The sixth round of the Apex Cup was held Friday the 16th on Fern Bay Gold with the TBO class.
In qualifying it was LIU He from Native Racers who took the pole position with a time of 1:32.27, which was 0.17 faster than Nolan Scott who took the second place. Elton Chong was the only driver in the top 6 that used the XRT instead of the faster FXO, he set the third time with a 1:32.53. Modestas Runas and Luis Barbosa took the 4th and 5th place on the grid with an identical time of 1:32.58.
In the sprint race it were the drivers in the RB4 who gained the most places at the start of the race due to the faster acceleration compared to the other cars. Kevin Leu from Concept Racing managed to pass seven drivers after the first corner, while Rudy van Buren gained three places reaching 4th position. Unfortunately Rudy van Buren had to retire from the race in lap 6 when his front tires of his RB4 overheated. Rasmus Salo and Luis Barbosa lost the most positions in the first lap after being involved in an accident. The top 4 drivers drove a consistent race without to many mistakes, C.Elton who started from pole won the Sprint race with his teammate H.Liu right Behing him. K.Leu took the 3rd place while N.Scott gathered some important points for the championship, finishing in 4th.
The main race started with the top 10 reversed. R.Salo who started from pole position had a good start but lost several positions during the race. K.Leu once again had a great start getting into 3rd after the first turn, he managed to gain one more position in the end which brought him the 2nd place. M.Runas drove a dominant race and took the first place in lap 7, he never came into trouble and won the main race with a 5 second lead over K.Leu. D.Lind drove his way to a podium place after being involved in a accident in lap 2. L.Barbosa, who is second in the drivers championship received a drive-through for speeding in the pitlane. This cost him valuable points in the championship standings. N.Scott didn't have a great race but still finished in 5th which brought him 8 points. Rudy van Buren who switched to the XRT in the main race drove a good race and finished in 4th after started from 14th. This was mainly due to his early pit-stop where he had a clear track while returning to the track. While others had to make their pit-stops R.v.Buren gained several positions.
In the championship standings the biggest win was for Nolan Scott, who is now 16 points clear over Luis Barbosa. Kevin Leu also did a great job, he is now 3rd with only 2 points between himself and L.Barbosa. But with 36 points still to be won in the final race, there is nothing decided yet. In the teams championship it's a close battle in front with ineX Racing leading Conquest Racing.
We look forward to the final round of this first season. Round 7 will be held on the 23rd of July on Kyoto Ring GP Long with the GTR class. The FZ50 GTR will have some restriction, which will be announced as soon as possible. Who will be the first Championship winner of Apex Cup?
