Grand finale in Kyoto

The last 6 hour round of the GT2 World Series was driven in sunny Kyoto, Japan. As usual, we had two cars to compete in the race for SAVAGE SimSports. We flew down Jonas Bakšys and Karl Raudsepp as our strong line-up in the XR2 Pro car and Laurynas Matonis, Erik Blixt and Mika Paananen as our strong line-up in the FZ2 Am car.

The team had decided that Jonas would do the first stint in the XR2 starting from 19th position and Laurynas would do the first stint in the FZ2 car starting from 24th position in this strong field. As the green flag was out, they both knew they had to drive a bit on the defensive side, to not make any stupid moves and ruin their long 6 hour race in the first corner. They both stayed cool and could easily make it through turn 1 safely and by the time they reached split one, Jonas had advanced 2 places to 17th and Laurynas had gained 3 places to 21st. By the time they were doing their first drivers changes, Jonas had advanced to the 16th place and Laurynas went up to 19th.

As Karl went out of the pit lane to do his first stint, he had dropped down to the 22nd position and Erik in 23rd. They both drove two perfectly safe stints to get a feeling of the track and their cars and did not push too hard. By the time Erik did his first driver change, he had advanced to the 18th position before leaving it to Laurynas again.

However, Laurynas had dropped rapidly before he could leave the pits and was in the 21st position before getting the race pace back up. In the meanwhile, Karl Raudsepp had advanced to a strong 15th position before doing a pit stop at lap 46, leaving the car back to Jonas Bakšys who left the pits in a strong 15th position.

As Erik went in for his second drivers change, it was time for our pro driver Mika Paananen to test out the SAVAGE FZ2 Am car and thanks to Erik’s fast stable driving, Mika only lost 1 position during the pit stop. Since Mika had only driven the XR2 Pro car this season, he had to do a safe start, get to know the car and the track and due to a misunderstanding, Mika did not push as hard as he would have wanted because he thought he had to save the car to do a double stint, however Mika did a safe and stable stint and managed to advance two positions before leaving the car back to Erik's final stint.

But the real action began at lap 127, when Ixion SimSports crashed with their FZ2 Pro car violently in T1 and the safety car had to be deployed. By that time, SAVAGE Pro car had advanced to a strong 10th position at the time driven by Karl Raudsepp with his team car driven by Erik Blixt in the 14th position.

Erik, who drove his second GT2 World Series race had never made a safety car restart in this series before, had a good fight between 15th and 17th and eventually crossed the line in the 17th position. Karl who started 12th at the restart had to give in for Reno Kööts and finished in the 13th position, which is a good finish from the 19th position at the start.
