Overclocking and how
I got one question i get 25 fps max with all graphics low and i was wondering if i should overclock my pc

1.whats overclockin?

2.how do you overclock?

3.Pros cons of overclocking?

4.Sounds like overclock is like over reving an engine will it destroy or shorten life span of my computer?

Thx all!

First off, overclocking won't give you a magic FPS boost that will make LFS play and look great...

Secondly, before ANY of us can help you, we need to know the most we can about your system.

And lastly, overclocking (done right) won't really shorten the life of your components. The only two things that will are heat, and voltage.

wow thx alot for all this info here ill give u the best i can
ok where to start

HP Pavillion
Intel (R)
Pentium 4 processor
2.53Ghz
2.52Ghz
512mb of ram
Intel R 82845G/GL graphics contoller

thx 4 all ur help

also u said voltage...... will the pc blow up in my face if i do it wrong uh oh knowing im a klutz
i might set the house on fire as for the heat ill just buy a larger fan or two or three.....
Well from the "HP Pavillion" I can pretty much garantee you won't get great success with overclocking. Most companies either lock, or severly limit BIOS options (this has to do with the motherboard they use, not every motherboard has the option of overclocking)

I would start by reading up guides on the internet (sorry, none really come to mind right now) about the different terms, and definitions before actually getting into overclocking.

Be sure to get familiar with the terms: BIOS, FSB, mutliplyer, v-core, quad-pumped

Once you feel up the task, enter the BIOS (during startup, before operating system loading screen it will tell you what button to press) Browse around, get as much info as you can in terms of catagories, layout, and options. Post back here with your info

Yea, I honestly doubt that the components in your computer will be able to put up with much overclocking at all.

Since you don't seem to know too much, the basic issue with overclocking is heat. We could theoretically run all computers at 3423748623 Ghz, if we could cool them off sufficiently. Similarly to the way the Bugatti Veyron needs 10 radiators to run at 253 mph, you need a lot of cooling power when you overclock. You could overclock slightly, but that wouldn't get you much of a performance boost, and wouldn't be worth it. You could try overclocking a decent bit, but you're almost surely going to need an after-market cooler, or at least decent cooling and airflow in that PC to begin with (which I'm certain is not the case.)

Also, the components in the computer have to be able to handle the increase without crapping out. You can't take a Honda Civic engine and just put 4 turbos on it - you'll blow it apart. The processor would be fine, but your RAM would probably be the limiting factor. It would start generating errors as you pushed it harder.

If you really want to take a stab at it, there are some very useful guides online (for example, the overclocking forum at Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/forum-29.html). It's not TERRIBLY complicated if you understand what's going on, but there is a decent amount of stuff you need to know first.

Bottom line: I really don't think it would be worth the trouble on your particular system. If you really need better FPS, consider a physical upgrade
my dad wont let me buy anthing and my pc is now 7 yrs old so overclocking is my only choice and besides if i break my pc at least ill get a new better one and ill tell my dad i didnt do anything i checked wikipedia for overclocking

i understand about this stuff but my computer is locked i cant over clock but since its locked i can still use the front bus speed where can i alter the bus speed i cant find it in startup manuel

omg i changed some settings and as soon as my pc booted up it said cpu fan stopped service immediatley

i almost sh@t in my pants my dad would have killed me anyways i fixed it noo overclocking for me besides its locked i cant overclock ill just try to get a better graphix card
thx all!

Yeaaaa, may I suggest you not break your computer, lol, since I get the feeling you really don't know too much about what you're doing. Anyway, what is the reasoning behind why your dad will not get you a new computer? Even for basic productivity, your computer is surely a bit slow at this point.
Just a side note about stock coolers. I have a Celeron running at 2.6ghz and it loads at 40degrees (this is without any case fans, heatsink NEVER taken off) I was impressed, to say the least.
~Bryan~
Yea, it's not to say that all stock coolers do a bad job. But usually by the time a computer is as old as his, other factors come into play, such as dust on the heatsink, or CPU fans that are starting to show their age. But still, generally speaking, a manufacturer setup like that just doesn't lend itself well to cooling an overclocked system.

