Jimmy Broadbent did a video on LFS a couple of days ago - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZEY2JvWJ4I

Still a lot of love for it in the comments, and hopefully a few new players checked it out on the back of it Wink

Man, that is such sad news. RIP Shaun.

I've finally upgraded from s2 to s3. I like the idea of supporting the dev team so I haven't done it for the extra track.

After recently purchasing a wheel I came back after a few years away. I've done Assetto Corsa, GT Sport etc but nothing "feels" like LFS.

Great to see that Scawen, Eric and Victor are back on it with renewed enthusiasm. I can't wait to see what the future holds ;-)

Good to here that this event went pretty well. Really hope this works out for you after all your hard work and investment.

Quote from Mazz4200 :People will moan whether they have any right to or not, that's a given.

From experience, the Dev's have been pretty tolerant of all the complaining, it's only when it reaches a head that they tend to respond. From all the whinging posts i've read, i get the distinct impression quite a few folk in here simple don't "get" LFS, they don't understand the ethos behind the game, they don't understand the working practices, they don't understand the basic character of the game/it's community or the Developers, they don't understand the amount of work involved, or the spirit in which the whole enterprise lives. LFS is a bit like a cottage industry, or a friendly little country pub that only serves real ales and home made food. It's not a place that endlessly churns out insipid fizzy lagers or mass produced tasteless boil in the bag chicken tikka. It's a niche product, it's a quality product, it's a hand built, coach built Rolls Royce or Morgan car. LFS isn't Toyota or GM, it's a bespoke product, it's a thing of quality, not quantity.

Superb post, although I'm a new comer to LFS the above echoes my sentiments on the subject perfectly.

Quote from mo010 :I attached a replay from 07 with my PB, if somebody can manage to view it. As it is in patch X I think...

No need to do that, I never doubted you I was just curious

Regarding getting frustrated about lap times - I've been low 1.35's on BL in XFG for a while now and can't crack the 1.34 bracket - even though on servers which tell you your theoretical PB, my best 3 sectors total 1:34.70.

Just can't string them together - it's soooo frustrating

Quote from G!NhO :It's totally uinrealistic and it's not a nice feature imo.

Hmmm, we're talking about a "practice" feature here, what's the problem?

If you want to be pedantic about "unrealistic" features - what about being able to press CTRL-P during the race to magically teleport to the pits.

What we are discussing here is simply a facility in practice to focus on a particular section of a track.

Or are you soooo hardcore that you believe the "simulation" should constrain all modes of LFS?

Quote from mo010 : I used to easily get 35's in patch X. My PB is 1:34.60,

Thanks

Was that offline as your LFSworld stats state your PB as - 1:40.500?

A "replay sector" feature would be a useful addition for practice sessions as I tend to find it's only one particular sector I lose the most time on, eg, Blackwood - sector 2.

Quote from farcar :That's more of a blurb on why the devs don't touch base with the community more often. Not really what I meant...

Although they were touching base - albeit about not touching base

Regularly updating the community is a really important thing IMO. Doesn't have to be detailed or specific, just a means to touch base and confirm that they're still active in development.

They have "touched base" recently -

Quote from Scawen :Had a few minutes spare to read some posts here.

Once again I see some people are really getting angry again, and that is a pity.

I have said we are working on things but of course that does not calm some people down. The problem is that we are working on some things that will be released at some point, and some things that may or may not be released (experimental). But experience has taught us to just keep quiet when we are developing things, experimental or not.

Why?

In the case of things we are developing that will almost certainly be released, we would really love to tell the community. And thousands of forum or website readers might be pleased about that. But in time, a few people (maybe a hundred or so) will begin to become angry and frustrated, if for example we were unable to reach our release estimate. Just look at the Scirocco. While we wait for me to improve things that will improve the Scirocco, we can see hundreds of posts of anger and frustration, so we are constantly reminded, never to post information about a future release, until we are 99.9% certain that we can make the release date. We made the Scirocco announcement when we were only say... 95% certain we could make the release date, and this has caused the most amazing amount of grief. We have only ourselves to blame, and a direct apology does not fix the mess we caused by this announcement. Most community members accepted our apology but you can just read the forum to see hundreds of attacks on our work rate, secrecy, rudeness and our general bad attitude.

In the other case, where we are working on things that are in an experimental stage, and may or may not turn out to be released in the end, it's even more important not to say anything. Because this would just raise expectations and excitement, that is highly likely to turn to anger once again, when some weeks of experimental work may possibly turn out to be unused in the end.

In the past, we did write development progress reports on our website, but sometimes we had to make changes, drop an idea here or there before release, sometimes adding something else instead. Sometimes the thing we were working on did not get released, but the backlash for such a thing is just too much.

Face to face I could say to someone, "this is what I am working on". And later I could say "I couldn't finish that, for this and that reason, anyway this is what we have come up with". There would be some kind of acceptance or discussion about that. But on the internet there are some angry people around! And they make it very very clear that they are very very angry! It really is a minority of people... most people out there reading the forums behave online just the same way as in real life, with some manners, and normal human respect. But some people really lose it and unfortunately they do so, very long and very hard. So in the end, it turns out that the best way forward is just to keep on working, ignore the angry posts and so on, remind ourselves, that is just a small minority of people, and just keep going. The less information we reveal about our development plans, the less there will be to moan about when something changes or we don't meet the expected release dates.

Even with all the arguments, moaning and anger about our apparent secrecy, it's still better to keep quiet, even though it would really be nice to be able to say things like "this is something we are working on, although we're not sure when it will be finished" or "we are taking a few weeks to experiment with this thing" for the sake of general interest. That really is what we used to do but experience has led us to where we are now. I don't think that will ever change, it won't be possible to go back to a time when we could give a lot more information about our plans. Because as the realism level goes up and up, it becomes harder and harder (and takes a lot more time) to make one small step. That is what we are doing, small steps, LFS goes forward a little bit more each year. It would be really great if we could work 10 times as fast or whatever, but we just have to go on at a sustainable rate, doing this work that we enjoy, and in the way that we want to work (not by moving into an office and employing people - that's not why we are doing this - and if anyone wants to do that you are very welcome to do so yourself - there are programmers and artists for hire and you can start up your own company).

Anyway, once again, we are working on things and expect some good releases this year!

Quote from PMD9409 :Just going to thank you guys for watching, was a pretty "hectic" race. Going from literally dead last, a lap down, to finish second is pretty crazy IMO.

Regarding tires, I only changed my tires when I fixed my damage first lap.

Regarding last lap, Deko checked the replay and nothing "wrong" was found. We knew that Vecchioni was holding back for the last lap, we just didn't know when he would make a move. We never blocked, because "low-lining" is not considered it (IMO). We never changed line, just stayed on the bottom. I was the second car, and wasn't going to leave Nolan's bumper, as we were racing each other also. I stayed close to Nolan's bumper, and (from in my car) it looked like Vecchioni just went straight into the back of me, causing himself to spin.

I don't know exactly, I'll be reviewing the replay.

I only caught the last 18 laps but you where getting a lot of commentary then. I'm just downloading the replay and looking forward to watching the fight back

Quote from Mille Sabords :Change the "Button control rate" value for RWD cars with a lot of power (much lower! around 2-3, play with it).
This will force a ramp into your inputs, making all of them progressive.
Setups can also help - open the differential a bit more to get stability out of corners.
Both will cost you speed but also make your driving more consistent and reliable.

A wheel would of course make it better

Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a try
