Quote from NotAnIllusion :tbh, my personal opinion is that f1 is far too technical for drivers to duke it out and see who's the best. I keep hearing how cars suddenly go from crap to good in the same stint etc., it's just not a field where everything's level enough to pit a driver against another and say which one's King. Not to mention that it's soo difficult to get close to other cars and follow them (even if they can, overheating etc.. /yawn). It'd be fun to see the pros in faster GP2 cars and see how they do

Yes, but F1 is not about seeing who is the best driver; it's about who has the best race team and the driver is one (very important) part of that.

If you want to watch a driving competition then watch spec racing.

Driver skill still plays a huge part in F1, however; in fact, I think most people underestimate the role of the driver in F1, seemingly because they become confused by the many other variables involved in determining a winner each race.

But that's the whole appeal of F1 for a lot of people.

Sorry, I've just got this image in my head of a confused old man, mistaking the noises from his television for the voices of his relatives.

Thanks for the link, CELTIC100.

Might as well wade into the Lewis debate...

I think he has shown that he is a fantastic driver. I rate Alonso as the best all-around driver on the grid, and Lewis has beaten him fair and square twice now in only 4 races.

Remember some of the amazing speed Alonso pulled out of the Minardi back in the day? And of course his comprehensive thrashing of Fisichella, a man who many rated the second best driver in F1 after Schumacher and a man who had NEVER been beaten by his teammate.

Lewis is getting ridiculous amounts of hype from the tabloid and mainstream media in the UK who have been whipped into a frenzy by not only his pace but also his youth, looks, "ethnicity" and his polite and humble manner.

But it is unfair to hold this against him. He has done an outstanding job so far this reason, regardless of the hype and regardless of whether you feel that the circumstances surrounding his current success have been favourable.

I look forward to the four-way battle for the title continuing throughout the season!

Quote from tshorter :Any plans to resurrect the STCC 3b "silver and up" server (LX4, LX6, RAC)on CTRA? I was actually starting to like those things...

Thanks to UKCT for taking these over, and to Becky for setting it all up in the first place.

I second that - it's good to have some variety on the STCC/CTRA servers.

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :Since getting my G25, my times have improved drastically. With a little bit of practice I can generally run about 1s/min off the WR. I run whatever rotation the car has in LFS, and I find that running 720 where applicable actually has helped me a LOT to be precise through corners. It's much easier to make small but precise corrections with larger wheel rotation IMO. If I want to set the faster times I actually use the shifter and drive like a maniac because you can shift VERY quickly using the shifter, and you don't have to flatshift so it sure sounds/feels better. If I visit a combo that I haven't driven in awhile, I invariably smash my PB within a few laps using the G25. I don't always have the energy (read: lack of laziness) to use the H shifter but I can pretty much always get identical times using it. The time lost by manually flailing about is offset by shifting superfast like a nut.

Don't forget most people have driven the XRT/BLGP combo A LOT, so silly fast times are common.

What controller setup were you using before you got the G25?

Quote from Bob Smith :You know it's funny, I've never NOT used the G25 in that way. Why else would you spend that much on a wheel set and not use half of it? I've beaten some old pbs running like this too so I really don't believe it's much slower, if you're used to it. LFS is more about getting involves than laptimes anyway (unless you're biggie).

Amen, Bob.

On a related note, I set a PB tonight at SO1 in the XRT (52.4x... not exactly setting the world alight!). Admittedly, I had only done a handful of laps there anyway, but I was happy nonetheless! I am definitely getting faster.

I think it will be possible to get very close to WR times with the G25, but I truly believe that left-foot braking and autoclutch will always give you that extra tenth here or there. That said, I think it is literally in the order of tenths (depending on the car/track combo), not seconds, and not enough that people can really blame the G25 for their being slow. A quick driver will be quick with either setup, he will just (most likely) be a smidgen quicker without the G25.

Quote from CharlesMartin :Speed is not the only issue here too. I drove a lot of races in STCC servers where my lap times were 1 or 2 seconds per lap slower than people around me but they kept crashing, hitting grass etc. which allowed me to score points up to my silver licence and even some victories once in a while

This is true, but if anything it's harder to maintain consistency with the G25. It's easy to fluff up a shift, and it's harder to be as consistent on the brakes as you have to physically move your foot off one pedal and onto the other.

