& as i only have a core 2 duo.. do i need an upgrade for the cpu aswell ? ?

If you are playing only LFS, then I'd rather go for CPU over GPU. (LFS uses CPU much more then GPU, and it doesn't support multi core CPU's. So the more power one core has, the faster LFS will be. )
If you play other games, and if they lag, you should buy both CPU and GPU.

The 9600 is getting old now. I'd go for a similarly priced current generation card, like ATI's Radeon HD5670 or nVidia's GT 240.

Your CPU should be fine, I get 60FPS at max settings on a Core 2 Duo with 1.86GHz and a GeForce 7800GTX, and about 200FPS on my newer machine.

basically, any video card over 256mb is good yes ?
