I work for an insurance company and statistically women cause more claims than men, however around a 1/3 with no one else involved, but regardless the claims caused by men especially young are considerably worse landing us in the s**t for premiums.

And the main causes of accidents on the roads are 'elderly people' but at what age the company I work for defines that I don't know (we follow Zurich rules since they are our main underwriter). Elderly people unfortunately are not only responsible for a very high number of extremely bad accidents but also responsible for a high amount of petty whiplash claims which we usually have to payout on.

Also we also don't insure taxi drivers, what does that tell you?

Pretty much we can generalise about many breeds of drivers, at the end of the day it's unfair to tag any of them as bad drivers even if it is backed through statistics.

Ok so basically I have some decent speakers; Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 (for PC speakers anyway)...and I purchased recently some Grado sr60i headphones which sound fantastic, very impressed.

I was really planning on using the speakers during the day and headphones really for 10PM onwards when everyone else in my house is fast asleep, however I've started using the headphones alot more.

I should really just say simply how can I get good headphone sound from my PC but I feel a justification needs to be there. In the computer at the moment is the Creative X-Fi xtrememusic, but I used to have a fatality pro which I replaced because it become faulty but can will easily say they both sound pretty much the same through the headphones anyway. On the sound output I use completely neutral settings which may be a reason why, so I turn the x-fi function off, the equalizer, and the EAX/3D effects are only enabled for gaming but I mostly listen to music anyway.

Testing the headphones on the hifi gear downstairs, albiet 10 years old now and only Pioneer they still sounded alot better but why...? I can't put into words other than it was a more relaxing listen even though right now I'm listening to the same CD through the computer for testing reasons. The sound seems more 'forced' than it was through the hifi's cd-player headphone out? I really cannot put it into words, and it's mainly because the difference was subtle but to me noticeable.

So really I would like advise, I usually buy equipment thats 'good bang for buck', I'm not sure exactly what needs to be purchased for the computer...a better soundcard? a headphone amp? both?

Advice appreciated anyway.

Quote from Stefani24 :I thought it was everywhere like that.
(Except that we still use PS/BHP)

The UK insures not only the car but the drivers to drive it. If I have a full license I can't drive my step dad's car because he'd need to name me on the policy specifically.

And the premiums are based on in an outline:

-the area you live in
-not just the power of the car but if its a saloon or a sporty looking vehicle for instance...people carriers are more expensive to insure because they average 7 seats over the usual 5. Insurance group is only a recommended grouping over here, insurers can choose their own.
-modifications to the car (as it links you to a racer stereotype, but also affects the value of the car and repair costs)
-the value of the car and part availability
-what your using the car for and your predicted yearly mileage
-Your age, occupation, sex...even your marital status...infact even if you're a homeowner (yes...its more expensive to insure males)

Like modern warfare 2, its all good marketing. Don't get me wrong the game is good but the hype will die a month after release because it isn't that good.

Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad though should hopefully be out this year, which will be 'that' good .

Its erm....kinda dissapointing. I've only played on the beta version of my brothers but I was hoping it would feel abit different from the other battlefields.

The graphics aren't as good as I expected either, it seems to be just revamped from BF2142, with better shadows and destructable environments, with slightly better detail. I was also surprised at not being able to prone?

It's fun but I think they tried too hard, and certainly not worth the massive hype over in my opinion.

Quote from Niels Heusinkveld :No there isn't a huge difference. You're probably overrating your ears. A proper blind test and oops.. where has that big difference gone? You're highly unlikely to be any different from the usual ears, you will probably not notice the difference!

Many have been CONVINCED mp3 sucked only until the point they couldn't distinguish it.. Then most continued to be convinced and pulled out all sorts of conspiracy theories in order to justify their spending of silly amounts of money on mostly useless audio equipment..

When I encode to MP3 using whatever Winamp uses, I encode 192kbps...I haven't tried 128kbps to be honest but mp3s always seem 'flat' compared to encoding as flac...maybe it's the encoder?

