The standard Squiers are good guitars these days, I spent most of last year gigging a Squier Jazz Bass and it did a great job, although I did put a better bridge on it, better pickups, bigger tone capacitor and added a series/parallel switch, but it was a sound bass before I did all that I just needed more bottom end for my reggae band.

Quote from flymike91 :Every child in the US goes through a police-sponsored drug education program. Every US citizen knows that hard drugs are bad for you and illegal to use because of this education program.

Is there any actual truth taught during that education program? Most smart kids can smell bullshit from a mile away and that's why they're interested in trying drugs - because they can tell the government's line is a crock of shit and they're curious as to why they're being told not to do them.

We recently had a group of scientists who advise the UK government on drug legislation decide that most of the illegal drugs in the UK should be downgraded and some were no more harmful than alcohol. The government ignored this professional advice that they had solicited themselves because it didn't fit with policy.

Quote from Kristi :Well, you still can't live with the fact that they are the same kinda people as us, and you line them out so therefore you are racist.

Assuming 'they' means racial minorities and not mothers: They are clearly different in terms of having been discriminated against in western culture for centuries.

Quote from Kristi :My perspective is, why would they be any different than us. I'm not offended if I'm called a Hungarian or whatsoever. Just get over the past, that's all. We are living in another world now.

Would you be offended if I said you're an idiot? What if I said Hungarians are a sub-race of humans and that's why you're not as smart as me? What if other people agreed or thought what I said was OK and you shouldn't make a fuss about it?

It's difficult for you to know how you'd feel because you know I'm joking, but imagine if this was an acceptable attitude towards Hungarians for the last few hundred years and it had caused you problems getting a decent education, getting a job, had caused you or your family to be attacked, harrassed by police, etc. How would you feel about it then?

Quote from Kristi :I completely agree with morpha. It would be the same situation as getting banned for calling someone's mother.

Use a little perspective. Mothers aren't a group that have been historically discriminated against.

Quote from flymike91 :why would addicts be any more able to afford their drug if it were legal? It's not like pharmaceutical companies to lower the prices of medicines that people need to live. Do you think tax money should be used to buy heroin for junkies if they can't afford it?

If it saves money in other departments, why not?

Quote from flymike91 :It puts the government in a situation it should never be in, both providing hard drugs and discouraging their use. Whether you think it's moral or not it will never happen.

Here in the UK we already provide synthetic alternatives (diamorphine mostly I think?) to try to wean addicts off the high. We used to use heroin and I think still do in some cases. I can imagine the US government would be more strongly opposed to this kind of therapy because the US government started the whole 'War on Drugs' nonsense, but it's an eminently sensible thing to do and indeed lots of countries are already doing it.

Quote from flymike91 :Also what social problems cause drug abuse? Drug abuse is a choice. I knew a girl here in Texas, beautiful, rich family, hopelessly addicted to heroin. She never had any problems except her parents enabled her with a $600 per month allowance.

So based on your sample of one, you've deduced that most heroin addicts are from privileged backgrounds?

Quote from Rynno666 :When black people stand up for their race everyone applauds them and accept it. When white people stand up for their race suddenly they are racists and evil. Hypocrisy!

There's a difference between campaigning for equality and campaigning against minorities.

I'm not advocating recreational use of opiates at all but the fact is there are lots of people already using them, and lots of those people are already addicted.

People don't stop experimenting with drugs just because they're illegal, and those who do become addicted are forced to get their drugs through illegal channels, putting them in dangerous situations and creating more crime. The only reason these people have to become involved with dealers and pimps and other such scum is because of the 'War on Drugs'. Legalise the lot and you take the power away from those people.

We should be concerned with solving the social problems that push people into these dependencies, not criminalising them and penalising them. We can't do that properly while the drugs are illegal and the users are at the mercy of criminal gangs.

Quote from flymike91 :If just marijuana were legalized it would go a long way towards solving the problem. People want to get high, there should be at least one safe, legal way to do it. I don't think all or nothing is a logical way to think about it.

