skidding back onto the track from the right. Had he lifted as he should've, he would've avoided the wreck.

I don't like Shift-S to avoid wrecks. It's unrealistic, and takes away from the overall experience. On the other hand the amount of inconsiderate idiots on the track that believe they are God and can drive around crashes without lifting and steering is overwhelming. I have no problem with them taking themselves out of the race, but in doing so they always seem to ram my rear end because I DO lift for a wreck.

I also find this behaviour is most common in people that are really close to wr times. Not all, some can actually race fair and smart.
I'd just like to say now--if I wreck and you hit me, I'm sorry for losing control. If you wreck and I hit you, I'm sorry I couldn't avoid.

But what if there's a wreck in front of me, I lift to avoid it, and you ram into me full throttle from behind?

You'll be surprised how many guys will go screaming at me because I lifted

I don't even know there is a crash in the first place. So I can't really lift before I get there... When I notice an accident, I'm most of the time just a few meters away, or already passed it

100% Agree. I love the times there is an "incident" in front of me, since it's also fun to watch the physics do their thing. Imagine when the damage model is pimped up..... But it's always a let down to see a car in front start leaving rubber, then comes the smoke as the car yaws, and then all of a sudden ... "POOF"... as it vanishes into thin air.... That's no fun
slow motion video. this happened to me today.

i see much slower car car in front of me on inside line... i move to outside

he movies to outside... so i move to inside...
then he moves to inside and i'm screwed.
only 3 mb 12 seconds at 1/4 speed

The guy in front shouldn't have braked, and should have stayed on his line where he was in the first place.
Quote from Gabkicks :I slowed down and drove around himm but the car behind that i was battling was not so lucky.

That just says to me you're a better driver (more aware and quicker thinking) than the guy behind. He should've slowed down and drove around him as well. Having said that, it's ridiculous sitting on the track lap after lap. My aversion to shift-s-ing is only right after an incident. Once everyone has gone by, either get back into the race or shift-s.

Maybe we should have Hazard Perception Tests in LFS . If I'm following two cars fighting for position I always have in the back of my head 'one of them is bound to cock it up'. I'm rarely in an accident that I didn't see coming (unless of course I'm hit from behind or swerved into).

As for the early braking and lift off scenarios, I say it's your responsibility to not hit stuff in front of you. There's nothing the guy in front can do to avoid you hitting him, and saying he should keep the gas on or not brake isn't a valid arguement. Perhaps he's lifting off to maintain control of the car, so you're giving him the option of 'lose control and spin out' or 'maintain control and get hit by me (and then lose control)'

I get caught off guard by early brakers and such aswell, but the result is usually just a small tap(brake hard and come to a standstill if I have to) followed by a 'sorry' from me.

I was in first position... Should have mentioned that, right?
