Having the in-game driver do any functions other than steering never works without looking weird.

Animations for pushing buttons and changing gear can only happen after you actually do it, which IMO is much worse than not having the animations in the first place.

+1 for the kiss principle, the fewer animations in game, the more processor power is saved the vehicle dynamics, which is what a driving sim is for in the first place.
