"People under 18 are NOT too irresponsible to drive"
Hey guys

I have to write a speech on this but I am having some difficulty, you see there arn't really enough facts to support this im stuck around half way I need some ideas why this is true.

cheers

EDIT: Title is wrong its supposed to be "People under 18 are NOT too irresponisble to drive"
fixed title for you .

afraid i cannot help you with the speech though, Tarring too many people with the same brush.

many people in general are too irresponsible to drive... Especially 8/10 drivers in britain. (im a londoner so im sure other brits will understand what i mean)

Good luck though.
Thanks Franky
Try to come up with both sides of the arguement, then compare the two and come to a conclusion at the end. The arguement against the subject title could be the statistics showing more under 18s have accidents, you would probably find some research on the internet carried out by insurance companies to prove that. The other side of the arguement could be that not all under 18s conform to the statistics, each individual is unique, and just because a statistic says 80% of people do something, doesn't mean the other 20% don't exist.

Often they just want you to provide a balanced arguement for both sides, then reach a conclusion, maybe with a few statistics thrown in to show you did some research, do that and the rest is quite simple.
Include stereotypes in there. Stereotyping is a bit thing these days with all this "political correctness" around so automatically assuming someone under the age of 18 is a boy racer and will crash is completely wrong.

As ATC-Q said, if its being marked by an examiner then you need to give an unbiased view of both sides and back it up with actual statistics. Maybe do a small survey and ask people who are older and younger about their views on this and then put together a report on it.
May be worth mentioning that the actual statistics only take into account age, not experience. A 30 year old new to driving is every bit as likely to be involved in a collision as a 16 year-old who is new to driving.

It is not that they are irresponsible, they lack experience.

When I got my license I was in an accident within 6 months of getting it. Cause? Lack of experience....

I was following someone too closely (about 2 car lengths) and they slammed on the brakes at a green light that had barely just turned yellow like a complete moron and since the vehicle I was driving couldn't stop in time I hit them.

Was I a bad driver? No. Could I drive stick better than 99% of my friends? Yes. Did I have enough experience to know that the vehicle I was driving at at the time couldn't go from 40-0 in 30 feet? No...

It takes time to learn how to drive well. Everyone makes mistakes, people with less experience behind the wheel are going to make more mistakes than those who have been driving for some time. You learn how to predict other peoples movements on the road and how to think ahead. These are things that only experience can teach you.

It really has nothing to do with age...it has everything to do with experience...and when it comes to the elderly it has a lot to do with motor skills and other things...

That's not to say that there aren't some kids out there who do some pretty stupid stuff like texting while driving, eating while driving, talking to their friends and doing moronic things in the cab of the vehicle while driving, not paying attention to the road and whatever else kids do...we all know we stupid things and to say we never did is pretty stupid...

As we grow up experence teaches us that doing stupid stuff is...stupid...

What a great lesson to be teaching people, what class do you need to do this paper for?
My literature teacher doesnt drive, because he says that he's not good at it... and he's 36yo-ish

At least someone has the sense to know when they suck at something. Good for him!

(seriously. I'm not being sarcastic here.)
Tbh, some people under 18 are and others aren't.

I'm 15 and I know only about a dozen people my age who would be responsible behind the steering wheel of a car.

Yes it's funny, he doesnt even know how to drive...i think that's why
PS: I hate him

I'm not sure I agree on that. I think a 30 year old new driver would be more mature typically and be a more safe new driver than a 16 year old. BUT, we don't know....so this would be something that would be great to research for your speech R34king. If you found the accident statistics were similar between new drivers who are 16 and those who are 30, then you could say that it's primarily inexperience not irresponsibility causing a higher proportion of accidents.

The thing about statistics from a corporation that releases them will have in 'big writing' the 20% of crashes that occur with young drivers, than the 40% of crashes that occur with older drivers, the RTA (Roads and Traffic Authority) for example.

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/road ... volving_young_drivers.pdf

^ that for example focuses mainly on crashes involved in under 25's.
While I think it's unfair to say that every driver under 18 is irresponsible, I have to go with my experience and say that for the most part, teenagers are morons and I sure as hell wouldn't get into a car with most of the kids who I see on the road.

Just because there's the odd exception (and my little brother is one of them, he turns 19 in November and has been driving for nearly 2 years) doesn't mean that it's suddenly not true. Obviously there are plenty of older drivers who are morons too, but without going to extremes, experience does generally mean you're less likely to make mistakes.
Not allowed to vote(well just let vote), not allowed to drink, but allowed into a ton of metal on public streets... don't fancy writing that report myself... my heart would not be in it...
Quote from Homeless_Drunk :I was following someone too closely (about 2 car lengths) and they slammed on the brakes... ...like a complete moron and... ...I hit them.

That's the absolute definition of a bad driver. Age has nothing to do with knowing you can't stop in two car lengths, and in the UK you'd never have got your licence if you tailgated anyone like that. Yes we all get better with experience, but if the starting point is sufficiently bad that you don't know what a safe distance is, then it's simply a case of being a bad driver.

Yes. You shouldn't have been following that close if you knew the vehicle you were driving couldn't stop in that distance.
im kinda against this. of course there is some kids who can drive well and are responsible to drive but most of people in age of 18-20 are still too irresponsible to drive cars. i know few people in that age and everytime time i see them driving most of em are speeding or just driving dangerously.
Generally, young people ARE too irresponsible to drive. To eager to 'prove' how good they are, especially in front of friends. To keen to show off. Too impatient. To selfish. Generally lacking in anticipation.

And young people have what I believe is called 'a feeling of invulnerability', something that lessens with time and responsibility. Having people on the road who think 'I can do this, I'll be fine' isn't really compatible with the majority of drivers.

Personally I think the driving age should be increased to about 23, when a larger proportion of people have "calmed down". This should be enforce world wide, expect in the USA, where it should rise to about 35.

Herein lies the problem - how the funk am i supposed to go anywhere? I have a bus to school, and that's it - I think one bus a week stops in my village, and the nearest town is around 7 miles away, and the nearest town with anything in it is about 20 miles away - how am i actually supposed to DO anything...?

It's all well and good bitching and moaning about young drivers when your old enough for it not to affect you, but just think back to when you were 17 - 23 and lived in the middle of nowhere...

Stupid age rules - at 16, i can have sex and get married. But i cant make or watch porn 'till i'm 18...? I can drive a bike at 16, and a car at 17, but I can't operate a conveyor belt at work 'till i'm 18

That's an interesting progression actually:

16 - sex, marriage, bikes
17 - sex, marriage, bikes, cars
18 - sex, marriage, bikes, cars, porn viewing and creating, conveyor belts
