Quote from NightEye :Is this because a G25 is pretty heavy for an old system?

No idea, as I alluded to, I don't have a G25. I don't think a well designed game controller should give a computer a hard time myself.

Quote :I've had my Sidewinder FF for 8 years now and it's starting to die really slowly.

It's amazing how long Sidewinder product take to die sometimes; mine, a stick, has been a tiny bit sloppy for some years now, but still does the job just fine. I know at least two others doing about the same, I'm not sure how many years old they all must be, but they are still hanging in there. I looked around for a replacement when I first noticed the tiniest bit of slop in the system, and in 2 or 3 years looking I did not find any kind of bargains with which I would feel totally happy. I've been watching things come and go with interest during that time though.

Quote : Thinking of getting a G25 aswell (as G27 doesn't offer much more for 2,5 times the price), but not sure if my pc can handle it.

Mostly this just reflects how unrealistically expensive controllers are becoming compared to everything else in the system. I have a feeling this level of price modelling may not be sustainable for very much longer. Not as long as we have to live in the real world. There might be better value to be had by building one's own too. It's becoming a very attractive proposition. Within reason, you could have almost any wheel etc. that took your fancy, into the bargain at that point.

Quote from mumu :Hi,

I have the Microsoft Sidewinder wheel with FF. Should i keep this wheel or buy the Logitech G25? I didn't try the G25 yet. How are these two wheels in comparison? Is the G25 worth the money if i change from MS Sidewinder? Just want to hear some opinions, thanks.

I'd look at what Logitech say is new and improved in the G27, that will give you a list of what might not be quite so thrilling about the G25. Whatever is on that list is the least you might have to learn to live with(out) on a G25.

I'd also consider a new mobo, cpu and 4 GB of ram, and probably a few other nice and useful bits, as right now you can get some pretty useful kit for about that sort of money. This stuff could have a much wider impact on your life. It could easily turn out to be much better value for the same money.

No matter which one you happen to look at, game controllers cost way too much, and wear out too quickly once they try to offer anything more than the basics. This perspective was gained from reading things people have posted once they are having troubles or finding things that annoyed them about their choice and said so.

Personally, and more generally, I have an MS Sidewinder stick, and that has lasted and lasted like a champ through many, many flight sim hours. I got a momo and one or two other bits from Logitech, and so far that has all been an absolutely fine experience. I have a few controllers bearing the Saitek brand name and I would suggest avoiding that brand under all circumstances to avoid disappointment, they have all had features that ultimately were not entirely wonderful, not bad, but really not great either. More than that I can't personally vouch for.

Hope this insight is useful to you.

You're getting the idea; It's worth bearing in mind that anyone who crashes into your rear is always driving beyond their capacity to brake adequately, let them worry over that one! Try not to let it annoy you if they do though, as plenty don't know about that aspect of being in control of their vehicle. They just probably never got around to thinking about it.

Quote from George11212 :No it was definately Rockingham, I'm 100% certain. Cheers for the help guys I think I'm gunna have another look at LFS when S3 is released and hopefully Rockingham will be on there!

Thanks

George

From the point of view of a fairly recent purchaser I'd say that is a very wise decision indeed. There is no 100% solid info, so waiting to see what gets released next is the only gamble free choice to be had.

Also waiting to see how long it takes to be released is the only other info one could glean given how things presently stand, and have done for a not entirely insignificant amount of time.

All credit where it is due though; what there is now offers some fun and is quite well done in places, some areas of motor sport are better served than others. It is on the brink of becoming a bit long in the tooth here and there though; notably recent DirectX versions, X64, and multiple cores are not used to any great advantage as far as one can tell. These are by now to be seen as contemporary technologies. In fairness the older tech used has had a great deal wrung out of it.

Graphic design elements of the interface could use a rethink in some respects. Depends on how good your eyesight is really; if it is not at least 100% perfect 20/20 it can prove somewhat frustrating in use. I'm not yet certain how tweakable that bit might be though.

potentially the next release could prove rather interesting, if and when it does eventually put in an appearance.

I'm not quite sure I got it with the caveat, as it seems to suggest that if I set up a machine and dedicate it to being an LFS server and pay for the bandwidth then I am not allowed to use it? I think I still know a raw deal when I see one.

I'd imagine that must mean I misunderstood, as otherwise it makes no sense that I can fathom.

I noted that you can limit the cars, so limiting to S1 RX cars and tracks would seem to be the way to go to have effectively the same thing as S1 only. S2 welcome as long as they are happy with S1 kit. S1 users of course would not even notice any difference!

That is a really interesting point you raise towards the end there. I wonder, I've not looked into any of this at all yet, but is it technically feasible to run an S1 only server? You've made me wonder. I shall perhaps grab a copy of the server later to see if there's any clues to be gained.