You'd need more voltage for that, and once you get to a certain point the CPU would burn out instantly thanks to electro-migration, ie when an overclocker was testing out an LN2 cooled Penryn, he ran them at ~5 GHz at 2v and 2 of the 3 burned out after a couple of minutes, even though they were loading under the -50° mark.

IMO if you don't know enough about your own PC to even say the specs of it without copy-pasting it from somewhere else, you probably shouldn't try to overclock.
Ask Harjun, he's pretty good at this stuff.

Wow.. That's very wise of you

U mean break a PC right?.. right?
Quote from rainspecialist :I got one question i get 25 fps max with all graphics low and i was wondering if i should overclock my pc

1.whats overclockin? Forces your CPU to run faster than intended

2.how do you overclock? Speed up the CPU in the BIOS (basically)

3.Pros cons of overclocking? Faster PC. Less stable, more heat, more energy consumption

4.Sounds like overclock is like over reving an engine will it destroy or shorten life span of my computer? Yes it might. Your analogy is okay. It's like over-revving an engine with cold oil

Thx all!

Simple.

Just trying to make it simple for the poor kid

oh yeh, hahaha, your soo funny...

chill guys!!

anyways i just got my wheel a madcatz wheel and im installing it now and also im not gonna overclock it because its locked and i cannot access the front bus so whatever

and also my dad wont buy me a computer because he thinks its pointless of me spending money on a new computer 1,200 when the one i have works fine (not for games or at least new ones) he says as long as internet and word proccesor are fine so is the computer

hmmmm maybe i should download a virus instead? lol search viruses on google!!

it is the front side bus, otherwise known as the FSB, your CPU will have a limit of the FSB, thus having a Multiplyer, like mine is set to 320X10, i found a comfortable stable FSB is 320, so i wanted 3.2Ghz, multiplying 320X10 giving 3200Mhz/3.2Ghz....there is a progamme called Clockgen where you can change all of that etc. but you use it within windows, but there is no point overclocking on a ready built computer, theres like, a restriction on everything. GOod luck of finding a "virus" on google.
Lol. Well, there's nothing much you can do then I guess short of sabotage - but at this stage, that would look fairly suspicious.

Just FYI though, if you built the computer yourself, it would only cost around $5-600 for a decent setup. Not $1200.
if you are talking £££, mine cost around £600, and runs all games fast enough than my eyes can see...if $$$, then i'm not really sure about that, that is around, £300 isn't it, so you could probably buy a 7600GTS, an E2180, 2gb RAM, 80Gb 16mb 7.2K RPM HDD for around that much which will on single player happily run LFS on high detail at around 150fps
Quote from harjun :oh sorry, i forgot, you think i would waste engaging my brain for a n**?

A what?

Harjun...you should of engaged your brain and not posted in this thread you will only make a bell shape of yourself.

To the OP: Make sure you read up on it plenty enough or atleast take in advice and wait till you know exactly what you are doing because it is a little dangerous and you could harjun your PC
you might harjun it, as in getting 3.2Ghz stable under 58Celcius load Max using speedfan logger, under load....if you dont want that, dont listen to me cause you'l;l get harjduned
Or you could overclock it after everyone tells your not to then make it semi combust then make a thread saying "my laptop went bang bangs" then try and sell it on the same board you just told it went bang then get your dad to buy you a nice PC just for you to say "shitty CPU" then overclock it then post about your PC in every thread...

Reconstruction:
OP: "How do I take screenshots in game"
Harjun: "Ctrl + S...Did I tell you about my PC?"
OP: Erm, no...?
Harjun: It has this this this this this and I overclocked it.
OP: Oh cos mine is better, sorry.
Harjun: Another one of my thread you ruined!
OP: But Its my thread...
Harjun: *pause* *head explodes*
OP: Oops?

Harjun: I'm sorry I'm a retard. I wont be back.

Harjun: I'm back.

Repeat.
Meh for $650 I just pieced together a:

P5K
E2180
8800GT
2GB Gskill something or other
320GB WD HDD
Coolermaster 600W PSU

Lose the GT and get a 7 series and a case for $600
