Engaging chosen gear with a button press
Not sure if this is the correct section for this thread, but I can't think of a better one. I'd had a look through the readme file from V but I haven't found an answer to my question. I'd like to be able to bind a button on my wheel (DFP) so that when I press it a pre-selected gear is automatically engaged (e.g. I press the triangle button on my DFP and my car goes into 3rd gear). I don't know if this is possible through configuration options and/or the scripting system but I'd appreciate any help if it is. I'm using test patch V2.

Thanks in advance.
The only way I could think of is actually using the shifter option in LFS, but you'd then haffto push several awkward amounts of buttons.
Yep, set the gear shift mode to shifter, there you can assign the positions inside a H-shifter to certain gears, or use a different key on the keyboard for each gear.

You'll still need a button to clutch (assuming you don't have a pedal) to change gear reliably though, rev matching is very hard in LFS.

Note that you will have to have a button for every gear, you can't run a sequential/H-shifter combo setup.
Wouldn't that mean you have to hold the button down to stay in gear? I haven't tried this, but isn't it a case of having no gear input sticks the car in neutral?
Ah yes, good point. However, LFS tends to keep the car in gear if the button comes off, until you press the clutch. So it's doable, but hardly ideal.

With my G25 shifter, if it comes out of gear or I bump it or something silly, it comes out of gear into neutral with no clutch.
Hmm, doesn't usually for me. I suspect it might be linked to the loads on the gearbox.

Good call, I bet it is - as it should be!

Seems like more hassle than it's worth. Thanks for the suggestions though.
Aye, I think if you stay planted on the throttle, then nudge the shifter to neutral, the car stays in gear. When you get off the go pedal, the car drops to neutral.

Roll on FFB shifters!
I have an old non-force joystick that I've tried using for an h-shifter using joy2key.exe. It's quite a dodgy setup with an h-pattern and can tell you that using keypresses (simulated by the joystick position), it bumps in and out of gear/neutral even with your throttle planted as my joystick bumps back and forth where it should be giving keypresses.