I just watched a short clip on BBC news with Stephen Fry regarding this and he more so focused on the fact the Apple online store will now offer books to challenge the Amazon and Sony e-reader, but again...I found you could get an app and do this on the itouch/iphone anyway, but it won't beat the e-readers because of the screen technology used in the readers to imitate paper.

Quote from RevengeR :I'd still say if you want proper PC speakers buy a used promedia or promedia ultra, good stuff Mine is in her 8th year, and still sounds tight and clear, and hopefully will do so for the next 8 years as well. knock-knock-knock.

I looked at the Klipsch range but they weren't as widely available as Acoustic Energy within the UK, and the reviews we're as strong as the set I got anyway. They were definitely on my shortlist though.

Quote from Niels Heusinkveld :Any audio discussion tread where Watts are used more than once is probably a bad one. Power says nothing about sound volume, and even if it did, sound volume is quickly a lot louder than you'd ever play anyway!

On moderatly efficient speakers you don't need any more than 10W of power to blow your eardrums.

Efficiency is the sound pressure you get with one watt of power. You need 2x this power to get 3dB more noise. If you for some reason need 500W of power, that means the speaker units themselves are not efficient. This isn't ''bad'', efficiency is just a number reflecting how loud it will play, not how good..

This is precisely correct, I mean...I never went off watts when I bought my system, because even something with small watts will go loud enough. I wanted precision in sound reproduction which again wasn't exactly found in the technical specifications...the closest I got was frequencies in that sense but the only thing I could go off mainly was reviews, since the set has a built in amp that can obviously also emphasize certain frequencies such as bass or treble...I wanted as balanced as possible.

Ahh sorry power cables, yea power cables are most likely a myth. I did however notice my speaker set hissed lightly when there was nothing playing but they were turned on, through investigating it, it was the surge protection on my extension thing so I got a non-surge protected one and it didn't hiss no more. I know its not related to the kettle lead, but its still something to do with power. I reckon a power cable will make a difference on like...£20,000+ systems but its something to easily overlook I guess.

Quote from Jakg :HDMI cables over a short run = all the same.

Power cables make no difference to sound quality, and even if it did the idea a £300 power cable can boost the SQ on a £500 amp is ridiculous (because I somehow doubt they spent £300 on the power circuitry on the inside of the amp...)

I read it at work when i'm bored but it honestly seems like they are a bunch of snobs, they may well have "well trained ears" but it just seems like the higher margin cables can deliver high margin bribes...

Cables put simply are more expensive because of materials/manufacturing process/development...for example pure copper or well made shielding...I don't think its fair to judge the accuracy on how they review just on cables alone.

HDMI cables I agree, as a digital signal will not fluctuate so dramatically, but in regards to speaker cables it can make quite a difference but only to an audiophile.

No problem mate I would know if I was paying for the name really, I spent alot of time looking at reviews before buying. I'd never heard of Acoustic Energy beforehand, 'whathifi' rated them 5 stars and this is a reputable hifi magazine and comes with good reviews.

One of the UK's specialities is making good speakers, you'll find, and each hifi company has a reputation to make good products.

I can hardly see Genius making an amazing sound product, but at the same time this is only my opinion, as their research and development will go into other products at the same time. The speakers might sound good, but they are more focused for the average PC user who likes 'boomy' bass. Even quoted from the website you linked:

Quote :For a surprising booming effect, SW-HF2.1 2000 has a 5.25” unit in the bottom of the subwoofer for a lower and deeper bass sound responding from the ground up

While the subwoofer with my speakers can go loud (there are 3 level settings, I have it one 1)...the bass is precise and controlled. I can hear the bass properly rather than the rumbling mess of my last Logitech speakers which if you love your music is very much appreciated. I can make the bass go loud though on the level settings but it doesn't 'boom'.

