Update

CPU is now at 4.8 GHz (1.285v)

HDD's are now a 256GB Samsung 830 & 2x 2TB 7200.14 (with 8TB now available via NAS).

Hyper 212 EVO Cooler has been replaced by a Corsair H100, which (along with the CPU) has been lapped. Added 4x 120mm fans in a push/pull arrangement.

Also had to add some car audio deadening to the case as the sides are so thing the Z5500's bass is making them rattle!

Now I've got some decent cooling on the CPU I should be able to go a bit higher on the CPU, too...

EDIT - and on the subject of PC's, yet another laptop - this time a 13" MacBook Pro Retina to replace my 2011 13" i7 MacBook Pro.

Really just wondering .. what do you need ~10TB of drivespace for? Copied a whole wall of Blurays? Still only have one external 1.5TB drive and that is 2/3 full with all my music and movies

Have about 4TB of movies (films + TV shows), and some music & photos (maybe 100GB?)

I originally had 4TB of space which was full so I bought 2x 4TB drives and upgraded. At the moment, only half full - but I'll always need more space.

Old...

Replaced the titchy 6750 (which it turns out to be a rebranded 5750) for a pair of 5870's in Crossfire.

Replaced the 670w Hiper PSU for a 1050w Enermax PSU to make sure I had enough power

Added couple of extra fans to deal with the ridiculous amount of heat the new cards make

Relocated the drives into the 5.25" bays and mounted them using some Sharkoon VibeFixer mounts to quieten them down (and lined the front of the 5.25" bays with sound deadening material).

External cooler so it a.)Doesnt heat inside and thus other components up & b.)can disperse heat faster from the rad

Looks a bit redneck atm but im ordering a h100 which ill mount better and more permenant on the back.
Wouldn't mounting it to the rear fan position had the same result?

Should really mount the H100 to the top, if your case allows that.

my thinking, be it right or wrong was to get the hottest stuff outside the case and let the case sort out the other components. having the rad externally means none of the heat generated goes anywhere near the other components so it really keeps it very cool inside there. plus, i can open the window as well which is just like having the PC outside.

i tested prime95 and got good results (ran for a couple hours)

I've done my own/customer builds like this, no problems with temps even on 3970X/7970's and can keep everything mounted inside:

But it doesn't really matter, if you don't care about having the rad outside the case.

The HAF XB is such a cool case.
I will use it for my new PC too (i will post pics when done).

Ah yes, Allot of space,Good cooling,But i find it it a bit to large.
And i hate the cheap plastic look. But i still got it cause it will fit a 240mm radiator with push pull no problems. And easy maintanance and part swapping, Its like a testbench.
