Bah, the whole Racers vs Drifters war is really gay.
Firstly i'd like to say, what drift specific features ARE implemented into LFS? None as far as i'm aware...
So asking for something like a tyre isn't really asking for a cure to cancer. (That's not in any way to patronise the Devs. Just saying it's not as though the drifters are asking for the game to be renamed to Live For Drift!)
As far as the mountain tracks are concerned, who says they can't be raced on? Whether your car is sideways or straight, it's beside the point. A mountain track is a great way to race regardless of the style in which you race it.
This IS the thread for cold tyre smoke production!
That's a good way of putting it actually.
I don't really think it's too necessary for there to be MORE smoke, because as you can see when you're tyres are red, there's plenty of smoke. Just not enough/any when your tyres are cold.
This is the reason i made the suggestion in the other thread about drifting tyres. If the drifters had an optional "drift tyre" to chose from, which produced more/coloured smoke then regular tyres, then it would allow the grippers to go about their daily business and not be concerned with 10fps start line launches as everyone spins their wheels at the start of a race, etc etc.
I know i'm far from the best drifter in LFS but i never asked for anything that helps me drift better.
What i'd like to see is more smoke produced quicker. Some coloured smoke woul also be a cool looking option to have. I very briefly mentioned the possibility of longer lasting tyres. I also said when i mentioned it that longer lasting tyres could detract from the realism but questioned whether or not that was a positive or negative thing to implement into the racing simulator.
I'm with you and the other dude, i don't want anything that makes drifting easier. That's where the fun is, in the challenge of controlling the car.
Great post. Sheds a bit of true light on the situation.
I just generally see a lot of racers coming in and shooting their mouths off just because they prefer racing to drifting. Fair enough if the devs started making stuff for drifting and neglecting the racing improvements, but i really can't see that happening. The devs know the score, they know what's going on and this whole section is just for them to see what the people want. If they only see 5 people posting requests for something drift related, and they see 35 people posting requests for something race related, then sure, they're gunna pay more attention to the race thread. Just more reason for the racers to not go postal whenever someone requests something drift related. It's ok, we drifters know we come second, i'm ok with that. Hopefully eventually we'll get some added features for our style of racing too, after the racers have got everything they want/need.
What i'm ultimately getting down to is; there is a minority group of LFS players who enjoy drifting. I'd like to see this community grow so we have more people to drift with. Finally, a racing simulator that is accurate enough to properly drift on! This is great! It would be nice if people stopping playing black man/white man and have fun with what they like doing and leave whatever they don't like doing to everyone else. Just because it's a "racing" simulator, doesn't mean you can't take full benefit of the fantastic physics and do other things with the game also.
I don't know if it's possible, but perhaps it might kill 2 birds with 1 stone by incorporating these "drift tyres" to produce faster/more smoke AND perhaps coloured smoke for that added spectacle. With the option of "drift tyres", the racers can still have their normal tyres, but the drifters can have better smoke simulation and perhaps the tyres could last longer? Perhaps that detracts from realism, but is it a negative on the whole? or is it a positive?
By the way, i'd just like to add;
It's quite prevalent around here that some "Racers" hate "Drifters". Can you get over it? This suggested improvement imposes NOTHING on the racers so long as they chose not to involve themselves in it. If you don't want "drift tyres" then don't select them in the garage. Yes, there are 1000 other important things that should be done first, but this is an Improvement Suggestion forum for those who want something to voice their suggestions... not a place of opportunity for you to cry about something you don't like, which is not constructive in any way, shape or form.
Nah, there isn't any point to the cars backfiring in the game, it's just an aesthetically pleasing contribution to realism. Theres 1000 things that are more important, but if it's an easy thing to do, then i think there are a few LFS players out there who would find this kinda thing really appealing.
Yeah it's all about the visual aspect. It looks 10x better when there's actually smoke coming from the car whilst you're drifting. When you've got a spare 100mb, download 'feint' in the movies section and you'll see what i mean
Android, if the problem was that i wanted more smoke, then i've already got that covered because i have smokemod (check the screenshot i posted ) but the problem isn't more smoke required, it's faster/instant production of smoke that i would love to see.
I did a bit of a search and came across a few threads that have people asking for "more smoke" but that's not quite what this is about.
Being a bit of a drift lover, i quite often get out on the track and throw the ass end of my car around. One unfortunate thing is that the smoke doesn't appear until the tyres are red.
I've attached a demo below of me drifting till my tyres pop and as you can see, the smoke starts pouring out once the tyres are red. Problem being that by the time the good stuff happens (the smoke), the tyres are dead.
My suggestion to improve would be:
"DUST/SMOKE LOD" on maximum, enables instant smoke as though they tyres were red, and perhaps a hell of a lot more smoke once they are warmed up too. This gives the people with high-end PC's the enjoyment of nice thick, realistic smoke. Basically as soon as you start spinning your cold tyres, the smoke starts bellowing as it does IRL, and for added effect, once the tyres are really cooked, the smoke just becomes rediculous, allowing for some nice burnout shots. -> http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/1582/burnout5qj.jpg
Plus with the option of turning down the "DUST/SMOKE LOD" it gives the low end PC users the ability to play the game at a decent frame rate.
Sure, when you change your exhaust you will notice the backfire. But i think what Tristan's point was (correct me if i'm wrong Tristan) that in changing the exhaust, you are also putting the car under the same category of those that would "fail the emissions test". i.e; if it pops, then it fails emissions.
That being said, you don't need to remove a cat converter to make your exhaust pop, all my cars with aftermarket exhausts have popped on decel.
But this is all a little off topic. I personally like the idea of backfiring in LFS, but only on decel, and only from GTR type vehicles and possibly the option to turn it on/off in the options.
If you can't notice the difference, my card blurs the lines on the road and looks like crap. The other guys card puts out a much nicer result. I have the latest drivers.
