VERL 2020 - Round 1
V8 Racing League 2020
Round 1

Sunday,20th September
17:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET

6th season of VERL is ready to start and it will be started where the season ended for past 3 years - at Westhill. The tricky and winding National configuration is well known for years already but it's still a great challenge with 450 horsepower open wheeler - a circuit where fast turns are combined with slower sections and to make things more fun, there is plenty of elevation.
Season opener as always is a great way to start your own mission to champion title, series top5 in standings or just improving your best result - first base result towards your goals. Currently none of the 5 previous series champions have signed up yet, which opens doors for a potential new one,but signups are still open until start of a round.

Round info:
Track: Westhill National (WE1)
Laps: 46
Previous winners: Teho | Altsu (2019), Kamikas (2018), TEM/Y.Laprevotte (2017), [SR] sermilan (2016), S M.Kapal (2015)

The 2020 season started practically where 2015 season left off - with the champion of the inaugural VERL season dominating the race. A total of 17 drivers qualified and started the race, but before reaching 1/3 of the race distance, just 10 were left running, one of those retired just after half distance, meaning 5 championship points paying 10th place was left unfilled.

The 2015 VERL champion S.Litmanen is the only VERL champion, who has signed up for this season until now and with dominating round 1 he paved the beginning of a way to become 1st ever Race Green Events annual leagues drivers champion. S.Litmanen picked up 20 points for race win and both bonus points for fastest laps in both sessions. His teammate Gábor finished 2nd more than a half of a lap behind, while 3rd and 4th place drivers Ayoub Maroc and Fatass respectibly finished just 5 seconds of being lapped by racewinner.

Standings after 1st round of course are in same order as round 1 finishing results, what only matters are the points gaps - S.Litmanen currently leads by 5 points over Gábor,Ayoub Maroc in 3rd place is 8 points from lead. Interestingly next 2 positions in table are also current leaders in Rookie of the Year chart - Fatass leads Mandula by 2 points here.

In Teams championship race winner's team dominated in same way as the finn himself - Team S1DUS picked up all possible 39 points and leads over closest followers named "a" by 20 points,3rd is RGA another point behind. Situation in Nations cup is mixed up slightly diffently - winner's nation Finland leads, but by "just" 7 points over Hungary,Marocco is 3rd 20 points off lead.

Break between first 2 rounds is just 1 week - round 2 at Rockingham is already this sunday! The Rockingham V8 200 will feature a race on standard configuration named Sportscar, but in VERL's version it will bypass the 1st chicane. The lap lenght is just short of 2.7 kilometers and features a high speed run over oval's turns 4 and 1,a narrowing hairpin,2 different left corners and 2 multiple small turn radius combinations. Since the configuration is rarely used,it might give some headackes in terms of setting up the car - drivers must find the right balance between topspeed and handling in turns.