I am definitely significantly slower with my G25 than I was with my DFP.

I used to use 500-720 deg on the DFP and, if anything, the G25 wheel is EASIER to use in 720 than the DFP in 500 because the FFB is so much better. So I don't think the wheel turn is slowing you down.

Going from left-foot braking to right-foot braking slows you down considerably, as does having to heel-toe downshift rather than just 'blip' with your right foot.

Gone is your ability to carry a little throttle under brakes (helps with stability without hurting turn-in; sort of a sneaky way to get 'the best of both worlds') and your transition from brake to throttle and vice-versa will inevitably be slower and not as smooth.

I have been a hardcore left-foot braker since GPL back in the day, and in every sim I have played I've always found it beneficial to carry some throttle under brakes... not anymore, I'm afraid!

But, as others have mentioned, it is now way more fun and way more 'realistic'! It would be great if someone setup a hardcore G25 server so that we could all compete against each other.

With regards to setups, be careful with the WR setups as some are designed to be used with a trailing throttle under brakes. Just move the brake bias forward 2-5%, and that should fix any 'spinning-out-under-brakes-if-I-even-THINK-about-turning-in' issues that you (I!) may have.

Viva la G25!

Great, thanks again Woz.

Do you or anyone else know what the most realistic gear/clutch settings would be on the FOX, FO8 and GTR? I know that they are technically not real cars, but I'm assuming that they are based on an F3, F3000 and FIA GT. Do these cars use paddle shifters, sequential sticks or H-pattern shifters? Is the clutch used for downshifts only, or all the time?

Thanks for you post, Woz.

To summarise: 720deg in the logitech panel with wheel turn comp. of 1 in LFS will give perfectly linear steering and a 1:1 real-wheel-to-virtual-wheel steer ratio. Have I got that right?

In what way does the clutch not operate correctly?

Once we get all the correct information together, I will try to collate it all into a G25 for LFS setup guide (unless someone has done it already! Please post links if so).
Specific view and control options for each car

It would be great if LFS would 'remember' what options I like when driving different cars.

For example, switching from the BF1 to the XRT means going from 80 deg FOV to 90 deg FOV and from paddle shift to H-pattern. As it is now, I have to manually change the settings each time I change cars. Being able to save specific settings for each car would make this much easier.

Quote from XsX! :just set wheel to 900 degrees in logitech panel, and then in game 900 degrees too, with, if i remember well, wheel compensation to 1.
doing that, each car will have the right steer ratio

But then I won't have the FFB 'stop' kicking in at full lock. I think it is probably better (although more time-consuming) to change the max. lock in the logitech panel for each car.

And isn't wheel turn compensation 0 fully linear and 1 non-linear?

That's all well and good if all you want to do is try and set world records, but there are many drivers out there much more interested in getting the most accurate driving experience, even if it means going slower.

I'm currently adjusting to proper unassisted manual shifting with my G25 and it is going to take a lot of practice. I'm currently much slower than I was on my DFP using left foot braking, but it's a great challenge and much more realistic.
Realistic Shifter + wheel settings - G25
sam1600

Hello blokes,

I've just purchased the G25 and it is fantastic. Great to see it is fully supported by LFS as well.

But now I have a bit of a dilemma as to which shifter and wheel settings to use for each car. My aim is to use the most realistic or accurate settings for each car.

At the moment, I am using:

For road cars: 720deg, H-pattern shift w/clutch

For GTR: 540deg, Sequential shift w/clutch (do these cars use the clutch on changes? Do they have paddle shifters?)

For FOX and FO8: 450deg, sequential shift w/clutch (do these cars use the clutch on changes? Do they have paddle shifters?)

For BF1: 400deg, paddle shift no clutch

Does this sound about right? I suppose the only cars I'm a bit unsure of are the GTRs, the FOX and the FO8.

I concur that RBR is a fantastic sim. Easily the best rally sim ever and right up there with the all-time greats overall (GPL, NR2003, LFS).

These are the sort of sims that are so good that people will still be (and in the case of GPL, still are!) playing them many, many years after their initial release.
