In french a car is female (une voiture), and I think I would call my car "her/she", I think it's just the way you pick it up.

Even if the word car it's "feminine" (Italian) in normal language it's a thing ,with a female word but still a thing; it wont be confused with a female person. Same for bike.
Now that i think truck, kart,steering wheel, tyre, engine, lights, etc. are all "masculine" words in Italian, car it's feminine; bah grammar...
For what i know in spanish it's "masculine" (el coche).

Mercedes is female too.

It's not always anything to do with what they look like. Naval destroyers, aircraft-carriers, etc etc are about the least feminine looking things on the planet, and yet all boats and ships are referred to as she. "You like this monstrous looking Oil tanker?", "oh yeah, she's a fine vessel alright".

Cars can be either, though, to me.

Cars are normally just an it to me, but I've been known to try and sweet talk it when I need that bit more speed..

I'd like to add the Peugeot 206 is a feminie car, as well as the Ford Ka. The MX5 is definately a girly car, because I barely fit in the damn thing!

Hmm, i doubt that.
Diablo it's not an italian word and it's more likely to be addressed as masculine (il diablo not la diablo); countach it's a slang italian words that means "wow" or "impressive" and you can refer to it as you want (no feminine or masculine).
However in italian car it's feminine so the correct way to say it's using feminine articles so it's "la diablo", "la countach", "la enzo", "la bmw" etc...

It's so obvious that I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet...
Conclusive proof that cars are feminine....

I find a Jaguar XKR pretty feminim actually. But maybe because it looks so refined
