While I would be willing to pay for them, the inclusion of real life tracks may not necessarily be a good thing.

Too many people are going to gripe about every little inconsistency because such and such game did it better, or they drove that track in real life and LFS got it all wrong, etc.

One of the best things about LFS is the fact that most of the cars and tracks are not real. The developers don't have to waste their collective energies in recreating real-life tracks and cars. Instead, they can focus on more important aspects in the game that please the community as a whole.

I have nothing but praise for the tracks we have now and I look forward to seeing some new "fantasy" tracks released in the future.

Here's the images I am talking about. I''ll probably end up replacing them w/ something else. They look alright in 2-D but get washed out in the 3-D image. The images look better in the Viewer than they do in the screens but they're still not up to snuff. I know some of it has to do with the way the cars show reflections and shine.

Just playing around and learning layers. I am not happy with the way Evil Monkey and the POW/MIA flag came out in pic #4 and if I can't get it cleared up I'll remove them. Otherwise it's a done deal.

Anyone know how to get a .jpg image to come out clear instead of washed out and fuzzy? My knowledge of Photoshop is pretty basic.

I'll post one of the images I am talking about below.

Quote from neo-truth :Greetings, all. This is my first attempt at a skin. I started just doodling around and it ended up taking on a P-38 Lightning (WW2 fighter plane) theme, so I went with it.

I feel like it's still missing something though, perhaps just some decals, but I'd love to hear some feedback and suggestions.

(P.S. The pinup girl is called "Slightly Dangerous". I felt like it applied (to my driving).) :P

Great Job! I love the cannon ports in the nose.

I play IL2 when I'm not playing LFS and have been fiddling around with various paint schemes modeled after P-47's / P-51's / P-40's. I never thought of trying my designs on the MRT though. It looks right.

I have a lot "shark's mouth" images. They all look good when pasted in 2-D, but the reflections/shine in 3-D washes them out too much. I figure I'll have to sit down one day and draw 'em myself instead of trying to resize and paste .jpg's. I know...lazy on my part.

If anyone has a decent WWII "shark's mouth design (or tips on making it look right in 3-D), please let me know.

Keep 'em coming.

InSim - What is it?

Prepare yourselves...for the stupidest question ever....

Can someone explain to me, in layman's terms, what InSim is/does?

I have searched the forums, but I only see numerous posts/ threads that mention certain aspects regarding InSim. I might have missed a post that explained it, but searching "InSim" in the forums brings up search results of "1 of 25 of 500" pages regarding the topic. I know I can narrow the search, but that's still a lot of readin'...and I'm from Texas and we don't read much...LOL. Just kidding. Seriously, I'm really not clear what it is.

The manual didn't tell me much. Just tutorials explaining how to connect to InSim. Part of the problem is that I'm not what many would call "computer savvy". I am just wondering if it deals with options within the simulation or if it is for online hosting. I've been playing LFS a lot more lately and I just don't want to miss out on anything cool.

I figure I'm about to get really embarrassed when realize the answer to my question was quite obvious.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If I use the shifter, I use the clutch. Always.

If I use sequential, I set it to Auto-clutch. The benefit is that you can still use the clutch manually with auto-clutch enabled.

The greatest benefit for me with using the clutch manually (whether I use shifter/sequential) is getting a fast, smooth, straight starting take-off with little to no wheelspin. This really helps prevent "false starts" and is a great advantage with patch-X.

The clutch also helps me keep the car stable during downshifts when using the shifter. Also, if I accidentally drop down a gear or two too low, I can just push in the clutch and correct my mistake before the car gets squirmy or completely wipes. Sometimes it's quicker to step on the clutch in that situation than to try to click back up on the sequential shifter...sometimes.

If the track has a lot of tight/slow corners (KY GP Long/Fern Bay Black), I use sequential so I can keep my hands on the wheel more. If I race a more "corner friendly" track (Westhill), I'm faster with the shifter/clutch. It all comes down to personal taste / personal skill in the end.

Forcing same set-ups would be a good option on some servers for a change of pace. However, I don't think it would be fair to implement it too much due to the various driving styles and hardware amongst the different players.