Alcohol is already legal. People still smoke weed or take hallucinogens / opiates / amphetamines, etc. There's no logic to your suggestion. Or any of your posts. Ever.

Quote from flymike91 :I think reasonable people can draw a line between heroin and milkshakes. Can you?

I've taken heroin three times. My girlfriend has never taken heroin.

In the last 20 years I've been to see a doctor on three occasions (an eye infection, swollen wrist tendons, tonsilitis), and have needed no hospital treatment. In the last ten years my girlfriend has had two different types of cancer, broken two bones, and consultations leading to an operation to remove an overactive parathyroid gland.

I also have been donating blood regularly for the last 7 or 8 years and haven't missed a donation.

What's your point anyway?

Quote from flymike91 :If the government shouldn't be involved in regulating and enforcing drug laws, then they also should not give money and services to addicts. Hospitals should not treat addicts for any symptoms related to drugs unless the user pays or has health insurance. It is unfair for responsible people to have to pay for the mistakes of others. Part of living in a free and independent society is taking personal responsibility.

You want to be free to take drugs and destroy your body? I want to be free to let you die.

I guess fat people shouldn't get health care either. Or people who drink booze. Or people who don't do however much exercise each day the state recommends. Or people who don't achieve their recommended daily intake of all the vitamins and minerals. Etc.

I like Linux I just think it's a terrible choice of desktop OS, because as you say there's no quality software available for it. Android seems to work pretty well on my phone, and various distros have been excellent on our web servers over the last 12 years or so, it's just not any use on a general-purpose personal computer.

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo : This is what I was going to reply with, but I like Kev so I didn't want to argue. I have no idea why anyone would use a tablet for recording (other than the hipsters doing it in Apple adverts). As far as I know Amplitube is also an Android app as well anyway...

Amplitube isn't available for Android.

The iPad is apparently pretty useful as a sketchpad for music. I personally don't have one and don't think I'd use one like that, but two guys I'm putting a band together with at the moment commonly demo stuff using Garageband on the iPad, it seems to work pretty well for them.

I was thinking of getting one to use as a controller in my home studio, so I'd still be recording to a computer (probably my Windows PC) but using the iPad for common controls on my DAW, mixing, maybe even some MIDI input I don't know. I think it would be a very flexible tool to have, compared to a dedicated hardware controller/mixer. And smaller/lighter too. But I wouldn't be using it for actual audio processing.

Quote from stan.distortion :That's what many press articles are saying, strangely they all started saying it about the same time, often from jurno's that contribute very few articles. Maybe that really is the opinion of the majority of dev's but I'd be sceptical, too many dirty tricks in the name of promotion on the net these days.

It's true though that there isn't the same quality level in the Android market (or Google Play or whatever they want to call it) despite the free-for-all submission model they use. You'd think with the hoops you have to jump through to get an iOS app approved developers would be preferring Android. But when you're writing programs that push the hardware really hard, I can imagine it's almost unthinkable to do that with a platform like Android, with new devices coming every month with different specifications, before you even consider the fragmentation problems of the OS itself.

Quote from Shotglass :lets postpone this discussion until x86 win8 tables are out shall we?

Well I was originally asking for a competing tablet that actually exists, but yes I will concede that in the future a product may appear that provides better functionality than the iPad. The fact that it doesn't exist at the moment sort-of makes my point though doesn't it.

I just don't understand why people who don't buy Apple products are so quick to crap all over them despite apparently knowing nothing about them. They make good, functional devices and certainly in the tablet market there's currently no competition. I don't think Android will ever be able to compete either, because developers hate it.

What tablet is available that offers a better range of software than the iPad?

Quote from vourliotis :I was musician too, many years before (bass guitar) but my tendons betrayed me.

I've had really bad swollen tendons from playing bass guitar, took over a year to recover and they still sometimes flare up, I have to be really careful with it now. I know lots of other bass guitarists with tendon problems.

Strangely, I can play as much double bass as I want and I don't get any problems. I thought double bass would be worse but because my wrists stay straight it doesn't give me any discomfort at all.
