Troy Bayliss loses finger
Don't think anyone's mentioned this here. Saw the picture today in MCN and ouch! His pinky got grounded down to the knuckle and he wanted to ride in the second race The team and doctors wouldn't allow him for the fear of an infection.

The person who took the picture asked him if he was okay and Bayliss replied "Yea I'm alright." I found it sore enough nipping my finger on the airline release the other day, can't imagine what it must feel to grind half of one away on tarmac.

That guy must be as hard as nails! or the pain from hitting the lower regions on the fuel tank spread the pain out a bit
It's true that the more severe source of pain can 'block out' other sources of pain, but if his groin hurt more than a pinky grounded down to the knuckle... Holy shit.
Uhm... pics?
I think the reason he didnt feel his finger is this,in bold, taken from his website.

" My crash came from corner speed, it was more like a 125 highside. I already had a constant throttle and was rolling through the corner when the back came around and went into a massive chatter. I was so close to saving it when it came back, but coppice has a section that drops away and that sent me off, it was like a double whammy.

You may of noticed me holding my bits in the gravel trap, they got a whacking from the tank and the ripple strip. Very painfull. When I made it over the fence and sat down a kid asked me for my gloves. I whipped them off and to my surprise my pinky was hanging by a thread. I'm no expert but I knew it wouldn't be there for long. Luckily in Derby there was a very good hand Specialist unit and they trimmed it up. While I was under the urologist had some work to to do on my groin. You could say I split an Atom. Anyway all went well and now I just have to suffer for a while. "
Ouch is all I can say
I heard that it (his finger) got amputated due to the end of the handlebar crushing it beyond repair, rather than being "ground down" by the asphalt.

Either way, it was a nasty little incident.
afaik he got it amputated from the "middle joint"

knuckle - middle joint - top joint

I read that as well but Bayliss has stated he doesn't know how it happened. As he said above he didn't know until he took his glooves off.

Keiran
Yeah, OUCH!

I read about it in MCN.... looks bad, least thats all he lost i suppose
:/
Ouch, but the gloves don't save u from those injuries?

How do you expect a bit of fabric to protect you from around 50kg on your finger while traveling upwards of 50mph? Gloves are more for protecting against scratches, cuts and fire.

those gloves dont have metal or something for those accidents?!?!
Yeah, gloves and boots have no metal - this is to prevent your hands and feet getting shredded by sharp bits in a spill. They stopped making helmets out of metal years ago for that reason. The gloves are leather/synthetic, are fireproof and have those fat-arse polycarb knuckle protecting blobs on the back. Boots have similar toe-caps on the outside. They don't bend or tear into sharp bits like metal, they break clean or just get ground down.

Basically, in a bad crash it's better to grind off a finger or break a foot than have a piece of jagged metal cut your hand or foot in half (or off) or get lodged in there and need to have it surgically removed (so don't ride with your hip flask in your pocket ). Plus if you have to remove a boot from a mangled leg it's easier to cut through leather/fabric than to have to get out the tin snips.

Anyway, bummer for our boy Troy! Typical of him to want to run the next race though. "Bugger it. Gaffer it up and I'll see to it later." I'm shat I can't watch SBK without cable down here but I'm glad he's continuing the good relationship Ducati seems to have with Australians atm
#15 - Gunn
When asked what went wrong he said that he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

Can you not get the SBK website? It has great, extensive race coverage for less than £2.50 a round.
I know some people don't want to pay for watching their sports , but i don't think £2.50 is unreasonable for great race viewing. The quality of the stream is excellent too.

Yeah, I'm kinda "bah humbug" when it comes to paying for sports, especially since we had SBK for free when I started following it around '97/'98 (when Corser & Duke were pwning). They shifted it to FOX Sports once it had become required viewing in my house, the bastards. However my refusal to pay for SBK probably has more to do with me not wanting to give my money to Rupert "I'm a Yank now - for tax reasons" Murdoch, so I'll consider going straight to the source

I'd rather not give that piece of s**t any money as well.

What do we want ... F1, A1GP, Cricket World Cup, the premiership and Speedway on the protected list. When do we want it ... NOW!

He's destroying sport, he feeds dumbed down misinformation through Sky News and the Sun ...

No wonder speedvision is FWIH becoming NASCAR TV ...
Yikes :O
