would it be possibly to store old pbs for posterity before deleting them?

possibly if all the pbs were kept, and then overwritten as each combo was raced for the first time on patch T?

yes you are right.

but when this happens continuously, there is something seriously wrong.

and when you are used to near instantaneous connections and flawless LFS netcode, then it gets really frustrating.

seeing as this thread has revived...

i just want to clarify if anything has changed with the new patch? i dont see it on Scawens list anyway.

also, an XRT set i was given still had a locked diff, so i assume things are the same.

are the lift-off oversteer problems less noticable now with the improved trye physics?

my problem sounds very similar. but is probably for a totally different reason.

atm, i have concluded that my line is just crap for now. read my thread and if your symptoms are the same.

2. We get about 2 or 3 updates per year. Do we really need an autoupdate feature just for that?

well you wouldn't think you would...but, while i was bug checking tonight, i tried going back to version P, and there are still plenty of servers/racers using patch P. surely it wouldn't be too hard to code a little message that prompts them with the option to upgrade when they request a server list.

try and give a clearer explanation of your problem. otherwise people dont understand you and cant help.

Another update.

After using Pingplotter (awesome tool! thanks again Ed! ) I can see that I am getting intermittent packet losses. almost anywhere, and even on my exchange.

It would seem my ISP (TalkTalk) currently have a crap network, or are upgrading, so I am currently out of LFS action

now i have tried ALL permutations! illepall

i tried an old patch (thanks Ed) and got the same results.

i also tried Doom3, which worked perfectly.

any difference between the packets for LFS and Doom3?

doom3 pings seemed pretty slow as well though.

however, i am coming to the conclusion that it is a dodgy line atm, possible to do with exchange upgrades that are happening in UK (dsl max i think). LFS seems to be particularly sensitive to it anyway. and it had to be now..........

after numerous tests and different permutations, i am down to considering it being my outside line or the patch. more likely the line. i will try another game right now to verify this.

i have tried numerous server, and generally all my pings are now worse.
i will keep trying, and also maybe try something like Q3 or HL2 to test my connection.
Patch creating poor connections??? [SOLVED] it was ISP (Talktalk)

SEE MY FINAL POST #27

Now this maybe completely coincidental, but since installing the new patch I have had nothing but grief when trying to play online.

Constant disconnects from servers, at seemingly random intervals as well as trouble connecting to the servers in the first instance. Even refreshing the server list is not a tedious ordeal compared to before. Before the patch, I would regularly have 44ms pings to most servers, and could stay connected all night. However, now I have 80ms pings minimum and the server list takes ages.

Now I thought it must be my side creating the problems, but after spending all yesterday trying to find a problem, I am still scratching my head.

The only period of long connection time I had was from midnight last night until about 3am However, having tried again today to race at ‘normal’ hours I discovered that the problem remains.

Now, I still think it is probably a problem at my end, and I will run a test later to see what it is like from another system, but I would like to hear what other people think. Possibly even if the devs have changed any of the NET code?

Just 10mins ago, I connected up again, only to find it slow. When I eventually got onto a server, a few people said they had been experiencing similar problems since the patch. So is it possibly anything to do with the patch, or just me and a few others?

My connection is a 1Mb/256Kb ADSL line from TalkTalk (UK). Previously it has been perfectly reliable, and even now after running speed tests, I get good results. I even downloaded the whole new S2 to see if that would solve my problem, but it came down at a constant rate of 100Kb +. So where does the problem lie?

I am running a Netgear Firewall/Router DG834 on which I have just updated the firmware in an effort to fix this problem.

Any suggestions or tests I can run would be greatly appreciated. I used Dan Elwells speed test btw.

Thanks

edit: I just ran another speedtest, and it showed some levels of packet loss(4% and 16%), is this normal?

I am leaning towards thinking it might be packet loss, as download speeds are relatively ok, but pings are higher than normal. Also, contention ratio should not be a problem as I stay in a smallish village and have never had such issues before.

