You can never get rid of crime. Even if theres the most minute regulations on something, people will try to get it the easy way, illegally. I don't know where people think that the law doesn't allow them to protect themselves, their family, or their property, because it does.

Under British criminal law, a person is allowed to use "reasonable force" to either arrest or stop a person commiting a criminal act, in self defense, or defence of property.

Obvioulsy the key point is "reasonable force" and is up for question, but you are protected under British law, and should never think you aren't.

IMO, if a would be thief or burglar were to enter my home,from the second they make the conscious decision to trespass onto my property uninvited and enter the building, or any other part of the premises, they are fair game.

It's not sharpened or anything, as it has been decomissioned or made safe, however you say it, but if i were a burglar and met a home owner that was holding something which looked like that in their hand, then i would probably make my way out pretty darned quick!

Not that i could hold it tho, because due to my moving house twice in as many years, i cant find it, i know its here at my parents somewhere, but i just cant pinpoint where!

And legally you can do that. You can do whatever is necessary to protect yourself.

What you can't do - and this is why the law is worded how it's worded - is whatever you feel like doing with someone who's entered your home. You can't shoot them dead while they're running away, you can't slit their throats after beating them unconscious, you can't handcuff them to a radiator and stick electrodes to their nuts every day for a month or however long it takes for them to starve to death.

If you don't like that law, there are much more barbaric places in the world you could live.

weapons are as dangerous to yourself as it is to others if you are not trained, why not get some self defense training instead? knowing how to act on the attacker's weakness and deal with it swiftly is always better than having a full on armed fight.

self defense isn't complicated martial art skills, just knowledge and situation awareness training that everyone can pick up.

Don't know about other places, but in aus if you're trained in martial arts you can be charged for assault with a deadly weapon, so you're not much better off using a pole.

but self defense isn't martial arts in any sense, just measured strikes to joints, throat and some fragile bones, and ideally you only need one move to immobilize the other guy, or at least earn you some time to get help. everybody will come off a lot better than in a full on fight.

Do an internet search on "home invasion" "killed". You will find all kinds of situations. Criminals who have their own weapon taken from them and used on them. Home owners who had the reverse done to them. Some armed home owners succeeded in protecting themselves and some failed. Having property stolen isn't the only thing that can happen in a break in. There is also rape and torture just for the fun of it. Here in the USA some thieves have burned the homes they have robbed because they know it will get rid of the DNA evidence. They also kill the inhabitants because they know dead witnesses don't testify in court. Sometimes they kill before they burn, sometimes they just tie up the people and let the fire do it.

Claiming that the rest of us should set a good example by getting rid of our weapons and preaching non-violence is a bit naive. The criminals do not think like the rest of us nor share our values or they wouldn't be criminals in the first place. Is a TV worth a human life? Of course not. But that is the criminal's choice, not the home owner's choice. If he places so little value on his own life as to invade another person's home then that is too bad. The world will be a better place without him and he will at least serve as an example to some other person who is thinking of going down the wrong path. (However, our anti-gun media never reports when guns prevent crimes, just when the use of guns fail.)

But whether a person chooses defense or hope is their right. Both choices come with risk but each person should have a right to make that choice for themselves. Circumstances will have a lot to do with which choice is the most wise.

By-the-way, shotguns make good home defense weapons. The shot doesn't go through walls and risk hurting other occupants, the noise has a tremendous frightening effect, even if you miss, and the cocking of a shotgun is the universal language saying "get out of here" and doesn't need to be translated.

Surely having being able to have a gun to protect your house in the US would lead to lower crime figures?, which is obviously doesn't as the US has some on the highest murder and crime rates in the world, pretty much like corporal punishment not actually being a deterent against crime.
