Graphics Cards
as many of you know my pc has 2x 6600GT's, they are supposed to work in SLi (and used to), but for me they never have, and always made my pc crashed, finally, i am so fed up with having a graphics card the just sits there, i am selling them both on eBay, and am buying a new one, what do you think is the best deal for £150?
150 GBP = 278 USD

If it goes for the same price over there as it does here, the 7900GT. It's even faster than your 2x 6600GT's combined. It also happens to be the one I was looking at getting to replace my 6800GT.
Nvidia or ATI?

For Nvidia a 7600GT is somewhere around £150, next one up is a 7900GT at around £200. I'm going to buy an XFX 6800XTreme for my new computer but looking at your specs you'll be wanting a better one.

On www.aria.co.uk there's a POV Nvidia 6800GS 512mb for £150, that might be good enough.

It depends on what you want, if you want the brand new GPU chip then get a 7-series but if you want more performance on an older chip then get a 6-series.

EDIT: @Forbin - the cheapest 7900GT is £206.74 here.

yeah, £160 really is max, plus everything cost quite a lot more over here!

btw, my current cpu is an AMD 4000

EDIT - My specs nicked from my DH sig - AMD 64 4000+ (Oc'ed 5% in Bios), 2x XFX 256 Mb 6600, GT's SLi (Oc'ed), 1 Gb Corsair Value Ram, 2x 80 Gb SATA's (4 partitions), Asus A8N SLi Premium, 580 W Hiper PSU, Coolermaster Wavemaster Case, Creative P380's, Iiyama ProLite E431S, Logitech Momo Wheel, M$ Sidewinder Wheel (Purely For Pedals), Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard & Logitech MX-1000 Mouse

3D Mark 03 - 15,764
3D Mark 05 - 7,652
3D Mark 06 - 3,262

EDIT - Been looking at either a 6800 or a 7600 GT, but i hear that the 8600 is coming out soon, so i dont know!
@Leifde: I'm quite certain the 7600GT is faster than the 6800GS.

If the 7900GT is too expensive, I say go with a 7800GT if you can find one, or a 7600GT, but not the 7600GS, and certainly not a 6xxx series.

@Jakg: Yeah, the 8xxx series is coming out soon, as in 4th quarter of this year.
With an AMD 4000 (awesome chip btw) you need some serious GPU power to keep from holding it back. I don't know how prices work over there, but if the 7900GT is too expensive, then maybe the ATI 1800XT 256MB would be close to your price range. Its typically less expensive here, and performance is comparable (in many cases favorable) to the 7900GT.

Good Luck, your new rig looks sweet.

the 7600GT is what i was looking at, seeing as the 6800's seem to have dissapeared, eBay is now (as a pose to 2 weeks ago when it was deviod) flooded with 6600's, which doesnt help, but the 8600 (acording to my "contact") will be 7600 price, 7800 speed

well in LFS its at 85-90%, but then it is stock atm

? Is that comparing the 1800XT to the 7900GT? I wasn't aware of any direct comparisons using lfs. Do tell!!!

For LFS only I believe you'd be set with the 7600GT, but it might leave you wanting more on higher res, more graphically intensive games at higher resolutions. Thats just me. The 7600GT would blow LFS away, at any res with full details. Games like GTR2 though coming out soon though might push the 7600GT to its limits I'd imagine if you run at resolution 1280x1024 or higher.

no, my CPU with LFS on one or two cards running 4 AA and 8 AF, im leaning with the 8600 ATM
As 6600's go for about £60 a pop each brand new, you'll be looking at about 40-50 each.

But don't buy a card now. If you can hold off a few months, wait for ATi and nVidia to push out their latest line of cards, will drop prices so much. Also, if you buy a new ATi X19x0, it'll come with GDDR4, which makes them even damn cheaper.

your contact might not be very reliable.. the G80 (New Nvidia Chip) will be Dirext X 10, which will basically need vista, and also, to run previous DX games (7 - 9) it needs a software layer in between so its not as fast. it also wont be coming out until about the release ov vista. my bet is the 7900GT, which will do you until maybe end of 2007 when dx10 really takes hold.

7900GT 256MB for 185GBP
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/7900_Series.html

I can run with that LFS at 1024*768 full details 16xAA(no that not typo,NVIDIA can do really 16xAA but not officially)+16AF with decent frame rates. You have better processor even then me.

X1800XT 256MB for 165GBP

Not a bad card but I heard that big cooler is very noisy from many reviews no that the one on 7900Gt wouldnt be as well but not as much.

Just putting Zalman VF700 or VF900 will give you total silent.

these are top of the range XFX 6600GT 256 Mb versions, as sold new for £85 right now, and thanks, but you all seem to recomend cards i cant afford! no offence tho, thanks for your help, i might try a format to see if it helps...
If you're on a shoe string, wait for the next range of cards (around september rumored for gefo8's), which will push all prices down, meaning you get a better deal.

Wait till the end of august as during that onth new ATI GPU`s will be coming.
They will be built on 80nm process so it mean ATI can set pretty low pricing which will reduce also price of NVIDIA cards as well.

Examples of upcoming cards:

ill try a clean install first, see if that does it
Slightly off-topic but does anyone know where I can get a 7600GT for £100? (Preferably more like £90)

ebay? cheapest ive found is £123
Hmm, I might have to bid for that, unless you're bidding. If you're bidding then you'll outbid me, you have £150 to spend, I have £100

EDIT: Unless you only want one and I can buy the other off you?
#20 - Jakg
that deal sounds good Leifde, but im not bidding, although if we bought two and split the cost...
I would do that but I doubt my dad would agree to it I also don't have the money for my computer until a couple of weeks from now.

EDIT: Unless you could hold it for me until I get the money?
Look for GALAXY GF7600GS PCI-E 256DDR3/ 128b Zal HDTV TV. Should cost around 100pounds.

Its a undercloked 7600GT but only by a very small margin.
Default 7600GT has 560/1400,this one has 500/1400 and use same core and memory with same rating. What is cool on this model it use Zalman coller which run very quiet(well almost silent) and you can overclock this card way beyond 7600GT specification due to this special cooler.

OR....real 7600GT from Leadtek - 117GBP including VAT.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/7600_Series.html
They don't sell that Galaxy 7600GS in the UK
Quote from Leifde :They don't sell that Galaxy 7600GS in the UK

Thats a real shame.
So what about the Leadtek 7600GT from that link I gave you?I know its a bit more then 100GPB but not that far.Maybe you could find another online-ratailer in UK with better price.
Found out I'd configured my new comp with two lots of RAM, giving my 2GB, I only need 1 So that gives me an extra £50 to spend on a graphics card.

I'm looking at XFX 7600GT XXX Edition, it comes slightly overclocked already and it's £130.
