2 Stroke Exhaust Question
Ok so I passed my CBT today, and as some of you may have known from before I have an RS125 which has an arrow exhaust system. I believe this is the 'full system'.

I've noticed it's very loud... and it says 'Arrow' in big yellow letters which attracts alot of attention from the plod...

My bike being the full power version, I don't wish to be stuck with the same power as a much more reliable YZF-125R (Which I would have bought failing the RS) by having to restrict it.

This basically means making the bike much more quiet than it is now. (Less noise = Less attention = Cops presume it has less power)

So I have a master plan which would keep the (presumably) arrow expansion chamber (because I can't be bothered taking the farings off and swapping the WHOLE exhaust because of the powervalve and shit) and simply bolt on the standard Aprilia end can..

Would this result in any serious mechanical harm? I know outright power may be comprimised a little bit but apart from that is there any other problems?

Cheers.

No. this won’t cause any mechanical harm.
I used to have a Nikon system on my old Sachs XTC125, the end can was foobared on it so I bolted on the original can. It still had the lovely tinnier sound from the Nikon expansion chamber, but it was a little quieter and the performance wasn't affected much at all.

When you bought the bike, did the previous owner give you the original exhaust? When it does come to getting your bike MOT'd, some garages won't pass it with a race exhaust on it.
Thanks Kaynd...

Beefy, I have the original system (End can and expansion chamber) As you said, the race can 'can' be a problem so that's why I figure of bolting the standard end can on the race system... if you know what I mean
If there is room, and it's properly supported, then it won't cause any problems.
You'll only get stopped if it is extremely loud, most Arrow's systems i've heard on RS's were never that loud until the powerband kicked in.

You might also want to check if the 3 bolts have the same positions on each can, if not you'll have to not be lazy and take the fairing off and swap the whole system. Which isn't hard at all.

I know Arrow made a bolt on can to go straight on the original 'prila expansion chamber, but i'm not sure if the full system as the same can. More than likely does, but you never know. It's worth checking out, and it's only a few bolts.

On some race cans it will have stamped on it somewhere 'not for road use', if you do get stopped and they see that, i'd imagine you'll get a slapped wrist if you're lucky, points if you're not so lucky. Not 100% sure on that though.

If you do keep it on, just don't ride like a twat and you should be fine.
Well, I haven't compared exact sizes, but a visual match did confirm that it was the same 3 mounting bolts on both cans. I believe the mounting plate is simular, if not the same on both the Arrow can and the standard Aprilia one.

Depending on the weather, I'll get around to it tommorow.

If I get stopped, however. It's a 2 stroke bike, and I'm riding on CBT, so most cops will be like "$_$ fines", and since obvously my bike is derestriced out of the factory, I may be in trouble.. and I wouldn't want it confiscated or anything.
The only time they'll know it's full power and more than 12bhp (or is it 15bhp on larry plates?), is if you're caught speeding doing around triple figure speeds.

Keep the revs low and only open it up when you're away from the eagle eyed.
When they run a vehicle check it will come back as "Aprilia RS125 FP 06"

(06 simply meaning the new shape of RS, FP meaning full power.)

My Dad tells me that they can (without a warrant or anything) test the power output of my bike.

I'm sure the police aren't retards and will probbably realise that there is also an "Aprilia RS125 11KW 06". (learner legal)

Talking of which, if they did catch me on a derestricted bike (For example if I was riding safely, but I was pulled anyway for a 'routine stop'), what would happen? Do they take your bike away or let you ride home but you have to get it restricted?
To be honest, I don't really know. Depends how bad a day that particular officer has had I guess.

Only one way to find out...
The police seem to be ok with loud exhausts as long as the can has'nt got "not for road use" stamped on it you'll be alright.

Im not 100% sure but my guess would be that you would be reported for driving/riding otherwise than in accordance with a licence LC20 (only 3 points and small fine i think). If they do suspect its not restricted just plead ignorance and say you were told it was restricted its not like they carry around a mobile dyno in the back of patrol cars. Chances are it would be more hassle/paper work than its worth for them
There is no such thing as too much hassle when it comes to picking on motorists. Dragging a teenager to a local bike dyno is much more fun than, say, catching criminals. And you can eat a doughnut whilst you watch the dyno run!

Me, cynical? I think not!
Look at it this way, its a free dyno run so atleast you'll know what its putting out
Haha Andy, I like your way of thinking.

I was thinking of saying that I was told that it was restricted upon purchase but meh.

Tristan, you do have that completely right.
on mopeds they dont dyno, just simply drive the bike on max and if it goes too high speed you will lose plates and have to make it stock again to re-recister it
Socialism ftl.

Big Brother knows best.
Woo, woke up this morning to my baby in glourious weather, went to bump start it (because the battery won't even turn the starter over because it's that flat) and it wouldn't start.

:sadbanana

So now it's sat in the on/off rain/sun on a battery charger..... :\

Better f***ing work.. it's been waiting a month already
Was the kill switch on? Made that mistake plenty of times.
Nope, neither was the kick stand down.

Run along at about 8Mph (I'm not exactly fit), jumped on, banged it down into first, dumped the clutch and it just turned over and ran till we came to a stop. It was turning over but it seemed like there was no ignition. (Maybe flooded engine?:shrug I tried again in second, to the same event. Beforehand, it'd do this, and then one time it would just fire up, but I ran back and forth many times, almost collapsing at one point () so I gave up. I even stuck the arrow end can back on (I'd changed it back to the standard one to shut it up) and still nothing.

Like, a couple of times I heard the distinctive two stroke ignition but alas, it didn't start.

So, I'm gunna leave it for another 3 hours on the charger, then try it on the starter. I have an interview at the local bike dealer and it'd give the right messages if I turned up on a bike, so if it starts, I will take it. If not, I'll be taking the train :\.

Edit : Maybe because the battery was so flat it wouldn't even swing the clocks round, it won't allow the CDI to work? Meh, idk.
I really am not a bike person, but instead of throwing abuse at James, I thought I might aswell help

Can't you charge the battery with jump leads? Or, find a hill..running isn't fun.

Love the mental image of you running with a bike, jumping on it and failing to bump start it. Sorry.
Shaddap Nelli.

No hills, I live in a valley. It's been charging now for the last like 3 hours, turned the ignition on and the clocks went round and lights came on!! So hopefully it'll be ok to start in 15 minutes so I can get to mah job interview... instead of going on the train and sitting next to a poor person.
I saw a bike like yours the other day, he rides past my work most days. He has the "Number one Spain" - or whatever, stickers all over it and I think Miiiiiiiiiiiiing as he rides past.
George Lorenzo's race rep colours... looks like it's trying to hard!

Better to be a ming on a bike than a mong in a car

Gunna see if it starts now, wish me no luck.

Nope.. turns over but nothing.
Bump start it again.

I think its safe to say your battery is fcuked.