I'm a firm believer that support and encouragement are a two way street. S1 only might be a bit more supporting to S1 racers and a bit more encouraging to devs to provide S2 purchase incentives to the whole community rather than merely to a sub set of the paying customer base. Those who supported development by buying S1 so far, are quite probably due some ongoing support in S2 it would seem. Tracks being the biggest thing as cars tend to come and go.

Quote from geeman1 :Add these two together you can see why almost everyone has bought S2 even if it's still in alpha stage.

I'll possibly buy it too, once it reaches it's "having cars and tracks for rally cross, like S1 does" stage.

Quote from NotAnIllusion :According to the LFS website, patch Z was officially released on 2nd July 08.

- LFS is a 3 stage release consisting of LFS S1, LFS S2 and LFS S3. Think of it like Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3.
- Each stage consists of an alpha, beta and release phase. Major advancements are denoted by incrementing the 0.5.
- Each phase consists of a series of test patches, big test patches get their own letter, like X or Z. Small test patches are denoted by the number postfix.

So LFS S2 Alpha 0.5 Z15 means we are using a late alpha of the second major "retail" version. Which can be construed as approaching beta, if you want to be really optimistic

Oh wow, that is all quite a revelation!

So basically by some quirk of fate I have registered for S1 which it turns out is the only version to make it as far as retail, and S2 has not yet got as far as beta, but rather a lot of people bought it in this present alpha stage. Good lord! That is not something you'd expect to see happen every day.

Thanks for your truly immense insight. I'd never have guessed it was like that in a million years, but sure enough that does seem to be the way of it. Most odd.

S2z is how old?
MudPuppy
S1 licensed
Hi All,

Not had LFS for very long, just a few weeks. I'm trying to figure out how old the present S2z version is.

Also where would one see announcements for new versions? What is the usual time between updates? Will the next one be S3 or some other number(s) before S3?

I'm unclear on that as we seem to have simply run out of alphabet, but a major upgrade does not seem anywhere near ready from what little I have seen reported so far.

I am getting the impression that a number of people have gone out and bought a clutch, and now feel they are somehow disadvantaged. That is about the shape of the message emerging here isn't it?

Until I saw this thread I felt I probably wanted a clutch pedal, eventually, but now, well, it's a lot less clear cut as issues go.

There also seems to be a side serving of wanting a dress code, which has nothing to do with actual driving or improvement of the software.

Well if nothing else it has solved one area of mild indecision in my life, buy a fridge or a G25(7), based on what has been said here, the fridge wins!

This campaign appears to have resulted in anti clutch pedal marketing, probably not the original intention, but there it is.

(3) Start LFS and enable InSim at whatever port you would like.

I'll have a proper help file, readme, and such if it seems that people are wanting me to continue. So hopefully I can get more than just 8 people so far download the program.

Thanks very much for this, I happened to get it working, by trial and error, while you were posting this I suspect.

Works just fine! Went straight for the main event and had it running on second machine, as it gave me more room to play with each program on separate machines.

One small point I'd add for those who never used insim before (I had not as it happens) that point 3 above translated (for me) to pressing the t key to enable talk mode, then typing /insim 29999 and then hitting enter key.

So there's your first report of working fine; Driving (and replaying) on Windows 7 RC (build 7100), and your prog running on Windows XP Pro SP3. Your program does run on windows 7 machine also but I had not quite worked out how to connect to the game at that time. Win7 runs on Intel Quad Q6600 64bit 4Gb, and XP pro on Intel Northwood 1.8a 32bit 1Gb. So, a good, solid start.

No problems that I think are of your making, but must report that should one be foolhardly and change screen resolution while doing all this it causes the insim connection to be stalled enough to lock the dash up on the second machine. Simply restarting the replay would not bring it back, so had to shut down LFS, re select the replay, and then restart the dash on the second machine. Nothing short of that would fix it. So, that's a fairly serious one at a guess, and probably one for the devs to fix I'd imagine too.

Thank you very, very much for picking this up, it's nice to know we are once again able to work with software that is currently being developed, so could potentially be more reliable than the original as new patches and things come out that might otherwise break it - this program is far too useful to lose it that way too.

First feature request: Can we have a scaling and skin facility please? (yes, I know, I am being a bit cheeky, but hey!)

Wow, glad to notice this!

I grabbed it, but now I face another issue:

All the original help and advice in this thread points to the original software and package, and that had a read me with directions apparently.

Since it's not properly available any more, could you give a quick up to date set of points to make sure of before running your package please?

I'm a n00b at this (specifically LFS) so please don't assume any kind of know how on my part! Not yet had LFS for a month I don't think, so, not long enough to know it all yet!

Hope this all works out, I would try it on my race machine first then try it out across the LAN to another machine. Will I need LFS installed on second machine or does this all work stand alone? (I'm guessing it is stand alone, but can't see any way to confirm it other than asking)

Long time coming but +1 for both.

I'd favour outdoors over arenas, perhaps less barrier problems? I've been quite lucky there so far though.

At very least, one RX course with each S number would be a fair if rather stingy covenant from the devs if we could obtain it. Ideally one within each multi track complex.