I am in the same boat as you Fordie

I have just switched to in-cockpit view and it does take a little getting used to. However, what I miss in accuracy on the corners, I think I make up in feedback from seeing the car movements. The subtle movements of the car give alot of feedback that you don't really get in bumper-cam. So far it hasn't slowed me down, but I am maybe slightly less-consistant at the moment. IMO, the blindspots are the biggest killer with this view! ATM I am toying with using ALL mirrors as if you just use 'real' mirrors, sometimes they are cut off in the wider cars (i.e. GTRs) compared to the narrower cars (LX4).

I would like an option to switch off real mirrors but keep the virtual mirror.

Anyway, as for the FREX stuff, I have also looked at it, but from what I recall the MOMO doesn't seem to be supported for the wheel upgrade

Quote from deggis :On public servers it's not very used track because KY GP is too long and too hard. And the oval section is boring.

IMO KY GP is only hard because of the low grip bugs. In GTR cars it is great fun flying round the corners there, sweeping from one side of the track to the other. The only problems i have are at the tight right hander after the start straights and at the final hairpin/chicane which is just killer atm with low speed bug

I'm sure with the patch that some of these hard tracks will soon become alot more forgiving and fun!

@CP: As for the sound, I have to agree. TBH I don't find it too annoying, but the one thing that gets me sometimes is the turbo whine I don't think we would see it with this patch or anytime soon, but an interim compatible patch in the future would be great. I'm sure it would keep things ticking over nicely and would keep alot of people happy....in 6 months time :faint:

@Qurpiz: That KY track is awesome! :dribbles:

I've always liked your skins too. Can't let those goto waste

didn't you know dSRC is slowly killing off all the opposition and poaching the drivers

we are becoming an unstopable behemoth of a driving fury!

join the bright side!

sorry to hear about team_nic dying off.....

were we the last team to race you guys?

Wikipedia is usually pretty good for that sort of stuff if you haven't looked there yet.

Quote from Bob Smith :Boooo! CRT forever!

I used to think that too, until my last one died and my replacement was cheap and nasty (my fault anyway)

I know CRT is still the best in terms of quality (i think) but IMO the differences of mid-range CRTs and TFTs is negligible to the vast majority of users.
For me, the space saving and size of a large TFT compared to a monster CRT tips the balance towards TFT.

I had a thought about the grip levels in LFS, e.g. when people say it feels like driving on ice.

I know the heating patterns and other aspects of the tyres in LFS are incomplete, but I am talking specifically about basic grip levels here (even although they are all related :schwitz

BUT, it is a big BUT, what if the grip levels are also do to with the track surface in LFS? I assume that Scawen assigns a friction value to the track/surface so that there is a difference between grass/tarmac/gravel, so what if the level of grip on the track is just too low?

I know this can probably be answered or negated pretty quickly, but of course it is one of the factors involved in the grip levels. Anyway, it was just a thought

That is my Samsung 913N^^^^

I haven't checked to see the difference between it and the 930BF, but it is cheaper and has much the same stats.

8ms compared to 4ms and the DVI connection are the only differences I see at a glance. From what I have heard DVI gives a minor improvement. As for the 4ms......obviously it it quicker, but I haven't noticed an ounce of ghosting anyway.

I have a Samsung monitor with alomost identical specs, and I can say thay I am very pleased with it. I doubt I will go back to CRT now

Mine is a Samsung SyncMaster913N 19"TFT which also has 8ms and 1280*1024 resolution.

My favourite feature on it is the 'MagicTune' which aligns the visible picture to the size of you monitor Very handy, and no more messing about with control panels and knobs.

I got it from Ebuyer I think, and i'm guessing it is similar to the one Tristan gave you a link too, although mine was cheaper (and possibly an older model).

Quote from filur :No, if you're speculating about taking some kind of legal action towards these users, the only thing that would ever be worthwhile would be if anyone was actually selling cracked copies of lfs.

Well, in my book, by not purchasing the S2 license they are effectively stealing the content.

I know some people take a light approach to cracking, and I for one certainly used to so that I could play without CDs from a mate's copy of a game or something, but in this case the devs have such a unique and small scale business approach that I think they deserve all the support they can get.