I normally use a G-25, but when some of my squadmates jump on, they use a KB & mouse. To be fair, I'll use KB&M also and my "awesome" setup (for my wheel) is all over the place when using the mouse. (I know...I know...LOL.)

As for me, I've downloaded and tried countless setups on various cars. Many WR sets I have tried were useless to me because of the differences between my driving style and the creator's driving style. I like to brake before I turn in and I prefer to take cleaner lines. Many, not all, but many WR sets drift around and slide a lot as you can see in many WR replays and they won't help you remain competitive in races longer than 5-10 laps since the camber/toe angles are so extreme the tires wear very quickly. Furthermore, I have found many WR sets are less than friendly when cantact is made between to vehicles. It often comes down to personal preference and driving style.

The most important "setup" for me is gear ratio. As long as my car has decent acceleration throughout the powerband and handles predictably, I am happy. For example, in the underpowered UF1 races, I loved my personal "suspension" setup because it fits my style. However, I would always get dusted in the straights by cars I kept up with or passed around the corners. Because I am competent, but not great at setting gear ratios yet (even w/ the help of the GR Calc.) I took some WR gear setups as a testbed, set my gear ratio to my liking, and kept my "suspension" setup that suited my style. I improved considerably once my car's acceleration was competitive with the majority of the field.

As it was said before, setups are not the end all be all to winning races. The most important thing is to learn your vehicles limitations and increase your skill level. I could have the best setup in the world, but I wouldn't have a snowball's chance of winning against a truly skilled racer that mastered both his car and the track running a default setup.

My friends and I were KB&M in a server a few nights ago. A driver who won most of the races asked what we were using? We responded KB&M and he said he was using an X-Box controller. I told my friends on TS that I was gonna switch to the wheel and "put him down". Although my race improved considerably with the wheel, I still lost a couple to him for no other reason than the fact that he was more skilled with his particular car on that specific track.

I took a break from racing sims for a short while. When I started playing again last month, I thought it would be a nice change of pace to try GTR2. I am so glad I did because it made me appreciate just how good LFS really is. Besides the Dubai track (which I really liked), I did not experience anything in GTR2 that really appealed to me. I found it to be nothing more than an updated GTR. Whoop-ti-doo. Although I absolutely love the deep and authentic car sounds in the other ISI sim, GT:Legends, I find the car sounds in LFS more useful. Just listening to the different pitches as the cars in LFS accelerate and decelerate provides me crucial feedback beyond mere visuals. Furthermore, the sounds in LFS are better at relaying the position, audibly, of the other cars around me. Combine this with the echo effects and I have no real complaints.

Because LFS is primarily an online race sim, it is understandable that the AI be given a lower priority in development. However, I do use the AI on occasion. The reason for this simple. It allows me to practice racing "in the pack" without ruining someone's race in an online session. As for now, the AI sticks to a pretty strict line and doesn't present much of a challenge. However, the AI's mostly predictable behavior is adequate for these types of practice sessions. I can practice running close to other cars without touching, get a feel for, and adjust my braking distances as cars ahead of me approach turns (which is way different from the "flat-out" style of hotlapping), learn the near exact location of a competitor's car by it's sound relative to my position, and practice recovering/controlling my car when I get rear-ended by the AI.
Practicing off-line on occasion can certainly benefit everyone's experience when they step on-line.

I believe in courtesy first and foremost. When I race online, I always let the faster/more skilled drivers around me. I even set macros on my shifter that say "Pass on my LEFT" / "Pass on my RIGHT" / "Sorry - MY FAULT" etc. and I am ALWAYS extremely cautious @ T1. I am quite competitive for the most part, but I have lost many a race (and will lose many more in the future) for the sake of good sportsmanship. If I wreck into someone bad and it is my fault, I slow down until they overtake me again.

However, it is inevitable that my race will often be ruined by those less courteous. As much as I hate to say this, I almost expect to get knocked around a bit in the public servers. I was playing in the Demo servers recently (trying to get some of my squadmates interested in LFS) and was shocked to see how bad it was in there. A couple of them really liked the Demo and expressed interest in buying S2. I was happy for their decision, but at the same time, I really wanted to get the heck out of those Demo servers. I was really getting upset at players that intentionally rammed for position / rammed me off the track as I took the proper line / etc. Some would purposely drive the other way trying to ruin it for everyone. At least it's not so bad in the S2 public servers.

