get some heatsinks for the memory and the VRMs
just in case

that thermaltake is rubbish.

you wanna go aftermarket, you get this.

your 9800gt is 100W at most. i have an arctic cooling accelero s1 rev2 on my (overclocked) 4850 (>110W)with 2 12cm fans on it (with zipties ) and i get 60 degrees in furmark during the greek summer

also, do not put a stock cooler for a 9500GT (50W card) in a 9800GT (100W card).

Quote from XCNuse :And again, bump maps are a texture and lighting feature, they do not change the surface of a poly; aka you give a plain a bump map, it may appear.. 'bumpy' hence the name, but if you look at it fron the side, it will still and always be as thin as paper.

i can't accept that you of all people are forgetting about parallax mapping (i know what you're getting at, though. even with parallax mapping, the poly only appears bumpy, the physics engine won't magically take consideration of it, without additional work. for making the tarmac appear more realistic, it would help to have some kind of UV mapping ^_^ )

also, my suggestion still stands. there are coders out there who would (for free, too) improve the graphics of LFS. i wish i could devote time, i would add self shadowing, better material shaders, etc

don't think i'm one of those "OMG SHAD0RZ" guys who see hdr and get a stiffy. if there is one thing to choose to improve in LFS i would always pick 'physics' but don't downplay the importance of graphics: better graphics, more people interested, lfs becomes more popular and so on

he can try 16bit rendering instead of 32bit

wheelview camera (no cockpit)

drop the MIP bias a bit

close some mirrors

turn off the sky

well

there might be nothing he can do about the hardware, but he can tweak lfs, fo so'

what do you mean "with quality" ?

it can play LFS alright, but i doubt you can turn on antialiasing and still get high FPS

run furmark in 'stability test' for 5 minutes or so. Until the temperature doesn't change anymore.

81C is not "a lot" for a gpu, but it would be better if it was lower.

here's what i remember:

There was an early mazda model that was sold with a wankel engine... and the same model was sold with a reciprocating engine, because the wankel engine was still in very early development.

that's about it.

if you list your current set up we can see what we can use from it, in the new computer.

psu, case, dvd, hdd being the most probable candidates.

'cause with stuff from your older machine and 500quid, you can build a system around an i7.

Quote from STROBE :and the third is a Fiat, whose dealers' idea of service is to shit in your face.

****ING SECONDED

first incident: i went to the official fiat service center for my delta... they told me that the ECU is at fault for the engine shutting down after some kilometer... the dialogue was like this

- we can change the ecu
- how much is that?
- 500 (or something)
- ok, suppose we change it, as you suggest... will it solve the problem? are you sure this is the fault?
- no. but that's what the "diagnostic computer" says.

at the time i was a total newb so i couldn't troubleshoot nothing.

it went like 3 times to that service.

asked from a friend of mine, who came around when my car let me down in the middle of the street and in the 5 seconds that it took me to get to him after i pulled the lever that opens the engine door, he exclaimed "hey malaka, one of the sparkplug cables is out!"

engine came to life without a hiccup and never failed again after that.

second incident: my passenger door doesn't close easily, the engine behaves strangely when cold (i accelerate, in first, and if i let go of the accelerator, the engine drops like to 500rpm, rattles like hell, goes to 2000 and then stabilizes at idle. also, if i try to accelerate a bit harder it chokes on itself. this shouldn't be happening, it's injected) and i get a hard knock when the front right goes over anomalies or when i center the wheel after a sharp left turn. also the brakes are kinda soft and the steering wheel drifts to the left. 800 euros later, NONE of the issues were fixed, dude says that i got serious damage in the steering bar-something (not sure of the etymology) that will cost me another 800... turns out, one component is worn out that costs like 20 or so.

there have been other minor incidents similar to these in the 15 year history of this car

draw your own ****ing conclusions.

i spent 100 euros on a 512MB 4850 when there was a discount.

there certainly are similar performance cards at that price point from nvidia, the market decides that.

but it's an arbitrary choice, between ati and nvidia, really.

it's not like intel vs amd where if you're a gamer you go amd because it's a better bang per buck deal.

295 is the two-cards-sandwiched-together, right?

not the best behaving card on the market, let's face it.

ok then, i shall mail you a power supply i have here, that is faulty, and you use it in your machine. Deal?

You don't get to sue me after your pc catches fire, though...

Quote from r4ptor :Edit @ george_tsiros: See, you can do it well. Something is way wrong with my system

Yeah, you said so already that you have an intel cpu and an nvidia card :P

(j/k)

Just drop the graphics requirements man. you really need 1280xwhatever?

It's not lfs's fault, it could be a combination of OS/drivers/hardware that manifests itself as a problem under these circumstances

seems to me it scales nicely

with twice the workload, it renders, at average, more than half the frames...

try setting a maximum fps of 60.

Quote from gotspeed :i go to open lfs and i just get not responding in vista 64. havn't had any problems in the last 7 months since i built this new system. tried redownloading lfs and opening a fresh "install" of lfs nothing still not responding. what gives?

i see your problem

Warlord - Soliloquy

I feel the pain inside my heart
like a knife it tears me apart
My tears they shed I have no one
God, please tell me what i have done

I have no friends, no one who cares
nobody with love they can share
They laugh at me! I don't know why!
I lock the door and i cry!

I see myself I am a man
just like you and all of your friends
My heart so warm shattered like glass
don't know how much longer I can last

So when I die no one will care
I ask you do you think that it's fair?
Soliloquy! Well that's my plea
Won't someone please believe in me?

Alone again! I'm . . . alone again!
Alone again! I'm . . . alone again!
Well that's how it will be 'til the end.

it's abuse of the term 'engineer', since you haven't actually studied chem/el/comp/soc/whatever engineering

might as well start calling myself "pc scientist".

besides, it's been two weeks... i coul've mailed him a cd by now!
