Gear shift animations?
mrwallace888

Something I always thought would be neat, especially since LFS already has good steering animations (a few updates back it even got increased from 720 to 900 degrees or something like that), since it's a sim it'd make sense to add some gear shift animations too, primarily manual stick shifters and paddle shifters. Cars that use a sequential stick shifter like rally and touring cars could probably just use the manual stick shifter animation or something.

I don't know, I just like the smaller details like that. Considering all the other nifty features and realism of LFS I'm surprised this wasn't something that's included already lol.

As a bit of a side note, it's kind of funny seeing how all of you guys are discussing this. Both with providing facts and also being civil. As an American, things are hell here, and the way they're fearmongering and twisting things on the media here. Especially on FOX News, too. It seems like a lot of Americans, for whatever reason, are supportive more of the Russians than the Ukrainians. Like I just look at the facts and look at proper sources and have civil discussions, but with Americans they get all pissed off about everything and turn a blind eye. I was talking to someone the other day about the situation and he was going off for like an hour about how shitty Ukraine was and how much they deserved all this with how horribly they treated Russia, and I was just like "What the hell are you even on about?"

I saw a video the other day where a guy was just driving on the road. A Russian tank went out of his way to veer into him and crush the car for no reason. The guy was alive, thankfully, but that's literally a war crime, maybe two. Because intentionally killing a civilian (or trying to) and unnecessarily destroying civilian property are both considered war crimes.

What I think a lot of people, especially Americans, fail to realize sometimes is that not everything is just pure politics. Like this whole Russia V. Ukraine thing. It's less about your political views and more about what's truly at stake. Like it doesn't matter, for example, if you're left-wing or right-wing, because murder is still murder in the end, and murder is wrong. Killing a civilian is still killing a civilian, and killing civilians are wrong.

I just hope things in Ukraine get better. I've been talking to a lot of Ukrainians and they're bloody terrified. But the Russians are, too. I've seen Russian soldiers who are against this, yet they don't really have much of a choice. And with the US starting to get involved, as well as possibly other countries, this may end up becoming World War III, or at least a much bigger conflict than what was originally started.

What I don't get mostly is why the redline uses such strange increments. I took the XRG which has a redline of 7000 and decreased it to like 6999. And then all of a sudden it thinks the redline is 6200 RPM (especially when I turn on 5-step tachometer). Like the fact it drops that low seems oddly specific.

LFS Vehicle Editor - Redline Bug

There's a strange bug with how the redline on the dashboard works, and I was wondering if it could somehow get fixed? I loaded up a car in the editor and provided an example.
Can pages and skins in the editor use DDS instead of PNG/JPG? + Redlining Bug?

Two things I wanted to know:

When assigning textures in the vehicle editor, some textures are in DDS format. However, making pages and skins for vehicles requires me to have them in PNG format for textures and JPG format for skins. It won't let me use DDS format, which is a little bit annoying. Is there a way to use them? I've been converting each individual skin and texture to their correct format by using Paint.NET, but it'd be preferable to just use the DDS stuff straight-up, instead.

Also, there's a strange bug with modded vehicles. The tachometer's visual redline typically starts at where the actual engine redline is. But with most modded vehicles (but not all of them), the redline is earlier than the actual engine redline? For example, Rubie's Civic EK9 mod (VKI-6) has an engine redline of 9500 RPM. But the visual redline on the gauge actually starts at 9000. It's a minor thing, but what causes it? Or if I come across it on my own mod, how to fix it? For example, a car I'm working on has a redline of 8750 RPM, but the visual redline shows it going up to only like 8200 RPM for some reason, so the needle goes past the redline, or rather, a redline that is higher than it portrays.

Hey Rubie, could you lower the redline? It's at like 9500 give or take, but 8500 I feel would make more sense.
Here's a friendly reminder that Live For Speed is almost 20 years old!

