Quote from neilmichaelcasey :Hi there - That looks like sweet setup m8. Got a couple a question if i may!

1. Any Eyestrain at all?

No

2. How much are the glasses & are they comfortable?

5 pounds and yes

3. How much are the polarised filters & do you use 2 identical filters but rotated?

Can't remember exactly how much they were as I ordered them with the screen and glasses from:

http://www.silverfabric.com/

No, there are two different filters

4. How much is polarised screen?

The whole lot cost me around 500 euros from silverfabric in Germany

5. Is there a special paint you can get to paint your wall (to save price on screen?)

I did read of such a paint on www.stereo3d.com forum

6. How do you adjust the actual 3d bit (ie more depth/less depth - infront of screen/behind screen)

Ctrl F3, F4, F5, F6 via nvidia stereo driver. it's fun to play around with. nvidia have a great test screen for it with a spinning logo that comes right out into the middle of the room...kids love trying to grab it!

7. What Video card you using & how much r they?

nvidia 7800 GTX. not sure of price now.

8. If jimmy took 3 qpples & 7 oranges to London at 2mph for 3 miles & 3.7mph for the rest - from swansea how long would it take to need new shoes?

Peace & seriously - Im Jealous & we all need abit of warm jelousy some times!

Oh and 1 last question - can you have the 3d half infront & half behind the screen or is the screen where it starts?

Yes you can! and this is the best bit! My cockpit is infront of the screen and the track and other cars are behind. The screen itself is not really noticeable.

Quote from thisnameistaken :So what's the life expectancy of those projectors? What are the bulbs rated for and how expensive are replacements? What sort of a warranty did they give you?

Yes I am still interested. God I'm pathetic.

They reckon the bulbs last for 2000 hours. I forgot to ask about replacement cost. I guess it'll be some time before I need to worry about that. I think it's a 3 year warranty.

I chose this one for its wide throw ratio, wide screen format, high res and adjustable lens.

They gave me a discount for buying 2.

Do you plan to triple it ? OK I am off...

Hmm... I'd need 6 projectors...my room is not big enough for the three screens!...now if I could just knock through that wall......

Quote from thisnameistaken :Bloody hell they're expensive.

You had me all hyped up to go crazy with the gaming rig until I saw the price.

But the great thing about the polarized system is that you can use any projectors - including the £200 ones off ebay.

Ok....I'll admit my gaming rig cost more than my car...but I've done more miles on LFS than I have in my P reg 205! I find It's just a case of getting your priorities right.......

I tried this one at inition in London. It's basically a modified X2 running at 600 by 800. the only difference is that it has a much higher refresh rate so it can be used with shutter glasses without noticeable flicker. For less money you can get two XGA projectors, the non-depolarizing screen, the filters and glasses. I made my choice!

Quote from Vain :At which resolution do the projectors run?
(-> price class)

Vain

My projectors are wide screen ones running at something like 1200 by 720
It's still pretty good with 600 x 800 though. I'd swap resolution for depth any day.

Yes, anybody can use red/cyan glasses with the nvidia stereo drivers. It should be noted that you need to install the video driver and then the stereo driver and both need to be the same release number. At the moment this means you can't use the very latest video driver. Better still is to use a crt monitor and a pair of shutter glasses. Then you don't lose the colours. www.stereo3d.com is a very good resource for info about this.

wow! just came back to this thread. It's amazing how ignorant one can be...without realising it . Just 'remove the barriers'. I bet Scawen has a good laugh at posts like this!

I bought projectors with an in built image positioning feature so it is quite easy to align the two images. It's also possible to make a rig to hold two non adjustable projectors. Interestingly, it's not essential to have them perfectly alligned as the brain aligns the images received from each eye anyway. (aren't we amazing creatures?) Track side objects such as spectators are noticeably flat, but to me they are in the 2d view aswell. Here are a couple of images. One showing the hole I made in my wall to seat the projectors (I have an understanding wife!) and the other showing how the view looks without the glasses on.

No, I didn't use the inbuilt tracker, I also used the trackIR. I stuck the vector clip onto the z800. I'd love to try the G25 too but after buying the two projectors, my money box is a bit low!

I've tried the emagin z800 and have to say that it's really good. The thing you don't get however is the wide field of view that you can have with the projection setup. 2 projectors is not as expensive as you might think - just look on ebay. The cost is bumped up though by the non-depolarizing screen and the filters and glasses.....but it's worth it!
Want to try Stereo 3D?

Hi all,

I keep reading about the latest wheel or high end graphics card but nobody seems to take any notice of the fact that their racing is missing an entire dimension! I know some of you will have heard my banging on about stereo 3D before but here I am getting all evangelical again.

For those who haven't a clue what I'm on about, there are various ways to get stereo 3D vision from your PC but all of them rely on showing two images. One for each eye. Google for Stereo 3D and you'll find a host of sites explaining it. There is a set of Nvidia drivers dedicated to producing perfect 3D.

My own setup involves two projectors, each with a polarizing filter, used in conjunction with polarized glasses.

The result is that from my view point I feel as though I am actually sat in the cockpit of my race car and the track is stretching off into the distance. It really is so good that you feel as though you could touch the mirrors or the dash. You actually forget that there is a screen there at all.

The problem is that there's no screenshot that I can show you. It's one of those things that you have to try so I'm considering having an 'open day' (in Oxford) for anyone who wants to have a go.

Maybe in return you can teach me how to drive fast!

Let me know if you're interested

Could we have a version of south city with all barriers removed?

It would be great for the cops and robbers style server.

Buying a HMD is never going to be a sensible decision... it's a silly one! ask anyone who watches you racing in it! But from the inside it's very cool!

It's great. best thing about it is the stereo 3D which everyone should try at least once to see what they've been missing. I can't believe stereo 3d is so ignored in the race sim world. Second best is being able to look around simply by moving your head. I will miss this with my new setup. I haven't found it uncomfortable but I've never worn it for more than 2 hours at a time. (light-weight racer!) SVGA res is not really a problem. the fact that there's two SVGA images blended seems to help a lot. I guess if you've been used to UXGA you're going to notice the difference, but for me, the sense of real depth outweighs any resolution issue. Field of view is still not amazing with any HMD and this is the best consumer one on the market. It's about the same as a 21" screen viewed close up....but of course, you can turn your head to see more.

Just thought I'd add my two pence worth to the noob debate...

I was on a public server last night when some poor new guy got a real earful after causing a crash and saying sorry. He left without another word. This is not the way to treat newcomers to our sport! I just hope this guy didn't leave for good. I know it's annoying when your race is ruined by incompetent driving and I know that people will say 'learn offline'. But come on guys, show a bit of tolerance. These are not league races. Encourage the new recruits. Congratulate them when they get their new PB's and thank them when they let you past. That way we might have more racers and a bigger choice of populated servers in the future.

A former Noob.

still im curious of 3dglasses effect, how does anybody feel that with lfs?

I'd never race in 2D! Can't fathom why anybody does! get some shutter glasses (often cheap on ebay) and the nvidia stereo3d driver and give it a try.

Quote from Burnzoire :as pointed out trackir is a bit redundant there - mind posting pics or your setup?

z800 head tracker is not accurate enough for racing. I found I had to re-centre frequently. TrackIR is 100% accurate.

As you can see from the pic, I have mounted the trackIR 3 point thingy on my z800
