More Gears In Transmissions
I wanna keep this short and straight to the point, would it be possible to add more gears in the transmissions like max 10 ? As majority of modern vehicles carry 7 to 8 or even 9 speeds, and would be good for the semi truck mods as well, just a simple request.

Well, 10-speed manual transmission does exist, but currently I have no idea what car is created to use for it, or an engine.

Definitely 8-speed does exist and is currently in use on various ( although not many ) vehicles.
Sure but I have my doubts that 7,8,9 speed gearboxes are fitted to the majority of modern vehicles. I'm happy to be proved wrong though.
Until then I'll just go on believing that 5 and 6 speed are the usual thing. Big grin
Trucks usually have many gears because the engine rpm range where it has best efficiency is very short. Therefore, many gears are required for the truck to cover wide moving speed range. F1 cars have 8 gears now days. Most modern road cars have up to 6 gears, some supercars have up to 7 gears. So, stats wise 6 is enough, but some odd balls need more.

Given the variety of mods, there seems to be the need for more than 6 gears to replicate transmission systems. My oppinion is that allowing 8 gears should cover mostly everything, but it's up to Scawen to decide.
99% of racing cars have 6 gears, except F1 which has 8, they are hybrids and have DRS, which is why they cannot be recreated in LFS. The focus should be on finishing the tire physics so that LFS is once again the best racing simulator, and not a game of poorly recreated touring cars or motorcycles.

Maybe saying "majority" might be a stretch but here are examples and applications of 8-10 speed transmissions used in many production vehicles.

Surely adding 2 more gears to LFS wouldnt take 3 months to add and honestly its a suggestion with actual irl applications, just cause its a racing simulator doesnt mean it should only have racing car gearboxes only, .. i mean we have pickup trucks, semi's, busses and WW|| tanks so coding a lil string from 1~7 to 1~9 wouldnt hurt anyone right? and also make it lock the amount from inside editor

Btw theres street car mods everywhere in the game. Not sure what u meant by those are all street cars when LFS has a ton of street cars proving my point if they in LFS why not allow more gears for them and future mods that may carry more than 7 speeds, i cant be demanding too much... am i?

I'm quite sure it's not as simple as changing one variable in one line of code. If it were, Scawen would have already done it. However, the suggestion is reasonable and we need support from more people in community.

Anyway, start of April is very close and I'd rather Scawen gets his hands on tyre physics, than to get sidetracked again by these "small and quick updates". There's an infinite amount of them and there will allways be, can you "just do this one" before..

Understandable..
To add to the "changing one line of code": maybe (and I say maybe) it would be that simple to change the maximum number of gears.
But then, you have to check other parts of the game, make sure it works on any vehicle with more than 7 gears, update the UI properly to allow tweaking gear ratios for all gears (does it still fit the screen if you have 10 or more?). You also have to consider InSim, which sends packets with the current gear, is there anything that needs to change to accommodate the higher number of gears?

It really never is that easy to change something in code, or rather it is usually only somewhat easy in smaller projects. That said, I agree that at some point (ideally of course after the new physics and graphics), it would be nice to see more than 7 gears for some vehicles. As has been said, although it is a *racing* simulator, we do have street cars in the official selection of cars, and they can race...
And not only the interface, also the setup file format. Other things are already shoehorned in there. The 7th gear ratio is in a completely different position in the file, where it was queezed in to support the BF1 (I think).

So it's not an easy thing to add at this point, although it's an obvious thing to support. The larger setup file requires version support in the setup file reader, an adjustment to multiplayer packets and ability to read old MPRs with old style setups in them, etc. "Changing a number" is far from the reality. Better to do it at the same time as some other additions to the setup file.

Well that's just for interest and to explain why it's way too difficult to do right now.

My comment earlier was not in opposition to the suggestion, but about the statement that "the majority" of modern vehicles have 7 or more gears.

That statement seemed very unlikely, and I did ask if somehow this change in technology had passed me by unnoticed. I prefer suggestions to be based on reality rather than fiction.

EDIT: I think what I mean to say is I would prefer to be persuaded by calm reasoning rather than exaggeration.

Oh no worries Scawen when i said "maybe saying majority is a stretch" i was talking about me when i said that and the reason why i said that was ive had experience with 8 and 9 speeds irl and also just wanna say i drove a hyundai elantra coupe looking rental car when i did a tune in my Bmw and was shocked it had a 9 speed autimatic with tiptronic, in a hyundai elantra ?!?!?!?but i understand and just wanna say thanks to everyone in here that engaged with the suggestion. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

But yeah, back on topic. If we are looking from Scawen's perspective about this thread. And about what LFS Editor can offer... and looking real life vehicles as today, it is quite understandable about not taking this improvement suggestion as a high priority.

There can be so many different engines, transmissions and chassis layouts that it simply requires vastly to improve generally speaking, little bit everything and beyond. Furthermore, we are not have seen yet the announced things, which contains definitely a various things to modify with LFS Editor as well. ( Assuming, that those options are available as well. )


What I think most of this suggestion, is simply about fulfilling people's creativeness. As in history has shown, people tend to try and create what inmost craziest concepts, unique designs, "lightbulb moments" or even just plain blueprint ideas, regardless of it's practical use or not. LFS Editor as being a software, simply helps people to craft virtually basically whatever they want to. For example, I tried to make a monocycle back then and some other various things. Unfortunately I encountered some... "limits" and ultimately noticed some issues between realism and virtualism... and on top of that, my skill level reached it's limit, as well as my time.
