I am following a well worn practice of mine... Wait for SP1. As there won't be an SP on Win10 due to continuous updates I will wait a few months and let the lemmings find all the upgrade bugs that trash your system lol

Unless you have serious dedicated hardware you will make nothing or next to nothing for your effort. In most cases it will just be a money drain in power costs

You are years to late into the game. Miners have moved from CPU -> GPU -> Dedicate hardware

The dedicate hardware are low power and high hash rate. I have seen articles where people have rooms filled with tanks of 100s of liquid cooled rack mount cards.

Your home pc will not make a dent unless you get very very lucky but the brute power out there means your chances are near 0

Quote from majod :I guess you're talking about Win8. Maybe there's difference with Win 8.1. I never tried Win8 because I know the desktop experience is terrible, 8.1 is something different tho.

The core of both 8 and 8.1 is good but the UI is just a dog. Why force RT, that stupid start screen and charms on desktop. They should have left the desktop like 7 and allowed you to switch to RT when you wanted it. 8.1 still feels like the bastard combination of two things that don't belong with each other.

Some like it but for many people it is just a fail

I say this with a month of 8.1 use as forced by new laptop.

Roll on 9, lets hope they bring back a true desktop

As a long term windows user, the alternating versions thing is true.

2k - Great
XP - Great but to be fair had a dire start before patches
Vista - My last laptop was on this, is was a mess
7 - I grew to really like this. Loved the start menu it had and improved Vista no end but still had the backwards driver issues on much of XP hardware
8 - I skipped this
8.1 - My new laptop. If it is better than 8 then OMG. Metro (Or whatever it is called now) is a nightmare and the start menu, don't get me started on that.

8.1 core feels solid enough though so there might be hope for 9

On the DX front. DX10 and 11 do not bring that much to the game in reality. There are some lighting effects etc that are nice but the reality is, as Scawen pointed out, they were created to force people of XP

People should not focus on DX above 9, I will not suddenly make LFS appear better as you have to use the new code paths. A well done DX9 will still look great.

For me XP is dead now, I am sure that the hackers out there are saving up their zero day exploits for "death day" knowing they will not be patched but if people want to use it why not. The culture today appears to believe in obsolescence when in fact XP will run all the software it did before "death day" after that day and on forever.

Even Valve have lost faith in Windows direction and put huge effort into moving people away from it. While they are still in the throws of the change it will get better.

The end of the day, we just want to play games/sims etc.

One word of warning on DX9 though. MS would get a huge backlash if they dropped DX9 but do not put that past them in some future version of windows. It appears they are about to kill Games For Windows Live in a few months which means GTA IV also dies.

So DX9 is a solid move but I would also be testing that the DX9 implementation functions if switched to DX10 in case Win 9 kills DX9 and forces the issue. MS have a long history of dumping technology. Just look at Silverlight, WPF, RDO, ADO etc.

Also MS have moved to a far more rapid release cycle which means Win 9 will be soon and expect 9.1 and 10 to follow on year cycles. The life of DX9 might be shorter than people think.

Quote from CarlLefrancois :i may be wrong but i think he wants the size of the range where the clutch is only partly engaged to be bigger. this calibration trick is good to position the bite point where you want in the range, but makes the engage zone smaller, right?

oops, yep you are right

My work around is when you callibrate start half way and only do the lift and press so only about 1/3 of range is calibrated. This then becomes the area the clutch works over. Sort of simulates the range bit transitions. Adjust range to suit

The English language is a mess. With rules like i before e except after C which is not a rule at all because there are loads of exceptions.

Done even get me started on my pet hate word, the word queue... Strip the pointless letters and just use Q ffs lol

One interesting fact is that Old English is actually similar in structure and words as German and other Germanic based languages. Years back Eddy Izzard did a show on Old English and went around countries that have Germanic languages and could communicate speaking in Old English and they would understand.

Quote from Bob Smith :No, I'd not heard anything on this topic. I don't doubt you, it makes sense, I just feel I've possibly missed out on a good thread somewhere!

I think Becky is right. It rings a bell that this was an optimization for online play.

Also on the comments about negative feedback from some in the community. It is the Internet and there are retards everywhere, goes with the territory. You just have accept them and not let them get to you.

Look at all the flack after the initial release of NKP, bet that almost destroyed Kunos, but he has bounced back and looks like new sim on the way. NKP was not bad, great sim, but lacked what makes LFS so great - great MP management and easy to find and connect to servers and the online stats etc.

I never played iRacing as the costs were just stupid. No matter how good it might be going for priced content and monthly fee never sat well for me. Pick one but both just feels like a con.

LFS on steam has been mentioned loads of times, I have raised it myself as well years back. The workshop in steam works great and community voting means you know which are the crap mods and which are good.

The points about the free demo raised are easily solved in that only registered used can use mods.

