Steam would be the best financial fix to LFS and with steam, I'm pretty sure that most of the pirate people that pirate LFS somehow, will buy the game through steam. Many people will buy the game and steam is really well at advertising the games and advertising the "new releases"
Steam will require an initial 100$ to create AppID, not sure about further payments but as far as I know, when and im sure it will soon when LFS reaches over 1,000$ income, whatever fees paid will be returned
