I presume youre not a fan of welded diffs then Tinytacohead, i have to say, i thought the idea was stupid, all that scrubbing and skipping when doing tight turns and couldnt see the point, until i drove with one, they really arent that bad to drive on at all.

They do take a bit of getting used to, the margin between grip and no grip is reduced, but at the same time its more consistent too in that that margin never changes unless its wet, unlike an lsd or even an open diff, bumps, road camber, tightening bends, body roll, etc, can and does make other diffs change which wheel they do or do not wish to drive, which can induce sudden oversteer as if from nowhere, with permanent 2 wheel drive that factor disappears, a far more predictable setu.

Plus it is ideal for drifting, which is something i plan to do once i have mastered the art, as im still at the stage where i apply too much or not enough opposite lock, its a learning curve, im not ready for the track yet, because if i were to bend it i would be devastated.

Tonight at a car photoshoot/meet i was at in my town there were 10 BMW's there, 2 325 saloons, 2 325 tourings, my 323 coupe (which is 2.8 powered) , a 320 coupe, a 318 compact with a 2.8 in, (all E36 shape) my old diesel E46, and a 2l E30 saloon, and another E30 saloon with a 2.5 engine in (i think) and the only 2 without a welded diff were the 320 coupe and my old 320d E46, so this alone proves that they must be OK< bacause f not then the majority wouldnt have had them.

There obviously wasnt just BMWs there though, we had skylines, an r32 gtr, another one that had loads of letters, gtst or something, a few evo's, one impreza, couple of 350z's a 2.8 capri with a welded diff (old skool cool) a sierra rs500, an RX-7, the usual saxo/corsa/fiesta people, or as we call them the'first car crowd' (everyone has to start somewhere) a bloke in a Chrysler 300C who thought he was the boy doing burnouts, that was until my american friend manny turned up in his caddy cts-v, which has had all sorts of mods and runs at about 650bhp, he didnt even need to do anything silly like a burnout, it was car of the night

Edit: this was the caddy last year, when all it had was something to do with pulleys (i dont understand) and a remap, now it has different headers, different exhaust, bigger superchargers and a better remap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfqLo-pO3F8

If you mean the angel eyes, then they are already fitted, the guy i bought it from never even realised they were there, it was only when i was investigating what fitment of headlight bulbs it has that i found the wiring tucked neatly away behind the lights, 2 3 pin female ended sockets each side, coming directly out of each light lense, cant find a good picture of the connector i mean online so this is the nearest thing i can find, imagine this connector, but a bit slimmer, and black, plus there isnt a cable in the middle hole, just the 2 wires.

Front/rear indicators...

Side repeaters...

Headlights...

Number plate lights...

Next job will be to wire up the angel eyes that i never knew it had until today, looks pretty basic, just wire into the sidelight circuit, shouldnt be too bad.

I dont mate, it is a standard diff that has been welded up, the previous owner had it done a few months ago, by the same guy who welded my mx5 diff up actually, oh how i have missed tight corners at low speeds, skip scrub skip lol

Tyre use is certianly going to be an issue due to all the scrubbing tho, and with 235/40/17 rubber, could get expensive, may drop down to 215/45, the same as the front has on.

Quote from BigPeBe :I would much prefer the predictability of locked diff, you know it's going to kick sideways and it's easier to toy around with the rear end when it does.

Exactly this, as i have found tonight, yeah, its a heck of a lot easier to end up sideways, takes barely any effort at all in fact, but its also a heck of a lot easier to keep control of too, in the dry its a bit more snappy, but in the wet it just glides round if you wish, its strangely quite peaceful actually, as you dont need buckets of revs.

Makes my 2.8 with 190 hp sound pretty pants by comparison, altho the previous owner did have it rolling roaded with a result of 202hp, although by his own admission it wasnt running right then, i know its plenty quick enough for me as it is anyway, it hasnt rained since i have had it though, which could prove interesting, as it has a 2.5l locked diff in there at the moment, although will probably end up changing it back to the 2.8 standard item if it proves too twitchy.

Quote from Shotglass :yes but you could help not buying cars you can afford to maintain and with that history of treating a car or rather turning it into a complete wreck should be ample reason for anyone never to buy a car with your name in its owner history

Fair point, but you cant really budget for, or expect a gearbox and clutch to nuke itself without warning, which is what it did, we will agree to disagree on this point i think

But yeah, done it, found out the reason why my mate wanted the swap now too, what i didnt realise is that he had some speeding fines come through from when he briefly had an M3, (which some **** stole) and as he is only in his early 20's, can no longer afford to insure the 325 and not be crippled financially (3k plus quotes!) the 2l diesel is a much more sensible and practical option for him.