Genius do alot of products all fairly well priced, I cannot comment on how your speakers are but mine are made by a company specific to HiFi solutions which I would now trust alot more for the sound quality than a company that sells a broad range, such as mice, keyboards, controllers...

Acoustic Energy do speakers that go upwards of £5,000, so £122 for a full system by them is a rather good deal.

Quote from Crashgate3 :So as long as any car I look at has a comprehensive service history, isn't rusty, doesn't sound odd, drives ok, and all the electrical items work, it should be good to go? I'm not going to hand over cash, get 200 yards down the road, and have all the doors, body-panels and wheels fall off, leaving me just sitting on the chassis holding a steering wheel and looking shocked?

In life you have to take risks, obviously there are ways of reducing that risk which you've detailed above. The main one would be service history, just so you know the history of this car, however other than a visual inspection and your basic checks you're going to have to rely on gut instinct.

Make sure to leave some money in the bank for safe measure too, but thats common sense really.

On high mileage cars I would ask how frequently the oil is changed and inspect rusting around joints/bolts (etc) the best you can. Don't let the 'just been washed and cleaned so I look almost new' thing fool you.

Quote from hrtburnout :Spacedskunk, what does you audiophile uncle think of your new speakers?

Well I had the speakers delivered to his house since he was off work and offered, which is why I got them when I did. I told him to test them when they arrived if they didn't look to be too awkwardly packaged.

He said before I looked at them the speakers are very small but very good, he is going to buy some infact and this is a guy that spent £600 on his Amplifier, and even £280 on an Amplifier specific for headphones :S

Quote from matijapkc :You bought metal speakers? I also got an uncle, which isn't audiophile, he's in all technology, and he knows a LOT about all that stuff. And I would NEVER go for metal speakers. It was his advice, and I'm thankfull to him for it. Buy speakers made of wood. And what's the power of your's speakers? EDIT: Found it... 80W

PS: I have Genius SW-HF 2,1 2000. Pic:http://www.bug.hr/_cache/0c16d ... 79995db4d0b4c688e803a.jpg RMS 60W All other information on this page: http://www.geniusnet.com/geniu ... e&test=portlet-action

PS2: Almost forgot... (again) Here's an video filmed by ME. My subwoofer. Not even on 45%. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1110063344147 If you can't see it, I'll upload to youtube. If you look at it very carefully, you'll see dust particles flying all over.

EDIT: Forgot to say... I'm actually more then impressed with the difference between these ones, and the old ones... They have lots of basses (can be adjusted directly on speaker). Sound don't lose quality even on 50% volume (haven't tried more, I would lose my ears).

Sorry for spelling if there's any errors.

There are differences over wood/metal bodied speakers, but for speakers as small as my system I don't think wood will have worked as well. If they were bigger...yes. Still though, some very expensive speakers out there are made of metal...it's just there a few ways each material can help reproduce sound, with metal it can help emphasize the high notes, but you are going into serious audiophile stuff.

30w speakers eating z5500's for breakfast?
Link these speakers your talking about.

Possibly meaning blow out of the water in terms of sound quality. I mean the Acoustic Energy Aego M has an RMS of 80W which I can only compare to the Z2300's 200W (since its 2.1 also), I accept the Logitechs will go louder in decibel terms but I can only put the volume up on my system to 30% and its very loud for this average sized room.

I've taken a picture of a speaker in relation to my iPod classic so you can see the size (attached, bad image because crap phone). When they are very loud, they retain that same quality. I haven't tried past halfway...because unless its a party or something you just wouldn't have it at halfway. The ranges from highs, meds and lows are very clear, responsive and crisp. I like to listen to music how it was intended to be listening to so I disable equalisers etc whereas my last speakers sounded dull when I did so I had to tweak them so the bass was lower and the highs were highers.

I watched a film yesterday and also played abit of CSS and again, its very good. The soundstage they create is amazing, and because they are so small they can be placed quite far apart for an even bigger stage.
