Quote from the_angry_angel :Personal preference, like I said I'm not trying to push it and I don't want to get into a debate on that (again ) I must admit the examples you've given can be infuriating, but fact of life is it happens.

About a year back Alan Cox (linux kernel) said that the current hardware DRM implementations aren't being as harsh as they could be, and were being used in UN computers to stop Windows being pirated and sold on the black market. An example of the atom bomb (sorry, I mean DRM) being used for a good thing. I certainly don't agree that it should be placed in every computer in the world, but getting rid of it completely is equally a bad move in certain circumstances.

Regardless, most coders and techies dislike DRM, so theres clearly something wrong with it.

Are you employed by Microsoft ?
Quote :What you americans call capitalism, I call GREED ! As simple as that

I dont see too many stars and stripes flags underneath names in this thread, but I do think it's a bit harsh to blame a country for a problem that has arisen out of what began with the concept of commerce and trade back in the middle ages.

It's true capitalism can be taken too far, and in some scenario's, Operating System software, pure capitalism just isn't working and monopolies commissions just dont have the teath to deal with it. The solution isn't to brand a single nation as greedy, if i'm not mistaken Denmark is also a country who's economics are based upon supply and demank capitalism.

Who said it was all about piracy? I'm not American either, perhaps you quoted my post by mistake?
Quote from alland44 :I`m feed up with this way of capitalism, and if that is what americans have to show the world, they can step down as "ruler of the world" because you have failed 100%

Nobody is forcing you to buy those copies of Windows. You did so out of your own free will. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Vote with your dollars. If enough people stop buying then things will change.

Read my previous 2 posts to put that one in context and you wouldnt have to ask that question. To put it simply, no. Unfortunately I am involved with deploying, maintaining and testing their abominations on a regular basis as part of my job. I deploy far fewer linux boxes than I'd like.

I will admit that it's ambigous to purely read that one post. I am very solidly against DRM, but what I am saying is that I can see the occasional very specific use for it.

It was the dx10, which lead me to the other part, about ultra capitalism
I`m not out to blame the ordinary american, but your way of capitalism is outta control

I hate when Nvidia or Ati comes up with a new Gfx too - This means money out of the pocket, soon.

Someone, somewhere, must be able to use what we have got now. It isn`t that bad

So no thx to dx10, if it means a new investment. And if Vista contains this dx10, no thx to that too.

I try !

It`s hard job, for a not native english speaking person, to keep up with all the postings. I should read them all, I know - But I have to eat and sleep to (And drive som Lfs !)

So forgive me if I miss out on some thing, sometimes. It`s not on purpose I guarantee.

Sorry, that did sound very harsh :o I really didn't mean it as it came out.

Kudos to sticking up for your beliefs man
Well, LFS definitly should not be in DX10, ever. S3 should be in opengl or DX9. And, for those games which require DX10, I'm just going to use QEMU.
WTF is Qemu?

The way I work now is that I buy music/software/games that I want. I buy these items because I want them and to support the makers so they make more.

If an item I want has un-fair restrictions/DRM then I do not purchase and I email the manufacturer and if possible the artist/designer etc and say they have lost a sale to DRM. With Sony I sent an email that I would NEVER buy another Sony product until they change their ways which is their loss as I was in the market for a 50" TV when the RootKit farce hit.

I write software for a living and I have see every piece of software I have release had keygens released for it within weeks of release. Even so I would never consider over the top restriction for any software I write and the latest piece will not even need registration codes. LFS has it right because it does not limit my use of the software, I can back it up and install where I like but can only use it from one PC at a time for online play. That is fair restrictions while systems like Starforce are not because they limit how I can interact with my PC hardware.

I am going to play with a new concept called trustware on my next product. This will be free download and will not require registration in any way. If the user likes the software I ask them to pay me what it is worth to them not what I feel it is worth. The users will be told that if they support me I will support them wwith updates otherwise I will kill off the product. Shareware showed there was a different way to sell products and this is just an extension on that.

There are other ways get get income instead of DRM you just have to make things people want in the first place If the music biz worked this out there would be no more Idol/Fame/Kit bad TV shows they would promote band that created music they believed in so they played the music from their heart.

