Proxy Settings - Apply To A Whole Network Connection?
I'm trying to to get this laptop set up at School, and i have to use proxy settings - the problem is that i have to set it up manually, i've been told to set it up in IE, however i've still got to get Firefox, Messenger etc to work - it would be easier to set this up for the entire connection, or have a little app to swtich between the proxy settings for School and home.

Any help please?
Wont firefox/msn etc follow IE's connection settings anyway? So thn all you have to set is if IE uses the proxy or not.

IE works, but Firefox still doesn't - i'm sure i can set this up somewhere in internet settings...
These command set the WinHTTPSettings registry key(s) which are generally where most windows programs should get their proxy info.

For XP:
proxycfg -p servername:port [optional-bypasslist]
proxycfg -d to set it to direct access
proxycfg -u to drag the settings from IE

For Vista you have to do it via netsh:
netsh winhttp proxy set proxy-server="http=sernameort"
netsh winhttp proxy reset for direct access
netsh winhttp proxy import to import from IE

So you mean i could just set it up in a batch file?

(that is if they are CMD commands)

If so, i owe you an ePint - thanks!
Yup, batch file should work.

If your school uses MS ISA server, it might be worth asking about the ISA firewall client (if the laptop is on the school domain), as it should sort this crap out by itself.

Opera has the option to use 5 different proxy's...

HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SOCKS, and probably Gopher? Nothing unusual there.

By default if you don't specify a specific type of proxy they'll all get set the same server and relevant default port for that proxy type.

Firefox: Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings
Enter your proxy data there and click Ok a few times

I was looking for a way without having to do it manually, as switching between home and school every day would be a PITA for each app. I tried it on Firefox manually, but it still wouldn't work - i'll try Opera tommorow, then i'll probably end up giving in and using IE.

Sorry to bump this ooooold thread - but could you give me an example of a batch file I could plonk these in for?

the proxy i'm using is 10.191.2.49 with port 8084.

I'd like one for the proxy and one for a direct connection.

Thanks!
