now that false starts are being added, how about a display of the driver's reaction time off the line, maybe as a new column in the results display? (measuring the time from the green light until the driver dumps the clutch). would be most useful for drag racing, but wouldn't hurt to know who's fastest off the line on circuits as well.

Sounds nice in theory... but the problem is, you can dump the clutch several times before you actually move--and then you can move a little before the light goes green without penalty, so

anything that happens before the green light would obviously be irrelevant.
+1 this would be a good benchmark of sorts

Not if everyone's already creeping forward when the light turns green...

don't you have anything better to do than dream up lame excuses why something might not work?

scawen wrote the false start code, and would obviously know how it works, and what conditions to key off of. dropping the clutch, disengaging the park brake, reaching a non-zero speed, WHATEVER. i don't care which, and it's not for us to argue anyway.

the suggestion was to measure the reaction time SOMEHOW, and either you would find that information useful or not.
Reaction time is pretty important in the world of drag racing. Good suggestion.

it is 1/2 the battle that most people ignore...

If you just have a penalty for jumping...and possibly if they could replicate the staging beams like they are in real life it would be the first drag racing sim that I know of...

The way staging beams work in real life is there is a prestage beam and a stage beam When your tire leaves the stage beam (farthest away) it starts the clock. There is 6 inches between the beams iirc. Your car gets to move for a certain distance based on how shallow or deep you staged before the timer starts. This is how you get a better reaction time. You leave on one of the yellow bulbs so the tire leaves the beam to get a perfect reaction time. Granted, I doubt it would be easy...but it would certainly be more fun than a practice tree sitting at the coffee table...
Would be cool to see what your real PB COULD be... =)