There was a cafe I used to go to in Melbourne which applied the same philosophy. The food was good, so you felt like paying them a good price for your meal. As far as I know the cafe did pretty well. People respected the cafe's pricing philosophy and avoided the temptation of abusing their freedom to pay what they felt like paying.

The only good thing about Vista is that StarForce will not run on it
At least... Not using ring 0 access.
Quote from Becky Rose :WTF is Qemu?

Virtual machine technology, like Bochs, or VMware (at a stretch).

Qemu and games is a bad idea imho though. Yes it could be done, but using todays technology and seeing the "requirements" Vista has, not at a reasonable / good speed. Either way you'd still require a legal license.

I already installed windows XP in a fake hard drive partiton. It is REALLY slow in qemu. But, I couldn't get the kqemu (qemu accelerator) kernel module working. I don't see why someone can't just make a rpm.

It's really slow on "real hardware" too, so don't presume that the slowdown is caused by qemu.

Yep, one in London too and they found people would pay more than they would have priced their food at normally.

Quote from Becky Rose :I for one wont be buying Vista. I'll be praying either for a consumer backlash and removal of all of it's DRM components, or i'll fully migrate to OSX and keeping XP just for LFS. Vista and DX10 will never get to see my hard disk, unless the corporations make significant changes to what they are planning to do.

same here, i was going to buy a new gfx card (probably a 7600 or similar), but i have been told to wait for DX10 cards because DX10 wont work properly on a DX9 card and wont run on XP at all

wait a sec, so i have to wait to buy a more expensive card AND get Vista which i hate with a vengance (and yes, i have used Beta 2, and taken into acount its a beta) to play DX10? i dont want to buy Vista, and im not the only one, so M$ are FORCING me to get it

Whaaaaaa?

ill stick with XP, but when Vista comes ill probably just run Ubuntu, i would like to put Vista on an old pc just to learn about it (my dad runs a small IT company, he installed it so that he would have a headstart on the 20 million problems he will find with peoples PC's, and i would like to do the same), but alas i need 512 mb of memory JUST TO RUN THE FLAMING OS, somehow Vista is bloatware AND vaporware!!!!!!!!, and because of that the only pc i have that can run it is mine, and theire is no way its going on mine

/me hopes that Vista kills M$ and LFS works on linux

EDIT - sorry for the rant, i just get worked up with Microsoft

EDIT 2 - look, the only thing that looks bad in LFS is textures, so most are replaced, leaving just the anoying FE gravel to be lo-res, but i think S3 should go DX9, as i cant imagine that there are many people running an 8 card when S3 does come out
Jakg, at the top of your post your saying that you installed vista beta 2 to see what it was like then at the bottom your saying that your never going to put vista on your PC. contradiction or am I misunderstanding your post?

Back on topic: Was the reason for Direct X 8 in LFS was so that it reaches out to a large audience, and that if LFS were to be updated, It would lose quite a population of people that are running 'older' operating systems that only support DX8. Would I be right in saying that?

used, it is on my dads pc, which i do use just to see if i can learn to love Vista

i cant

EDIT - hmmm, i have just recieved a letter from PC Gamer asking if im missing their magazing

where do i email to tell them what i think of their "facts"?
Thanks for clearing up that misunderstanding

I think they used DX8 because that was what was available to the devs at the time..(?) I don't imagine that you would lose players through a DX9, or even DX10, update- provided you could offer backwards compatability to older DX's for older systems, like many games do today. The devs are very interested in maintaining as large an audience as possible- in the future, I can't think why they wouldn't include a DX8 option for players if they decided to go with DX9/10. More choice, catering to diverse systems, seems to be the best bet.
Why no DX10? For me it's simple. It would break compatability with Cedega. I was pretty chuffed when I got LFS working under Linux, and I do not want that to go. I am actually considering getting rid of Windows altogether, and any implementation of DX10 into LFS would mean I would HAVE to install Vista, which (as I'm sure many others will agree) might not be the best option.
It would be interesting to hear what Scawen and Eric are thinking about all this...