I had trouble getting images into the browser on the above post, so I ended up posting twice. (I just realized I could upload images directly from my computer...DUH.) Since it is an "edit", here's the FOX I did last night. Still searching for some good graphics, but I intend to keep it pretty simple.

I just started skinning recently when I decided to enter the car in the first 2 pics in the LX contest. My Photoshop/Paintshop knowledge is laughable so it takes me a really long time to do some pretty basic stuff.

Here's a couple of ones I am working on and some critique would be really helpful.

Used brushed aluminum texture for hood and fenders and wood texture for body. I thought it came out pretty cool. I haven't seen anyone use wood on the LX's yet and I think it gives it that "vintage look".

The blue LX is the 1st one I attempted. I think the checkered pattern is too "gawdy" (sp.) and I am looking for a replacement pattern.

Thanks for the patch.

I do have an intermittent problem though. I downloaded the patch with no problem.

Half the time Ver. V loads up and the other half of the time Ver. X loads up.

Any ideas about how I can fix this?

Oval track racing would be great. I'm a big NASCAR fan and I think some oval track racing would be another option that would make for a nice change of pace from the twisty tracks. This game desperately needs some new tracks.

I lot of people are concerned that the longer tracks are not as fun to play online. I can certainly concur with that. However, many of us are hot-lappers and I for one would be thrilled to hot-lap a track all day long that took 8-10+ minutes to complete a lap. I'll wear out G-25's left and right with a big smile on my face.

I love the Ring, but I'll race anything similar so long as it's fun and challenging. Something similar to the Ring would be a tremendous benefit to this already great game.

Since I am still a big fan of GT Legends, I do believe the game would benefit from some classic '60's & '70's race cars like the Mustangs, Escorts, Corvettes, British roadsters, and the American big-block Cobra. GT Legends isn't the "end-all be-all" racing game in the physics department, but it dishes out immersion on a grand scale IMO. When I load up a game in GTL, I really feel like I have stepped back in time and strapped myself into a mechanically simple, yet powerful racing machine where I win by true grit and skill...without the help of fuel injection, computers, ABS, traction control, etc. When I complete a race in GTL, whether I won or lost, I feel like I really accomplished something to make it to the end of the race. I do not experience the same racing thrill in LFS...at least not to the same extent. I realize LFS and GTL are two completely different games, but I think it would be neat to see some older cars.

I'm not knocking LFS at all. It is my preferred sim of choice because of it's simplicity, the fun factor, stable coding, and the committed team of developers. I really enjoy hot-lapping and an occasional online race in LFS.

However, sometimes I need to drive something that looks "real". The fictitious cars in LFS look kinda generic on the interior and exterior. By generic I mean that when I enter the GARAGE MENU, I look at all the cars available and nothing stands out about any of them. Nothing that makes me really WANT to drive a particular car. I pick one because it handles well or because it is fun sorta to drive. That's all fine and dandy, but I believe LFS needs some cars that look fun to drive also. I don't "feel" like I am in a real car. I know, I can "pretend" I am in a Mini, or a BMW/Audi, or a Celica, or a Starion, but "pretending" ruins the immersion for me. If I need to "pretend" to drive something, I would like some additional options...The point is, I would prefer to "pretend" to drive something that at least looks cool. I'd much rather "pretend" to drive something with some V-8 low end torque than a high revving turbo 4 banger. There is nothing wrong with 4 bangers. (My 5.0 Mustang is pretty quick and I've been dusted plenty of times by some little import job.) I would just prefer some V-8 options in the game...alternatives to the normal tuner-type cars that bombard most racing games these days. I'll happily live with "look-a-likes" so long as the physics and the all important sounds are spot-on believable. Like I said before, I'm not knocking the game at all. I'm just recommending a few more options. I would love to open my GARAGE MENU sometime in the near future, look at all the cars, and actually see a few that make me say, "I'm gonna drive that one...YEAH!!!" Not because it has all the latest technology do-dads, but because it looks really cool, and sounds real, and feels real, and it makes me want to get out on the track and hang on for dear life and have fun doing it. That's what makes a racing game a racing sim.