So yeah, picked it up tonight, first thing i did was take off the bonnet bra thing, i hate those, and although they do serve a purpose to avoid stone chips, they also make the paint sweat, and you only need one grain of dirt to get between it and the bonnet and it buggers the paint up, so thats now in the boot.

The next job its getting is a serious deep clean, its far from bad, just grubby in places, the interior shows the dirt quite badly as its cream leather, ill be buying an amount of cleaning products in the very near future, or some leather dye and have it black, not sure what i want to do yet, it drives like a dream though, and is f**king fast too!

and thats before we get to the horrific disfiguments you put that poor car through

Convertible cars sweat, fact. parked up all over winter with no garage to store it in, i cant help the weather.

and what disfigurements, i fitted different wheels and a boot spoiler for ****s sake, you really are getting so very boring, get a life, serious.

Quote from Shotglass :blah

Define 'mistreat' i much prefer the term 'modify'

Although i have to say, i dont get why you have such a bee in your bonnet about the mods i did to the '5, sure, it wasnt to everybodys taste, but when people on the 2 or 3 mx-5 forums were complimenting my efforts then i was doing something right surely, plus i dont see how fitting a mazda rear spoiler and mazda rear spats could ever be classed as mistreatment, by that comparison if i were to put an alpina spoiler (for instance) on this e36 then i would be totally ruining it, right?

The only things that i did which i agree was tacky as f**k was the green neons, that was shit, but overall, a black and white colour scheme, spoiler, spats, and 15" wheels was pretty much all that i did to it that wasnt a standard option, oh yeah, and the welded diff.

Beema fans, if you owned an e46 320d 9as i do) and wanted something with a bit more go, and were offered a mint condition e36 325i coupe as a swap, would you do it?

this is the car that im thinking of swapping mine for...

I think i probably will do it, but just wondered if anyone had any opinions on if its a good idea or not.

the beema is aliiiive!!!

Turns out that it was simply the return fuel pipe had come off at the engine bay end, quite how i do not know, but the mechanic said there is no evidence of the pipes being caught anywhere along the underside of the car and being pulled off in that way, which is what i was expecting, but all mended now anyway.

Well, until i managed to unplug the passenger occupancy sensor wiring by accident when rooting about under the seat for something earlier on, something i didnt realise i had done until i got back to my place, so as expected, even after plugging it all back in i have an airbag warning light on, ffs lol

My '46 is still dead, mate never turned up throughout nearly 2 weeks so i took it to a garage, who after having it for 2 days rang me this afternoon to say they couldnt do anything because its too low and they cant get it on either of their post lifts.

This despite me using the EXACT same make and model of lift when i had my coilovers fitted so i know it WILL go on, although you have to take the round plates off the ends of the arms in order to do so, which due to them being a garage and health and safety etc, they arent prepared to do that.

So tomorrow my cousins husband is coming with a truck and taking it to his garage, they are actually a light commercial / HGV garage, but they do have a car sized pit to work in (it used to be my uncles car garage years ago) so there will be no lifting issues, fingers crossed ill have my baby back by next weekend

I do love my beema, and bmw's in general, but it seems that regardless of country etc, people seem to be far more in love with the e36 and/or bbs rims than any other BMW, sure, they are a nice car, i cant work out why they appear to have a much bigger following than any other though.

Quote from ColeusRattus :I think you mixed up "pussy" with "intelligent person".

And trust me, I have nothing against idiots leaving the human gene pool. I do oppose them using cars for that though, as they tend to take sensible people with them.

He did in fact mention when nobody else is around, so your argument of taking sensible people with them is pretty invalid to be frank.

And yes, donuts will kill tyres pretty quick, and so do locked diffs on the road too, even running a locker without doing any kind of drifting on my set of road tyres still killed them inside a few months, just 2 or 3 donuts will wear the tyres tens of times faster than usual, and when you start to get smoke then yeah, your really accelerating the speed of wear.

Broken beema

Im not exactly sure of how to guage the actual amount, but a 10 mile journey the other day used 60 miles worth of diesel according to the trip meter, because 50 miles worth had been leaking out behind me with me totally unaware, that is until it started to rain, and the roads got more bumpy and with more corners, diesel soaked rear tyres on wet roads is, errr, interesting, since it was parked up on friday morning its lost a further 70 odd miles worth of fuel, this is no drip, its a bastard big leak, the car goes away either tomoro or tuesday night and should be back to me all fixed by friday, i am lost without a car
