For those looking for a stream, this little gem streams 44 british channels among which BBC Sports (for FP's), eurosport, normal BBC and much more.
U need to have VLC installed in it's default location, but for the rest it's just click and watch.
BBC sports sync is off though(other channs are fine), so u will need a recent VLC version and go into extra/synchronisation and put the synch to -3.8s.

And so they should. F1 is a valuable commodity to them, as witnessed by the large TV contracts that exist.

Not really - You would be denying the neighbour use of his car, watching a pirate feed doesn't deny any legitimate watchers of anything.

It is a slightly dodgy area though, many football forums have been threatened with legal action for linking to streams of matches. I would have thought that linking to pirate streams of races would be banned on here, much like linking to pirate software.

However it really is a grey area - Myself for example already pay for the F1 broadcast, as the rights have been purchased by Switzerland public television.
How can I be a pirate watching it over the net then?

Same goes for French TV, rights purchased by a private TV broadcasting for free...

Watching a pirate stream is to infringe the owner's copyright. It's not stealing since the original product is still accessible to the legitimate user. If you're watching a pirate stream, the only time you aren't conducting copyright infringement is if you have the right to watch that exact broadcast anyway.

A Swiss person who has paid their TV fee can freely watch a pirate stream of a Swiss TV broadcast. They cannot legitimately watch a pirate BBC stream, because they have not paid the BBC TV fee.

However, your analogy with a neighbour's car is... unfitting. It's more like watching a DVD being played on your neighbour's television through your window, without your neighbour's permission.

The Australian scenario is more interesting.

F1 coverage in Australia is provided by Channel Ten, a commercial free-to-air television broadcaster. They have a digital channel, One, which provides live coverage of the F1 races. The source of their coverage? The BBC!

So... is it legal for an Australian person to watch a pirate stream of the BBC coverage? Is it legal to watch a pirate stream of One's coverage, remembering that it is basically a live relay of the BBC feed?






(The answers to both questions are: illegal and illegal.)

i've pondered this a few times too, as i've seen other people link to f1 steams... but all the times i've reported it, nothing ever happened.

Warning: boring legalese below.

I'm curious about the specifics. I found that (paraphrased): It's illegal because the viewer ought reasonably to know that an unauthorised decoder is being used to give someone else access to encoded content (The BBC stream, before it reaches the TV station).

It's a bit confusing, as I'm not sure what "reasonably" constitutes to. A person with little technical knowledge could well not be aware that an "unauthorised decoder" is required to provide the pirate stream of a free-to-air broadcast.

It's 29.95 for two years but they don't actually provide the streams they just link you to them. Sounds like you would be paying to watch a stream you can get for free. But does anyone know if they are better quality?

all i wanted to point out, was that regardless of the medium, obtaining things people didn't pay for is against the law...

i haven't downloaded anything illegally in over 7 years... i stopped downloading music/movies/tv/software, i stopped using pirated copies of windows, etc. i'm totally legit now.

now, on the flipside, i use the mythtv pvr software... some would consider that stealing because i'm watching recorded television, but that's no different than buying a pvr from my cable company, except i'm not forced to use their drm (broadcast flags, watch limits, storage time limits, etc).

anyways... going back to fuji...

i love this event, and although i wish they didn't change the last third of the track over the years, it should still provide a fun race.

it's a shame that next year will be suzuka, but i guess everyone has their reasons. however, it will be nice that 2010 will have montreal on the track list.

brawn, redbull and force india all have good chances of winning the race, however i hope mclaren steps up to the plate and gets the job done... it may be too late to win the championship, but throwing a wrench into the top teams points is always a bonus.

And Suzuka is a much better track.

I download the race coverage by BBC but I don't think its stealing, since even if I wanted to pay for it, I couldn't.