Mark my words, if some classic type racing cars were included in future versions of LFS, the the amount of online racers would triple. Sim racers eat that stuff up because many are sick and tired of racing the same 'ol, same 'ol. Modern cars just don't have the personality that the older one's possess.

I know...I am already asking for too much, but I think it would be cool to see some '80's American muscle too. Maybe something that looks like a Buick Grand National/T-Type , or a 5.0 Mustang (please, please, please), or a Z-28 Camaro. They aren't spectacular "handlers on the road courses, but they would be fun on the drag strip.

Actually, this makes me bring up a point. A drag strip is included in the game, but I rarely see it used. I've never been a really big fan of drag racing, but I would definitely be interested in trying some online drag racing providing LFS S3 includes some cars that actually "looked the part".

I was playing around with some of the tools in Photoshop and was tinkering around with this hideous skin when I screwed up. I accidentally saved my skin with the default file name.:banghead:

http://img3.imageslash.com/upload/img6/4WG44x56876.jpg

Could someone please post up a zip with the original file "XFG_DEFAULT" so I don't have to spend all day trying to revert it back?

I searched around a bit and was hoping to find a database or something that might have the default files, but was unsuccessful. I would greatly appreciate it.:thumb3d:
Noob help on gear setup

I like to race online and am currently racing alot in the UF 1000. (I know...that's weak....but I try to master one car at a time.) Long story short, I have tinkered and tinkered with my track-specific setups (over 100's of laps) and I am pretty happy with them as they are fairly forgiving and responsive to my particular driving style. However, the main problem I have is in the gearing. I think I have a pretty decent setup, but when I start a race against real folks, they always finish way ahead of me. I can hang with them good in the corners but they always seem to pull away from me with their superior acceleration and top speeds...often having lap times of a good 3-7 seconds faster than me. I have read a lot of information in the forums/manual/websites on how to tune gear ratios, but I have not had any luck when I try to do it myself. Any good pointers/tips? Whatever I am doing is NOT working and I am getting sorta frustrated. (P.S. My camber and toe settings are not drastic as I know that the my contact patch would affect overall grip, acceleration, and braking. My tire temp's are really close across the board.)
Any help would be appreciated...especially a good gear setup for Fern Bay Green. Maybe it would give me a good place to start.

Crackling sound
PlusP

When playing online and single player, the sound sometimes crackles and breaks up when I am around a lot of other cars. As I distance myself from the pack, either fore or aft, it goes away and all the engine/car/etc. sounds return to normal. This is especially apparent on the South City course. It doesn't always happen, but when this occasionally pops up, it is certainly annoying.

Could this a bug or a hardware/setting issue?

I haven't had this issue in any other racing game so I assume/hope it is a setting issue.

Soundcard = SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Audio [A400]
Car sound voulme = 10.0
Skid volume boost = 1.0

On the commute to work today I revved my engine at the stoplight and felt the stick vibrate and move a little as it always does.

Then I had this really cool thought:

It would be awesome if some kind of realistic force feedback could be transmitted through the gearshift on the H-shifter. If Logitech (or some other manufacturer) made their H-shifter vibrate and move like a real shifter, I would definitely buy it.

I've never heard anyone discuss this before.

Any thoughts? Comments? Would LFS or any other game support FF on the gearshift if there was such a thing?

Oh well. Just a thought. My G-25 shipped today!

Thanks Gizz. Looks like I am here to stay. I already talked a friend at work into buying the game and a decent wheel and I am gonna try to get some of my Joint Operations squad members to get in on LFS too. My squad leader is a graphic design artist (in the UK) and I think he would do exceptionally well at skinning. He is great at modding/skinning/sounds/etc.

Quote from bbman :How? By tinkering with the tire physics, so when you start to slide, that's it? Or using massive amounts of blur and shaders and other effects you'll never see in real life? Come on, think it through... The only thing you need to change is perspective, because looking at a 19-21" monitor is like running through the street with blinkers on...

I am not knocking the physics in LFS. It's just something I need to adapt to. I am new to LFS (week and a half) and I enjoy it so much I uninstalled GTR/GTL. The only point that I was trying to make is that when the speedometer shows I am "going fast", I never feel like I am "hauling A$$".