Would be great to see new tracks and cars and due to the way the LFS physics work I assume they would clamp stupid stuff out as you are limited to wheel base, width, engine, gearbox and the rest is just the car shell. Bit the old tool LFSTweak (or whatever it was called) allowed you to do.

I remember someone managed to inject different models into LFS via DX years back but was never released to public (Can't remember who but sure Bob will know, unless his memory is as bad as mine lol)

It could be argued mods might limit S3 sales if there are loads of cars and tracks available but again limit mods such that you have to have the highest reg level. So currently S1 users could not use mods only S2. When S3 comes out lock out S1 and S2 users from mods. Simple

The reason I stopped playing, probably true for others, is content. The games I play the most are ones where you can play something new as things remain fresh after you have explored. Oh how I would love to see Bathurst in LFS, my favorite track of all time, but that would only happen through mods

I agree one fix would at least start S3 with the VW and new track but I get the feel that S3 might be bigger than people expect if it sees the light of day. Given that the currenct tracks/models are so old I could imagine they might be in for a rework also but could be wrong.

Quote from Fordman :Ping should not be an issue, I have Fibre Baby Yeah

Time zone's might be an issue, but over a weekend, might make it

I am probably looking at a good 3-400 ping. Always hard to drive tight when you see things that long after they actually happen

Quote from Fordman :Nice to see you still about Woz Grab that wheel and come and join some old S1 fun on my 0.3H7 Server sometime

I think it is now me that needs pointers HA HA HA, but thanks for the comment. Like you said, it was a strong community and little things like that was appreciated. Now all you get is "what do you know" and "who do you think you are" when you try and help....then get smashed off the road.....anyway, diversing here, back on topic.

As they say in football "Scawen Give us a wave, Scawen, Scawen Give us a Wave ....worth a try

Fordie

I would join your server but as I am have been on the other side of the world for so long the timezone and ping are an issue. The killer down here is there is not much action on the servers hence my waiting for S3 to spark interest again and fill up local servers

Another long term die hard here that was around during RSC days. It is saddening see how progress has dropped off from the S1 to S2 transition.

Early on in RSC you could post ideas and get dev feedback, there was constant visible progress and things were in a constant state of flux.

It was an exciting time. Constant updates and the community was strong and supportive of each other. I even remember Fordman taking time to watch me drive and give me pointers early on that helped me loads

Around the time of S2 I even got close to sinking a whole pile of cash into buying 4 * 301 sims and setting up a race center based on LFS. Communication with the devs was easy and had some good feedback about possibility of how LFS accounts and guest accounts could be operated in that setting etc.

Now I have not played in years but monitor this forum in a hope that some news might crop up that would spark my interest in LFS again. LFS is something that sucked as much of my time as Quake3, many many hours of driving.

No other race sim managed to grab me in the same way. I hope LFS is not dead but it feels like it. Even an update of yes we are working on LFS and it is not dead would be great news
Blah blah road safety. Where do I get this toy :)

Quote from Squelch :The reg dates are not always a good indicator of LFS accounts, merely the date they signed up to this forum.

Also all RSC was the original forum for ages until the move to stand alone forum, before RSC fell apart. RSC was good environment as you learnt about other sims also.

CTRA was fun but also real early on (back in the black car windows days and Clean Racing Club existed) there was a great feel on the servers as people would take the time to help you out and coach you etc.

I hope they open to modding with S3 and it is a big leap in forwards in sim we are all waiting for

Found a review of early version in a games mag. Played LFS for ten minutes then ordered a wheel

The servers my end of the world (NZ) have died off so not played in years now. Waiting to see what S3 brings now.

Moved into other gaming. Really enjoying The Walking Dead and Torchlight 2 at the mo. Also have a massive backlog of Steam games to play through thanks to all the bundles and Steam sales lol

Quote from brandons48 :So i've just ordered a new laptop,

http://uk.computers.toshiba-eu ... 113626/toshibaShop/false/

My one will be the 8GB RAM version.

The first number of the model with AI is the series, they increment with each new generation on cards so your in of the newer breed.

The number that really matters though with ATI GFX cards is the second one in. Yours is a 3 series which is considered entry level. The numbers numbers here are 3, 6 and 9 with 9 being the big cards in the series, 6 middle ground and 3 entry. There are the odd card slotted between in the mobile space

I have an HD2600 in my laptop and it copes well with games until you reach the big stuff like the more recent block buster stuff although I have to drop the resolution a lot sometimes.

My 2600 is not a patch on the 1900 from the previous generation.

Sounds like from later posts you have some stuff running. Hope the info above helps with future game selection

For me I open on webpage on my router. Drop the connection then connect again and I have new IP. It takes me seconds to do.

IP bans do nothing, as other have said, until everyone has a fixed IP. This might happen with IP6 but use of that is ages away if the sluggish move to IP6 is anything to go my.

Pointless the devs implementing a system. If you need it use in/out sim.