Any way, MORE SLIPPY STUFF please!

Because people have to choose to use the [spoiler] tag, whereas auto sizing would be mandatory.

+1 on the cropping, nothing wrong with a little enforced good order.

Quote from Stefani24 : Since when is a formula not a car?

For those who came late into following formula 1 car racing, and working roughly from a somewhat fading memory, wasn't it around the late nineteen eighties?

I seem to recall that at or about that time they were all converted into high speed carnival floats, and joined in what (then) became the fornightly global advertising processions.

An old mate and I have both bought S1, but we did not and do not plan to buy S2 as there is no incentive for RX fans due to there being no RX tracks in S2.

I hope the devs give us a reason to consider buying S3 or we will just have to hold on to the money instead (again). We'd love to have spent more of course, but there's literally nothing for us to spend it on. We don't have a sensible route to offer the game further financial support as things stand.

I suppose the moral of this tale is that back scratching is a two way street. We can't see any signs on-coming traffic as far as we have driven up that street to date though.

Still, we are happy driving S1 in spite of all that.

Thanks for that kind offer, I had not realised the coder had left the project, and that its currently not being developed.

I saw the request for help in the first post (last night) and was going to grab a copy so I could start looking further into it all this morning. If I had liked what I saw it was my intention to offer to make some 3d DirectX dials to help, since robust and detailed 3d content for sims is part of what I do. I've had some experience in making a 3d panel for a second computer for a couple of sims (flight sims to date, so not directly usable but the principle should be familiar) so far and it's really great to use once these things start to work reliably.

If anyone does pick up the source and is interested in making this project, or one like it, work reliably with genuine 3d on a reasonably well specified secondary machine then by all means PM me if you would like some tidy and useful dials made. I do need good quality images of the dials to be made, or I can make up dials on the fly, as long as you have a clear idea of what you want it to show. I don't use maps I hand build the entire object. Old school perhaps but the results are worth it, and very pleasing to use at any level of zoom.

I'd be happy to consider more or less any offer, but those from experienced coders with a solid and demonstrable track record for quality, reliability and project stamina would be favoured the most. My motivation is fun, and in turn, the thrill of having executed it really well. I do particularly enjoy working on 3d replicas of analogue dials. Eyesight is steadily failing so this offer is good for as long as life, luck and fate will allow.

Thank you all very much, your answers made it pretty clear pretty quick which way to go, went for S1 and very happy with it. My mate and I just had a tear about exploring the longer of the two Fern Bay rally cross tracks and had a blast.

Lots of fun and so much to explore now. We can only hope there might be more rally cross eventually, it's been handled in a way which makes it fun to drive just for the sake of driving it; even on your own, simply to see if you can get the oddities in each track down to a fine art.

I guess if there was water added, then it would make it totally complete from my standpoint! Rainy day option anyone?

Thanks very much for the second opinion on all that, I really appreciated it. We've been messing with it for about 5 days so far and like it quite well.

We can't possibly know enough yet, but it's good to see that one who has spent some time on it sees why we are thinking S1 for now would be best bang for the buck so to speak. S2 would be nice, of course, but it offers to bring nothing to the table for my particular area of interest. That's rather a shame really, I quite like more choice, it's often good to have.

Not sure what to think about the adverts issue, the only certainty with it is that the button marked exit does not do what it says on the tin. And it could at least have a timeout rather than just sitting there like a lemon. Can't see what purpose it serves once you've paid money for the thing. As a half way house I'd be happy enough to see and S2 advert if I only got S1, that would make more sense and be fair game, I'd probably pay 12 quid just to stop it doing that frankly! A credits button, now that's a thought, what about that as a half decent compromise?

Thing is, it's like there so often you just don't read it at all, like all the other advertising we get thrust at us whether wanted or not. Probably something to do with less is more.

Oh well, I digress. I may have to give it all a lot more thought.

Thanks once again for the info, and the speed with which it was delivered.

Thanks for quick responses guys.

I just got fed up with seeing it, and I'm just a miserable very ancient chap who stills thinks that "you pays your money and takes your choices" has something of a ring about it.

I'm trying to ponder the wisdom of paying to be irritated! Never mind paying two lots for that. (S1& S2)

I'd probably not join (m)any races on line but a mate of mine across the pond and I would be happy enough to race each other for the hell of it every so often. So we are both thinking on it right now.

Also I'm more into off road, and got the distinct impression that S2 had rather less off road to offer than S1. Do all tracks have a rally cross option? Could not see one way or another despite doing some looking, but possibly in wrong places to find out.

Has been quite a lot of fun so far.

Hi All,

Surely thinking about going for an upgrade to S1, however one small point I'd like to know about first; I have a small pet peeve with this so far and that is that when I click to exit, it's does a couple of advert pages before clearing off, does it still advertise like that once upgraded to S1?

I was in and out of the software for quite an extended spell trying to set a few things up how I wanted them, and that "feature" really got very old very quick during that session. I now wince every time I see it.
