WRC switching to S2000-spec car for 2010 season
They just got rid of Loeb then, so now the WRC will have boring cars and no talented drivers.
I actually think this will be a good thing - A shake up with unexpected results. Much better than the predictable Loeb Loeb Loeb Loeb Loeb Loeb Loeb Loeb Citreon Citreon Citreon Citreon Citreon Citreon way of life I've became used to while watching WRC recently.

Once you start only watching a sport because of one person/team wins then it's damn time to a change. I wonder how this'll go
If the engines are the same, what would be the big difference?

same, I cant stand the guy, back in 07 at least ther was Gronholme who could take him on, this year has been incredibly dull (all bay subaru's new entry)
What!? You can't hate a guy because he is amazingly talented. That just suggests jealousy. Hirvonen can give him a run for his money anyway. Seeing as he is vastly less experienced than Loeb and still finishes ahead of him in some rallies.
I think it's the death of rally as it is. Those powerless fwds is not rally car should be. I understand the reasons why they didn't make it rwd series only but fwd and non-turbo low hp engines...not interested at all. What makes a rally car is extremely good acceleration and four wheel drive imho, and these allow the cars to be driven sideways which is what makes rallying what it is. Extremely fast, daring and the cars even look that they are going fast. I don't care about some S2000 rallycars which will most probably be a tad quicker than some Junior World Rally Championship rally cars. And probably will be slower at tarmac.

I really really really hope that this opens the window for rallycross to rise back to the nr.1 offroad motorsport which it should be. Cars that have power and races that look like business. I say RIP rally, welcome rallycross!

Considering rallying doesn't have car on car action (99% of the time) I can't see how one guy being dominant can be THAT boring. You only see one car at a time anyway so it doesn't matter who wins in terms of sceptical.

S2000 allows AWD for rally cars (according to Wikipedia). Still bloody depressing though.

Yes because the only way you can get excitement in racing is by having 20 monkeys, on a paved circuit, all trying to occupy the same point in space. Maybe you should let the FIA know so they don't waste any more money on this rallying malarkey?
I think it is an important change, the current cars are far too expensive, if manufacturers are struggling to afford works teams then there is little hope for the WRC. Personally I would have rathered rules allowing Group B style homolgation specials with the only real requirements being 2WD and low capacity naturally aspirated (but otherwise totally free engines). Modern rally cars are boring to watch but extremely fast at the same time, there has to be a move towards historic (and even Group B to an extent) rally cars with limited traction, more than enough power and no computers meaning the result is spectacular cars making lots of noise and pleasing crowds whilst not traveling very fast.

Of course it does rallying is a competitive event and the WRC should be the equal to F1 as the pinnacle of major motorsport disciplines, they're not demonstration runs.

As well as killing crowds

But I totally agree with you.

If you're standing a place where a rally car is likely to hit you, it's probably just as well you leave the gene-pool. That's why it's crucial to the very survival of mankind that we bring back Group B and leave the idiots to pile up along the stages like they used to.
Main problem with WRC (after Loeb's scruffy facial hair) is lack of manufacturers which means lack of competitive cars.

If S2000 does not bring more manufacturers then rules have failed.

FWD? Major misunderstanding there. As far as I've understood, the cars would not be exactly S2000 cars but based on them with some sort of "bolt on WRC kit" that adds turbos and some aero bits. These "S2000 WRC" cars will not be allowed to participate anywhere else, according to FIA which is stupid competition wise and artificially exclusive...

Technically it's a degrade from current WRCs but these new cars should have a lot less electronics (e.g. diffs and no paddle shifting) which might make rally cars go sideways again.

They should be RWD cars so at least there's sideways action a plenty, like the days of Datsun 1600's and 180B SSS and Escorts.

Golden days of rallying..

All S2000 cars are AWD with no turbo, but to compete in WRC in 2010 they will be equipped with small turbo and some other aero things - they say it should have about 50 HP more than the "standard" S2000 at the moment (so that is ~260+50 HP). If this brings more manufacturers into WRC, then I think it`s not a bad thing.
Exactly how cheap is S2000spec compared to group N?
Don't understand why they need to make the engines less powerful, is it that expensive to have that old 300 the WRC cars now have? I'm all for more simpler and cheaper technology, but do they have to slow the cars down that much.

no, my point was that rallying's excitement doesn't require car to car 'racing' so if one person always wins it still doesn't take away any of the sceptical. I didn't say it wasn't exciting, just that it's excitement isn't dependant on who wins.
Needs a bit of blur