I've played Live For Speed for a long time. Not as long as some of the veterans here, but still a long time. Like since around 2016 or so. And it's amazing because a lot of people claim Live For Speed still has some of the best tire physics out there, especially when compared to Gran Turismo, Assetto Corsa, etc. And it just goes to show how much passion is put into Live For Speed. And this game is only made by like a couple people, who've achieved so much in the process.

What amazes me the most is not only the tire model, but the graphics. For years they've been working on a new graphics engine for the game, and it looks extremely amazing. It allows for proper lighting, 24-hour time cycles, automatic exposure adjustment, you name it.

Look at their astounding South City remake, for instance!

Or how about the automatic exposure adjustment?

Live For Speed is, without a doubt, extremely well made, especially for a game that started out in like, what, 2002 or so? THIS GAME IS ALMOST 20 YEARS OLD! Think about that for a minute!

Not only has it been living up to modern standards 20 years later, but it's still being actively developed and worked on. Imagine working on the same game for 20 freakin' years!

I wanted to take a moment to show appreciation and give thanks for the blood, sweat, and tears that Scawen has given to this game to make it as amazing as it is, even 20 years later down the line. Live For Speed shall never die. For it lives forever...

...it lives for speed.

What I like the MOST about this new mod system is that we can finally add cars instead of replace existing ones.

However, I wonder if there's any kind of workaround for this whole copyright system or regarding mods with assets from other games.

For example, BeamNG.drive. They have a mod repository both as a website and also viewable in-game. This repository is hosted by them, and due to this, car mods cannot be copyright (A popular VW Golf mod is rebranded as the AW Astro). Though it's weird because people make car engines that are from real engines (Like a Chevy Duramax diesel engine for the Gavril D-Series).

HOWEVER, you can still make copyright mods or using models from other games, by uploading said mods on their forums instead. And this got me wondering if we can do something similar here? Where we can make add-on vehicles that don't replace existing ones and are copyrighted or whatever, just at the cost of you have to upload it here instead of it being available on LFS's repository.

Something that I'd like to see, when this eventually gets updated fully, is that maybe we'll be able to have custom dashboards for mod vehicles. I love that LFSLazy has a custom dashboard feature (makes you wonder why it's not a vanilla feature), and now that we have PROPER mod vehicles where it doesn't replace existing ones, now we can use our own dashboards instead of the vanilla system.
Have virtual AND real mirrors on | Map Mods?
mrwallace888
S3 licensed
It'd be nice to have the ability to turn both virtual and real mirrors on, especially since I like using the virtual mirror sometimes but hate how it makes the mirrors in the car turn black. We're able to have both virtual and real dials, could the same be done with mirrors?

What's the possibility on map mods? The system we already have is some strange layout system, which I guess is kind of cool but it can be janky sometimes. Having a proper map system where we can use completely custom maps would be nice.

Quote from BeNoM :https://www.lfs.net/forum/thread/97038-Test-Patch-A9---Export-skin-template-from-garage

"Changes from 0.7A to 0.7A2:

AI for Mods:

AI paths can be generated for mods with a drive system, excluding bikes
- Paths can only be generated in single player
- Simply add your AI and click GO
- You have to wait a while the first time the path is generated
- NOTE: If the vehicle can roll, the AI does not avoid rolling it"

I can't use ANY modded vehicles though, without it going "Could not find file". All I do is pick the vehicle in the garage, then add the AI to the roster and press "GO" after picking a track. The error comes up, and nothing else. I even restarted, just in case.
Unable to use modded vehicles for AI?

Is this intentional? Was just trying to dick around with vehicle mods and was like "I wonder if the AI can drive them". Especially wanted to see what happens if they drove that Mosquito bike, lol.

Well, any modded vehicle I give them, I go to start the race and it says "Could not open file:" followed by some file of sorts with the internal name of the mod.

