chameleon skins?

That flip-flop paint effect on street cars where the angle of light hitting the paint surface changes the colour, normally from petrol blue-green to purples. That is what people call Chameleon paint.
Unless, of course, you mean a car that looks like the colour-changing lizard?

no, pearlescent paint is different to chameleon paint - pearlescent remains the same colour whatever viewing angle, whereas chameleon has tiny plates of aligned mica in the structure that give 2 or 3 distinct colour changes depending on the incident light.

Whats pearlescent paint then. I always thought it was the paint that appeared different colours with different light and viewing angle.
I would like to know the difference

Maybe, as well as i may be wrong, Al also may be wrong... But who's right?!? To be honsest, i haven't got a club i just see colour-changing paint in a game and it's under the Pearlescent tab so i don't know what to think :S

Pearlescent has different coloured paint flecks, sometimes metallic with a clear lacquer over the top, flakes are not necessarily aligned. It may shimmer in moving light but the basic colour remains unchanged. The aligned plates of metallic paint particles in a chameleon paint give a very distinct colour shift, it's unmistakeable.

pearlescent, well as Al said doesn't change its color complety, it reacts to the sun like a pearl (duuuuhh!) does. it is iridescent with the sun. in French we call it "nacre". i looked up the word and the translator gave me "lustre". hope it helped you a bit.

Just done a quick image search on google, and here's what it came up with....


The thing is, the colour changing effect (whatever it's called) looks great under huge arc lights in a multi million pound motor show, or driving along the E15 in southern Spain, where it's always sunny. But, trolling along the M62 in dull, soggy, typically British weather, it just looks awful, as if the guy doing the paint job had a vindaloo the night before, and, after his morning ablutions looked into the toilet bowl and thought to himself, Hmmmmm that gives me an idea

...all it is, is just... nevermind you guys wouldnt understand

Pearl paint is a standard base coat with a different coloured clear coat over the top of that. For example; a white car (base coat) with a blue pearl clear coat (clear coat) is an example of a pearl paint job.

Chameleon Paint is a mixture of several different colours and shades. Some paint jobs i've heard with up to 7 different colours!

Harlequin Paint is another form of Chameleon paint but i think the difference between Chameleon and Harlequin is the colour change ability and limited choice of colours.

All of these paint systems work on the way light reflects off the surface to give off a different colour.

House of Kolor is one of Australias biggest automotive paint manufactures. Have a read of their websites about different types of paints.

I got it now Always good to learn something new.

Different metals reflect at different wavelengths depending on the incident light. If, for example, you made a paint with small plates or flakes of silver, gold and aluminium pigment, then if each different metal were coloured differently, you could get the colour to change depending on the amount reflected, wich in turn depends on either the alignment of the flakes or the angle of reflection. This is how they get the chameleon paints to work.

Ive got to say i never knew that. Probably wont remember it but its always nice to know how something is done.

There will be a test at the end of the week and if anyone gets less than half marks I will be personally leading a name-and-shame campaign throughout the community.