Quote from pärtan :Maybe that's one of the reasons why you don't want to play assetto corsa as you say? It's a prime example of why mod support in a realism focused game is a terrible idea.

Actually I'm just that not a big fan of Assetto Corsa in general. My computer can just barely run it. And it's annoying how half the cars in the game are locked off after purchasing the game (well then again LFS has the licenses, but still, if you buy S3 you get it all. Assetto Corsa's full expansion is expensive.). Also who said mods would ruin the game? You never truly know. People can work hard for stuff and get great results. If it doesn't come out okay, then so be it, at least they tried to get it working. I really enjoy LFS because it kinda has that sort of "charm" to it if you know what I mean. Other games can't even come close to this game's charm. At least in my eyes, anyways, which is why I'm suggesting stuff to make this game's charm even stronger.

Quote from UnknownMaster21 :I see your point for sure! And I give +1 for it...

..but isn't that a bit too mainstream? I like to somehow see fictional cars and tracks too.

You get the idea. My point is obviously that I want there to be add-on content from mod-makers. I'm not saying it has to be real stuff, of course. Fictional stuff would be just as great. Which reminds me, something I feel LFS needs is car badging on their vehicles. Like, maybe fictional car companies? Maybe the option to take them off if you have a custom skin (like a Honda skin for the XRT)?

Quote from UnknownMaster21 :I am afraid to say, that those suggestions are what we everybody know already about. Ain't gonna happen now or soon, but not impossible either.

Free Roaming with random point-to-point racing in open world is quite fun. Or even Car Navigation! Technically it isn't racing, but sport anyway. Actually, with layout, you can also make platform puzzling, going for with not-so-racing-skills required, but more like accuracy.

Again, it is not related for racing... but we have cruising tho.

Just let's stop suggest these due we all know about these, with reasons and things. It is already proven to be a fact that devs do their things on their own way, and we shall respect of it, or go away and make your own product. Smile Sure, you can always suggest some! Just go for something new Smile

You're not wrong. If none of the other things I REALLY want there to be proper car and track support. I'd love to see the Nordschliefe in LFS, and doing it in a McLaren 570s (Not a car replacement).
Some Features We Need
mrwallace888

I know you've heard this first request a gazillion times, but...

FREE ROAM! I know, I know, you've heard it several times already. I know the pinned thread shows this request as a commonly asked thing, but just bear with me here. We seriously need this type of feature in LFS. Westhill doesn't count, it's not exactly a free roam map, just more of a racetrack with some extra roads here and there. Not to mention it gets boring after a bit. We need like a PROPER free roam map, like South City in it's free roam form (not talking about the South City open-layout, I mean a separate normal variant of South-City that isn't like "track-ified"). I know it's a racing simulator and not a free roam simulator, but come on, we all want it, we all anticipate it, it's something that'd make this game great. If not then at least add map support. But think about it, like seriously. We've got a ton of LFS servers that are cruise-oriented, like TC City Driving.

Another thing we need are some animations for gear shifting and such. I know it's a simple little feature that we don't need, but I'm a sucker for games that pull it off. It just feels right in a way.

A major thing we need is PROPER MOD SUPPORT. I know we have car mods and stuff, but that stuff just straight-up replaces existing cars. We need a way to have add-on cars instead, so we can, I don't know, have a Supra as a separate car instead of a replacement for something like the XRT. We also need map mods, like, FULL-ON map mods. I'd love to see people port Initial D maps or something into the game, also as add-on maps and not replacement maps. If we can't have proper free roam in LFS then someone could at least make a custom free roam map. For car and map support, at least make it for S2/S3 users so demo users and maybe even S1 users can't just have everything at their fingertips if you understand what I mean here.

AND NO, I DON'T FEEL LIKE PLAYING ASSETTO CORSA OR PROJECT CARS. We finished, here? Good.

I guarantee you'll end up talking about how the free roam part isn't probable... but come on, guys...

ANOTHER QUICK THING
